As my stepdaughter says a real father steps up. Like my did for me.
The 1st time I met the man I called daddy I was 3yrs. The sperm donor knocked up my mom when he was dropping off my sister off from their weekend visit. He never believed I was his & you know what God sent me my daddy. I was blessed to have him, he was my protector & he chose to love me. It'll be 16yrs in July since he's been gone & I miss him everyday. People please cherish your loved ones, we're not guaranteed tomorrow. I lost both my mum 64yrs & dad 56yrs are young ages, so please tell yours you love them & spend time with them.
I hope my girls remember me like this.

There's so much to love about this song and the video! Of course the lyrics and message but then adding a hard of hearing or deaf child and a mother with very short hair makes it even better!

Crazy I recently reconnected with an old friend and met her son. I spent the day hanging out helping them move houses back to my town and she saw how I connected with her boy and that night made me go dad so if anything happens to her she wants me to take and raise him. She says I am better to him than his bio dad and he already said he loves me.

This song reminds me of my dad coming in and doing everything for us when no one else would. My brother and sister still have their biological father living, but my sperm doner passed away in the hospital in 2002 or 2003 when I was 1. So out of the three of us I'm the closest to my dad. And when a person cries from hearing this song like I did, you know that you have a soul.

Elvie Shane was on American Idol. He had a problem with drugs and went to prison for a while. When he got out he met his wife and her son who he adopted later on. He said he knew he had to get clean because she wouldn’t put up with it. They’ve been married since and her son calls him dad. This song was written for him.

Yes the boy in the music video is his actual son Elvie Shane's wife was raising him at the time she met her soon husband-to-be which makes the boy his stepson.

Edit: The boy was 5 in the music video now he's in high school. Elvie Shane also wrote the my Girl version but in the my girl version he's referring to his daughter who was born on the 20th of July on a Tuesday but, Google isn't telling me what year it was.

TRue story....Elvie actually met a woman who was bartending....he took her out and she told him she had a son. They fell in love and he met the boy. He fell hard for this kid. They got married and he takes care of him like his own. They had no children together. He wanted his step son to know, he is his father no matter blood or not. Hes been there for him ever since the day they met....Blood is thicker than water, however, LOVE is thicker than blood....He did make a girl version for step fathers out there who had a girl so they can play for them...which is nice!! I had a son and daughter 3 & 4 and I met my husband. My son is now 16 and daugher is almost 18. Hes been there every day. Cheering from the stands at every game, dance recital and basketball outside. They been calling him dad for thirteen years. First song we found that he has dedicated to him and her. The boy and The girl version....Elvie is like many fathers out there, I refuse to say "step" at the end of the sentence because, if you are man enough to take care of a child that is NOT yours, then you can be called FATHER/DADDY!!!! Lets say my daugther is the apple of my husbands eye....last night on a school night, my son stayed up playing video games on my husbands only night off. They get away with anything with him. Hes amazing father.

It was used at the end of the movie Knocked Up, starring my Vancouver boy and Point Grey Secondary alumnus Mr. Seth Aaron Rogen. And yes, there is a real guy named "Steve Fogel" - but he never went by "McLovin" in real life. There was CTV or CBC News report on it that I saw and they interviewed the actual guy the character was modelled after. When McLovin says, "15th and Granville," those of us who knew there was a liquor store in the 90s will nod in approval. A lot of the jokes in that movie were inside jokes that you'd have to be from or at least visited Vancouver to really get. This was exactly what it was like to be a teen in the 90s.
