Very Good Job Gentlemen. Ive been a gamer for over 40 years and your traditional approach to the rules was instantly recognizable.. Outstanding terrain and good miniatures. Home brewed games are head and shoulders above the Game Workshop mass marketed products.
I myself am running a house rules miniatures game in 1:30 scale (aka Toy Soldier scale) Vietnam War.
Harumph!!!! Sure these rules are really, really fun, easy to get into yet and will likely grow the hobby - but what about the impact on us grognards who revel in our self-appointed roles as gate keepers with arbitrary and capricious standards. Dudes, you are most definitely harshing my crankiness buzz. I might even be forced to smile while playing.

I like these rules. I've played miniature games since the first Rouge warrior edition of Space Marines (40k universe). I think this system would also lend well to an RPG system with some additional skill rules added. Simple, fast paced and well illustrated.

A bit late to this video, but thank you for putting out the rulebook! I absolutely love it, perfect for adapting to all sorts of eras and campaigns. I use your welsh supplement for Gruffydd ap Llywelyn but also for the Cambro-Norman wars of the late 11th and early 12th centuries!

Pretty cool. Simple and to the point, which is the kind of ruleset I favor these days. There's plenty of good quality 28mm vikings, both metal and plastic, so there shouldn't be any trouble getting the minis.

The only thing I would add to the rules is pushback in both skirmish and big battles, successful hits cause the model to fallback 1 inch. Independent of damage. In melee The model which caused the hit can make a choice to follow up by moving into contact with the stricken model. This allows for more tactical decisions when playing objectives.

I'm may start getting into the game, right now I'm focused on finishing printing out kriegspiel divisions for my friends we are doing a fourth coalition campian.
Simple, easy to play and understand, low model count. I dig it! I might have to look into grabbing some dark ages models and giving this a go, i know theres some dark ages scottish/pictish models that would work awesomely, and should be period appropriate.

This is exactly the game that I was looking for. I have made three bands two Vikings and one Saxon. I plan to adapt the rules for à Rohan Isangard fight.

Love it! I’m excited to run some scenarios at the club and also introduce some new people to wargaming. The only thing I wish the rules had is something about taunting. May have to house rules that and require real ‘friendly” taunts that may have in game morale effects.
Great idea, Wes! In the Myth & Magic supplement we have coming out later this month the "spell casting" mechanic in there would be truly ideal for "Taunting" (and of course, that should be accompanied by real taunts at the tabletop between players!).
This game is so refreshing and fun. I REALLY wish you guys would expand upon it with more lists. Maybe even carry it over to a dark fantasy theme.

A buddy and I enjoyed a game last Sat. Just a couple of nits. In this video and the other, you say you always want to roll low; however, cover saves for missiles say to roll 4+, i.e. high. Also, according to the rules, there is a little more to a Death Worthy of a Song than just the attacker rolls a 1 and defender rolls a 6: that allows you a Free Attack which if successful then causes the Death Worthy of a Song.

Fantastic rules tried my first ever miniature wargame, all out fight to the death brawl in the english plains of East Anglia, pitching two rival danelaw kingdoms (yes i did it with chess figures(used 2 sets of these although you only need one) checkers pieces and lego given i just wanted to give it a chance and dont have proper miniatures or talent to produce some quick enough). So i placed a few 'trees' in key points next to the middle of the battlefield to give some sort of shelter from arrow fire before contact and a stream behind each army to encourage aggresiveness(working on some of your scenarios with the lego i have but this was a trial). It ended with a decisive victory last unit to go was the only 'death worthy of a song' from the battle to the soul black huscarl. Winning side sustained just under half the casualties. Gotta say it was a lot of fun! But then again i like history which is why i stumbled across this!
P. S. Just wanted to share my story of the first game for you all. Enjoy your Sunday!
So here's to the people that have chess figures, Checkers pieces and lego lingering around and want to play it without having miniatures still or the materials to set it up here's how i used them:
(Chess/Checkers - Viking/Saxon)
Vikings:
King - Jarl
Queen - Berserker
Bishop - Huskarl
Cavalry - Hirdman
Tower - Bondi Archer
Pawn - Bondi Spearmen
Checkers piece - Thrall (i didn't used them since they're not really required)
Saxons:
King - Lord
Queen - Hero (Saint or Priest)
Cavalry - Mounted Spearman
Tower - Hearthguard
Bishops - Veteran Fyrd
Checkers piece - Bowman
Pawn - Fyrd
If you want to try the advanced geld rules use the lego pieces(colours that arent token colours) as currency or something else you can work with
(also if you dont have a dice roll (D6) then use an online random number generator.)

Thank you for the fantastic game! I have a quick question. I am new to wargaming, and am wondering if you had any advice for assigning random troops for each side in a scenario? I am primarily interested in wargaming the Wars of the Roses.

