I understood like 3 minutes of this... then it was using terms and abbreviations so fast I lost track of WTF was going on or being explained. it quickly devolved into technobabble that my brain got stuck processing on something and the rest of the explanation was background noise. its only good if you already have a basic grasp of the babble.
Good tutorial, however, VERY IMPORTANT thing about the IFF: many planes, like the mig23 for example, DO NOT have IFF active when in MTI mode or pulse doppler, only when in search mode! People dont know this and it's one of the reason why betrayals in sim are so common
@@SPFLDAngler he didnt, he said that some planes do not have IFF, which is true, the problem is that some planbes do have IFF but not on all of their modes and this leads to a lot of confusione specially in sime where you see mig23 player teamkilling all the time and then say "but you were marked as enemy"
Thanks for those tips, everyone has a different perspective of how to use the radar modes. I was using TWS on my F-14 for so long and I had a hard time in some situations. Though I use a Tartarus peripheral only to control manually my radar locks for it to be more useful

IMO turning "Target cyclic switching of aircraft radar" off is more beneficial in WT's target-rich environments. It's absolutely better if there aren't a lot of targets to lock, but when the radar scope is filled with half a dozen to over a dozen targets, slowly cycling through each one can get REALLY annoying, especially since there's no way to select the previous target, meaning overshooting forces you to cycle through however many enemies in the radar scope AGAIN. But if you have TWS, using it gives you the best of both worlds: fast acquisition of exact targets AND an easy lock at the click of a button without having to "aim" the antenna on a moving target.
This is fair, just personally the time fiddling with it isn't worth it IMO. I find that just mashing the cycle button is faster, at least for me. It can definitely be useful for sure.
also when you unlock planes with TWS you are basically forced to use manual controls, otherwise the radar will do whatever it wants and follow the first enemy it sees no matter what
@@ccclll987 It's that bad with target cycling? Damn. At this point I think they should just make the manual controls stick to targets regardless of if you have TWS, just without a soft lock if you don't. It would be a MASSIVE QoL change and give you the best of both worlds no matter your radar.

The best thing would be autoselection of the first target you see as when autocycling is on, but then with the possibility to manually unselect the target and move the cursor elsewhere. Unfortunately right now it's not possible, so at least in sim you are basically forced to use the manual selection mode. That means basically that you need 3 extra control axis, 1 for cursor up/down, one for cursor left/right, and one for antenna tilt up/down. Im glad I have the x56 as hotas, otherwise I wouldnt really knwo where to put all those keys
If radar lock enemy, I see some video of other able to change target left to right vice versa without changing lock status. Is there a bind? so that I don't need to un-lock then re lock a new target and is it also a particular radar mode as well

Average Lee W Something I think that has to be said when explaining Pulse Doppler. Some people may have noticed PD HDN and PDV are a bit interesting, as instead of a target’s range being displayed, it reads off a target’s “speed”. This is NOT improperly modeled. The current radar modes we have (besides look down and MTI, so just SRC, PD, PDV, PD HDN) are differentiated by Pulse Repeat Frequency, or PRF. Low PRF is pulse mode. The radar transmits a wave, then only sends out another after a return is received. This allows for proper ranging of targets, however there isn’t enough information received by the radar to properly determine closure. Simply put, Low PRF has low range ambiguity, high pulse ambiguity. Just PD in War Thunder is modeled as medium PRF, which has a middle ground between low and high (which will be explained in just a bit). High PRF, or PD HDN and PDV in war Thunder, is different from low PRF because of, well, a higher PRF (shocking I know). In an oversimplified explanation, the radar constantly sends pulses, instead of waiting for a return. The constant returns allows the radar provide plentiful data for the radar to find closure, thus giving this mode a low Doppler ambiguity. However, the constant returns prevent the radar from properly finding a range from a target, as the radar cannot differentiate its own waves, thus it has a high range ambiguity. This high range ambiguity and low Doppler ambiguity is the reason why PD and PD HDN are displayed in closure; it just has more information about an aircraft’s closure than it does its range. So wait, what’s up with the big bar? Radars with some from of Pulse Doppler have a filter to avoid ground clutter. If a return has a closure within a certain closure range, the radar will filter it, considering it just ground clutter. This range is displayed in high PRF as the giant horizontal bar at the bottom.

