Grid Operator Certification Exam is Getting Tougher; NERC is Changing Their Exam Questions Again (Perspectives on Energy). The host for this show was Jay Fidell. The guest was Guillermo Sabatier.
The discussion was: The North American Electric Reliability Corp (NERC) has always been updating their System Operator exam over the years, but the more recent changes seem to move the knowledge assessment more towards a comprehensive understanding of the grid reliability topics. There are an increasing number of questions that attempt to gauge a test takers knowledge by measuring how well they respond to system scenarios rather than to rely mostly on recall and memorization. This has certainly made the exam more challenging, as can be seen by the slightly reduced pass rates, but the payoff is a better prepared System Operator.
The takeaway was: As the NERC exam gets more challenging, will test takers be able to continue to rely on their own study and experience to pass or would they need exam prep to succeed? The grid operators certainly need the best qualified operators, so this new exam seems to make sure of that.
