If paul dies while she's in prison, she'll never forgive herself for not been there for him at the end, maybe she'll think twice about dealing with stolen goods in the future

Considering her son Paul is dying, one would think the judge would be a little more sympathetic and give her hard community service instead of prison time, unless they are showing their is no compromise when it comes down to a crime, but also no one died so why be so harsh