We have links to 28mm miniature manufacturers at www.Ravenfeast.com and you can see where we got ours! Various guys in this club use Footsore, Victrix, and a lot of Gripping Beast. But there are plenty of good options.
Have you thought about doing a rules review using your point scoring system. You've reviewed Disposable Heroes done by a club member before now so you've handled that sort of thing before where's a conflict of Interest and it seemed fair :) Lastly will you be doing a Norman Army List and maybe a Ravenfeast 1066 sized mini-campaign with some what ifs if Saxons get beat and keeping track of the Historic Heroes in line to the throne to see who really wins that Game of Thrones and is the last Royal standing...

Really nicely done, and such a great tool for getting new players to try the hobby. I printed it off and also a copy for a friend.
I do have one question; why when shooting does cover give a 4+ save when everything else in the game you are trying to roll low? It's an easy fix, I'm going to just make cover a 3 or less. I can't wait for the next release of the Bonus Supplement on Dec 21st. Really fantastic idea.
There are two ways to look at the 50/50 cover situation, Erik. Totally understand your question, but the author of game was thinking about the shooter rolling low, a 1-3, to avoid the cover. But I understand if you're thinking about it from the target's perspective as a "saving throw."

Hello, a few months ago I played Ravenfeast with a friend and we found it very entertaining and simple to learn, but there is one thing that was not clear to us: When a model dies, can it continue fighting normally until it is removed from the battlefield?

I have seen the rules and I have watched your video's. You know what I like the most about this game? Appart from it being simple and quick? I have heard complaints about the lower cost units being useless. When I am going to try this out I am going to have fun finding a way to make them usefull. Not just using RAW but also with some house rules if necessary. This game is an fine basis to make something more out of it.
Glad you're able to make it your own, Alexander. That's part of the fun! Important to note on the low cost units that they are quite effective at ganging up on a Hero or Jarl. There is a penalty for being engaged by multiple enemies at once!

So the timing of this game is perfect. The video game, Assassins Creed: Valhalla was set in this exact time and setting, about a clan of Norse heading to England, warring with Saxons. Maybe finding a way to promote the game among fans of that video game might be a good way to get the word out and generate interest in the game?
This was the very first thing I thought when I heard about Ravenfeast just now (having beaten AC: Valhalla yesterday).

The base game of Ravenfeast is generic enough that you could absolutely use it for Hundred Years War! In fact, if you join the FB Group, I believe someone already has an army list designed for the medieval period.

Not a lot of cavalry was used in this period (at least, until the Normans arrived on the scene) but we do have a mounted soldier listed under the Saxon optional rule section of the book. Essentially, mounted soldiers are faster, have an extra wound, and hit a little harder in close combat.

Could you expand on the saving throws for ranged fire to explain how obstacles/intervening terrain works?

"Cover" from missile fire is handled very simply. For each piece of cover or obstacle between you and your target, you have to roll to see if the missile is deflected. There's a 50/50 chance that intervening cover will block the shot--roll a d6 and on a 1-3 the missile continues and on a 4-6 it's deflected. So if you're shooting at a guy behind a wall, you just make this cover roll once. The idea behind this rule is that it's simple and different types of cover are not considered--all cover is treated the same to avoid any other modifiers or questions.

If combating with a shield wall is it only the second rank that attacks and the front only defend?

Hey guys. Watched this video a few weeks ago. Decided to download the rules this past week. I host a monthly game day in my game barn. all of the guys come from sci-fi/fantasy but are open to historicals. Have one playing Chain of command already. I think this is a great bridge game because medieval has a fantasy feel and these guys come from skirmish gaming so now, I just need to sink the hook.
Questions - Under the Berserker you show a trait "suicidal bravery". I can't find a reference to this trait elsewhere in rules. Am I overlooking it?
I am assuming that in the points list, the total points per model already include the points for the traits listed.

Haha "suicidal bravery" is listed just as a fun bit of color under the "armor" of the berserker. Obviously, he has no actual armor! It's not an official trait in the game.
Could you also use this ruleset and apply it to small-scale battles with actual units for battles such as Hastings or the Battle on the Ice?
Indeed you could! And that's something we will be doing here on the channel later this year!
Where did you get the Viking miniatures?
I just got a copy of your rules for raven feast i going to use warlord vikings and the 1 from games workshop in 28mm can i use the normans as well saxons
Absolutely! Saxons are offered as an optional army list in this book and you could easily field Normans, too. Mounted troops appear in the Saxon list.
Love the rules! Question: Why did you go with low number being desirable? Seems counter-intuitive for those used to other rule-sets.
YEP. Tired of rules being this number or higher/ or lower.....just say this or higher like children's board games and stick with that
My guess would be because then it's easier to read the statline of each warrior as "higher is better". Every stat is higher-is-better because each roll is lower-is-better. It's a design decision and it makes sense to me (as long as it's kept consistent with few or no exceptions).
@@richardbradley2335 had they chosen "roll high for success", then the statline of each soldier should be read "low is better", instead of "high is better" as in Ravenfeast. So the roll becomes more intuitive but the statline gets less intuitive :)
A totally fair question and one that I'm not sure we can answer with certainty. Ravenfeast was originally a game written by our friend and fellow club mate Al, who passed away several years ago. We made as few changes as possible to his game and tried to stick to the original and "roll low" was the convention he used. As Andres commented, I always assumed that Al liked the idea of better warriors having better stats. Certainly you are correct to point out that in most games (though by no means all) a high roll is better.