Two short lines show the effective maneuvering zone of the missile you have selected (essentially like maximum and minimum range). the long line matches the range of the enemy contact locked. Basically if the long line is above both short lines then there's no hope your missile can hit it. If it's below both short lines then you're too close and the missile would not track. Ideal situation is to have the target in between the lines (that said the enemy can still maneuver to position themselves outside those lines after you fired the missile)

I tried using the beyond range lock and it just didn’t track anyone and when I used ACM it just didn’t lock onto anyone. Maybe it’s time I quit I really wanted to get into top teir but this stuffs too complicated for me and it makes me sad because I can’t enjoy what I grinded for
Biggest advice I can give is to only use PD in the F-4J in a headon, it works terribly rear aspect. Not sure what's going on with the normal lock since I can't see your screen but that is probably the issue with ACM.

with all the new buttons needed to be added, hot keys are getting scarce. and I am not one to use ctrl/alt combos (as they have functions on their own already as well). you almost need another full set of keys. and then remembering what is what can be VERY confusing like you are playing two games at once. one is a flight sim the other is a radar simulator. and all these terms are confusing I still don't understand what "notching" is. a simplified version of this video would be nice, even if 3-5 minutes longer some simple explanations as to what was just said would be great. this whole radar and firing from 40km out are HUGE reasons why I typically avoid playing above a certain BR. this reminds me of those "learn to play guitar for beginners" videos "this is an E cord, this is an D cord, this in a G cord , this is a F chord, now lets put those together and you get this"......... huh? WTF? people that do these things on a regular often forget that MOST PEOPLE DONT UNDERSTAND.....
I recommend binding most of your radar controls to your numpad, that's where I put all of mine. As for notching, I thought I explained it in the video, my apologies. Notching is when you fly perpendicular to the enemy radar so you reach a similar relative speed as the ground, this causes the radar to filter out your contact as pulse doppler is looking for speed change to find targets. Does that help at all? Any other questions?

They serve no other purpose except for spotting, didn't feel the need to include them. And you can use them if the spotting system is being silly, although most of them can't actually lock

I should have mentioned that in the video, it slipped my mind. It's a simple rangefinding radar, and you can but I personally usually keep it on as it slaves your missiles if they have radar slaving

maybe here is a right place to ask: With my F-14 I often have the problem, that my radar stays in ACQ-Mode like forever but is totally unable to lock any enemy even pointed directly towards it. Am I just too dumb to use it correctly or is this a bug? Also seems my RWR to be totally broken. I often get radarlocks from nearly everywhere. Once I got a lock from a friendly...wich was flying in front of be...into the same direction
It's a bug, happens with all radar sadly 😭. Also with the RWR, they recently made it more sensitive so the backlobe of radar is picked up, and ground units from across the map ahaha
I didn't include it in this vid since it's technically not radar, but it simply searches and tracks for targets using their heat signatures instead. It's nice since it can't be fooled by chaff and doesn't warn enemies, but is much lower range and can only be used to slave missiles prior to launch. I only run TWS radar on the F14, you can go from "soft-lock" to lock with 1 button while still keeping an eye on them. Nice Phoenix shots

Does IRST do anything? I would think it would help a heat seeker hold a target
I didn't include it in this vid since it's technically not radar, but it simply searches and tracks for targets using their heat signatures instead. My best advice is to bind multiple buttons to one action. Like squad marking for me is left on Dpad and LB

Just cycle your ACM button :) press once to go to ACM, again to go to HMD, then again to go back to normal radar
