How was it an abusive relationship when she was a willing, consenting adult the entire time they were together? When she wanted out, she left. When she wanted him back, she returned. Him being rich had no effect on Ana either and that's mentioned numerous times in the book. So yes, there are lots of aspects that you are missing.

She shows him love and actually points out that what he knew was actually child abuse. If you read all three books then you would see that.

The director Sam Taylor-Johnson did an excellent job piecing it all together and followed the book really well. I read the book after I watched the movie (which was about a week ago) and was highly disappointed. The book is very redundant, shallow in building the depth of its characters, not persuasive, and most often times distasteful. The screen writer did an excellent job in conveying every important message in the book and making those conversations seem much more sophisticated. . . Everyone seems to knock this movie, but I'll say they all did their very best with the material they were given. Excellent. . . Waiting for the movie 50 Shades Darker now!
