Hey Ned, The Old Dirt Slinger here in Missouri to say you are my favorite dig channel, next to mine of course! I've been slingin' dirt 60 years now, the first 30+- in Cali south of you in SLO town. In 1990 I found a clear example Owl like your green one under an old house with a partial label stating it was Olive Oil. The indented side panels were presumably for a better grip with wet oily hands. The ones with the flat "normal" side panels are considered the whiskies, though like the Primrose type oil bottles, both sport a liquor finish. I have seen both the whiskies and oils in both amber and green as well as clear/amethyst. but the green is by far the rarest. Sadly I washed off the cruddy label remnants as it really made the bott look cruddy. I never expected there was any controversy until I explained to a fellow at the Morro Bay show his $400 amber "whiskey" was in fact an olive oil. He stiffened up and responded, "Well, MINE'S a Whiskey!" Some folks just don't care to be educated. Killer find regardless, and glad Lou is still around to help you out. He recently did a world class cleaning job of my greenish Ravenna flask worthy of any museum now after his restoration. Plus I have worn out several probes of his making in the last 20 years, which is hard to do. All that said, I want to make a onetime donation but your Patron site doesn't offer that. Mainly cuz there is no guarantee I'll be around long enough to equal what I'd like to donate. You can pm me with an invoice through Paypal at cannibalfromhannibal@gmail.com for one option. I suspect you would get more donations if people could simply drop you a helping hand on occasion. I know I don't care for those monthly dings to my bank account, but then at 72 years old it's amazing to me I even have an email account! Ha! Anyhoo and regardless, keep slinging dirt as you guys are killing it like it's 1964 back there!
Hey Ned- how about letting us know how rare a Bott is when it’s just been dug and is on camera? Because so many of us won’t know the rarity? You could use ‘common’ - ‘scarce’ - ‘rare’ and ‘extremely rare!’ It would really help! Thanks Ned your channel rocks, it’s the best digging channel in the west! You deserve every success as your channel grows! All the best from Scotland, Brian 👍🇬🇧
Beautiful Bottle. I dug up a broken 1905-1910 Seipps Beer from Chicago 2 weeks ago and found all 3 pieces. Decided to glue it back together. Did a video on it too. Not as professional as yours but I just couldn't leave it. 👍
I thought Paige was a knockout and then I saw her in the car shot, hair done, makeup on and holy smokes she's absolutely model pretty. Oh yeah, sorry about that bottle too. 😂
I missed one by being 12 hours late to a site and Chip and Marcos had already found it. Waited another year before I found my own and damn it felt good! Keep digging 1895 to 1905 stuff and you’ll have one at some point.
OK. I liked your little vignette. Little funny dramas are a good idea. I think you should go sci fi. If you think about it, Ned is the classic space ship captain sort, and Paige is just about the best wookie you could ever get. Vasquez rocks is right there. Space ship sets are ez, all you gotta do is fill up a warehouse with junk and make a bridge of some kind. Somehow I get the feeling Paige already can make wookie noises. Betcha
I have a cobalt Ghirardelli soda bottle from Oakland, CA, probably from the 1860's. Unfortunately there are to good sized chips out of the mouth. I'd like the ling to your bottle repair guy to see if it could be restored. Thank you!
Lou actually repaired a chipped ghirardellis for me too one time ! If you email him at that address I listed he will respond fast. Lou@oldwestbottles.com
The “Pico” is actually just a sanded-down gardening or dandelion fork avail at Home Cheapo ! When you buy em they have two sharp prongs that you have to file down w an angle grinder before hitting the layer w it, or else you may put Bott safety in jeopardy!!
Hey Ned, why not lease a building for a week down in the Bay Area and just take up the whole floor? It’s all dump under there right? Or even take up part of the floor and put up wood shoring and mine the bottles out? Worth thinking about? Or lease any vacant area?
Would be nice to know what he is soaking bottles in? Muriatic acid maybe? Yeah he cleaned the owl bottle inside and out, but how? With what? I'm assuming a tumble with some cut copper and polish at some point? Help me out here...
I’ve never personally tumbled a bottle and I know Lou has a proprietary process containing certain details that he won’t share with anyone including me bc he has a business cleaning them for people all around the country. But basically he soaks them in something like muriatic to remove the actual crud that isn’t embedded in the glass. Then he does a hand polish, then he tumbles them with the copper pellets. Anybody can do it but it takes years and tons of experimentation to do it well. If you under-clean you’re left w these annoying hazy patches, but if you over-clean, the surface of the bott will be slippery, resembling plastic & the bott will be ruined. That’s why for 20 years I’ve just been sending my bott to Lou for cleanings and repair. But there are ppl who choose to do it themselves also ! This vid gives as much detail that I could obtain of the process that an expert undergoes for cleaning & repair.
Lou did it for free in exchange for giving him a plug at the end ! I know that repair prices vary based on size of the damage, the bottle, color, etc etc
The one I dug had a flash in the lip. Something about the tops of these green owls. My dad dug one that had lip damage too. I'm glad that you found God and salvation!
I’ve never tried to make one but I know other people who have and clean their bottles on their own. I think it’s pretty easy to figure out how to basically clean your own bottles but the harder part is cleaning them so that they come out right a.k.a. not too slippery or not too hazy
Ned you are going to need God look at the amount of subscribers you have 6.66 I don't know if Lou can save you but you're right about one thing he is a god at fixing bottles I have some bottles that my challenge his God like abilities to fix bottles yeahhe might look at my bottles and run but at least we know where all your bad luck was coming from that horrible subscriber number 666 that explains everything the bottles all broken the car broken the girl leaving you it's a good thing you walked the path to righteousness I thought we were all going to have to start praying for you Ned the bottle gods were actually on your side this day it was Satan Who was against you Satan was taught a lesson this day don't f*** with the bottle diggers who walks the path of righteousness😂

I had to rewatch this amazing joke ten times!! 🤣😂
I loved the 80s overreverb'd guitar solo video montage.
OMFG 😂 I love your voice saying "honk!" "honk!" Over the cursing!! So much more funnier!!
Another great film the Oscars are going to criminally overlook next year.

I missed one by being 12 hours late to a site and Chip and Marcos had already found it. Waited another year before I found my own and damn it felt good! Keep digging 1895 to 1905 stuff and you’ll have one at some point.

That really caught me off guard. You guys are crazy. Subbed 👍
Yeah rock on Darren from Australia I dig your videos
Love the videos.. definitely different from any other bott channel! One question though, where the hell do you buy the “pico?” tool
The “Pico” is actually just a sanded-down gardening or dandelion fork avail at Home Cheapo ! When you buy em they have two sharp prongs that you have to file down w an angle grinder before hitting the layer w it, or else you may put Bott safety in jeopardy!!

Nice episode! What was that end music-? Kinda metal riffing
Copyright free rock tune - was a good one ! I didn’t play the guitar for that, only in the walking montage scene…

“All tucked away down there” - Homer Simpson
How much did it cost to fix the bott?
Lou did it for free in exchange for giving him a plug at the end ! I know that repair prices vary based on size of the damage, the bottle, color, etc etc
Good thing about God (Lou) is that he’ll give you a quote first
I would like to request you find more fruit jars...maybe some Pacific Glass Works Victorys or Dodge Sweeny Co...bottles are boring 😆 🤣 😂 jkjk
Screw the victory jar I want the pontiled Brayton jar !!!
The one I dug had a flash in the lip. Something about the tops of these green owls. My dad dug one that had lip damage too. I'm glad that you found God and salvation!
The lip gets really thin towards the top edge - I bet that’s the main reason! And that rare bottles just love to get damaged lol