Excellent! Are these rules converted into 6mm by simply changing inches to centimeters?
That would certainly work, or you could even leave the measurements in inches for faster movement and play. If you convert to CM you'd want to shrink the playing area down to maybe 3'x3'.

Question about the Myth & Magic expansion: can warbands recruit monsters? For example, Norse recruiting wolves?
No one has ever asked that before, but I don't see why not!
On page 12 of the rules, it says under melee modifiers "-1 Melee rating if engaged by multiple enemies (except in Shield Wall)". In a game, my players couldnt agree if that meant the (non shield wall) attackers were against a shield wall that meant they wouldnt take a -1 for multiple combatants. On the other hand, the other player thought this meant that if the attacker is part of a shield wall, he does not get the -1. Could you please elaborate on that? Thank you.
Can we get a campaign book/s for more scenarios for both historical and mythological? I love this game. This is me and my friends first wargame, we can't get enoufgh.

Where did you get the coward and blood tokens from?
You can use anything you want for those. I use pennies with colored stickers on them, but the tokens you saw in the video were purchased years ago by a club member at an educational store for school teachers!
Is it possible to play in 6mm?
Yes, there's a Big Battle conversion under the Optional Rules section that allows you to use the same core game mechanics so that a "unit" (could be 6mm) equals a "figure" in the standard skirmish version.
And if you do individual 6mm Vikings then absolutely post pics!

I'm not sure about inverting the normal understanding of dice roll is really a good ploy for beginners. Scoring a 6 for success is ingrained in us.
But then the stats would be reversed. Lower stats would be better. It's always a trade off somewhere with game design.
Rules look good. Looking forward to using them in anger when we're all allowed to mingle again.
Quick question: while playing around with building a warband, if I set my point limit to 500 as per some of the scenarios I can easily exceed the 12-20 model limit suggested in the book.
Is this reasonable/expected to happen with high point games?
For example:
Jarl, Huskarl x3, Berserker x2, Hirdman x5, Archer x4, Bondi x5, Thrall x3 is 23 models and 492 points.
Our point suggestions are really just that--suggestions. So you're welcome to go above 500 points if you like. In our experience, the game does start to bog down a little bit once you get more than 30 figures on the table per player (which is why our preferred format is about two dozen per player).

Question: I don't have any miniatures but we have a ton of Lego guys, even some dressed ask kings and knights etc. Have you ever seen a game done with Lego men and Lego terrain and buildings? Maybe I can get my son interested.
General rule of thumb when it comes to war-games, if your group is okay with it, then go ahead. Some people people might have issues with it, and some game stores (cough games workshop cough) have policies against proxies. But otherwise you're good.
ABSOLUTELY! Use those Legos all day long! That's a great ideas to try and introduce some light, easy wargaming rules to your son!

We are guilty of plenty of long-form videos on this channel but when it comes to teaching how to play a game, the shorter the better! I still believe that the best "introductory" video I've ever seen for a game is the Wings of Glory "how to play" video. Lovely production values, teaches all the core mechanics, and it's very short.

Still there, though we did hear the website is blocked in Mr. Putin's fiefdom. He, apparently, is not a fan of free historical Viking games!

So is it possible for a round of combat to end with both models dead? Making it so you’d have option to cancel hits with your own hits could be neat
Yes, it is possible to wind up with both models dead at the same time! One of the things we've always loved about Ravenfeast is that because it's such a simple core system, adding house rules and special traits is easy to try. You could certainly add some kind of hit-cancelling possibility!

Some of these are classic Foundry sculpts! Good eye.
How does it compare to SAGA?
This game is much, much shorter and easier than SAGA. One example--in SAGA you roll dice to determine what you can do each turn and match up those dice combinations to a sheet of options and orders. In Ravenfeast you don't roll anything at all--you just move all of your figures when it's your turn. This is game you can play from a single sided quick reference sheet and SAGA is just more detailed. But we very much recommend players graduate to more complex games like SAGA after getting their feet wet with Ravenfeast!
