Hammock / Fishnet string figure - Step by step tutorial

- This is my second hammock string video tutorial. This one is sometimes called the Fishnet. I go through it step by step very slowly from the user's point of view, so you can follow along. It's easy once you get the hang of it, so don't give up. Keep trying if you can't get it. If you have trouble, pause the video and really look carefully at which strings I am using.

TO ANYONE WHO GETS TANGLED WHEN DROPPING THE THUMB :
In the first step (aka the set-up step), when you make a cross the centre, look carefully which side of the string is on top of the cross.
If the LEFT side of the string is on top of the cross, you should use your RIGHT middle finger to proceed the next step.
Similarly, if the RIGHT side of the string is on top, you should use your LEFT middle finger to proceed.
I basically reminded myself "Never The Same Side" every time I started the hammock.

When i was in fifth grade, string tricks became popular out of nowhere and everyone had one of these wrapped around their wrists like a bracelet at all times so they could do this stuff and i swear this was one of the only tricks i could do

This is awesome. I am an organist, so I understand the finger-control. And executing these steps rapidly is a practiced skill. Very cool! I remember doing Cat's Cradle a little bit in my childhood. But these exercises are really useful, and definitely entertaining. I love it!

I'm currently watching all your string trick videos. once it's ingrained in my memory, its a great way to keep my hands busy when i'm watching tv. i'll definitely be showing my nieces and nephews once i'm able to visit.

Watch in the beginning, the crossing of the strings the left one is on top of the right one, you are probably doing the right on top of the left, just by a tiny thing the whole thing ca be wrong, watch carefully what she does and you’ll have it right!! try using your other hand first, in the first step.

Pick it up with your left hand first instead of starting with the right hand if that makes sense XD

This video is great. It was perfect the way you did it sped up at the end so I could try it faster without having to watch the slower tutorial again. Loved doing these as a kid:) Relearned Jacob's Ladder and now I've learned the hammock!!

It turns out that the direction of the initial twist matters! (Depending on which hand you start the first move with.)

When you cross the x start with the opposite middle finger you crossed with it took me the past 7 minutes to figure this out or the same middle finger but I have this problem too

+Steve McDog You must be turning it the wrong way when you are making the 'X' at the beginning. Turn the string away from your body instead of towards it. Then drop the thumbs. Hope this helped!

Make sure u twist it with ur left hand if u twist it with ur right they connect

My grandma born in 1911 taught me as a child this game. She had a name for each figure (the cradle, the rail, the fish, the mirror, the bed). I could not imagine that it could be know outside of Europe.

The initial X is not symmetric: it matters which string is above the other.
I found you turn it away from you (near string goes on top)
