I tried many many speakers in my pro Junior/ even 12 inch models with a custom cabinet. The P10R is my absolute favorite. With almost every other speaker, I want to have a bright switch to have more brightness, with the tone all the way on 12, and also, the other speakers all seem too loud. In the 12” size, Jensen P12R and a very very old Celestion G12S-20 are supreme. I think the key is lightweight magnet, low efficiency. With the Jensens, I can use the tone knob more effectively, I think. Superb tones, and great video!
I have a PJ IV Ltd Tweed, that came with the P10R. I had a G10 Greenback lying around, and swapped them. Both are great, but in different ways. For me the Greenback was better, giving some more ooomph and less ice pick. A trick with the greenback is to up the tone a little bit, or all the way if the volume is cranked. I also use a Dr Z Brake Lite attenuator to tame the volume. Next step is to make a switch for the negative feedback and do some tube rolling with different (old) preamp tubes. I guess cranked amp, greenback, old mullard tubes and no NFB will be what I end up with. 😀
I bought a open box Pro Junior and after a few months the Jensen's paper ripped and was obviously flubby. I put a 10" greenback in and it's now a keeper.
Hi there! You have a cozy, homely studio, I love it! It is not by chance that Fender Pro Junior IV's are basically built with these Jensen speakers. If a manufacturer equips a certain combo with a certain speaker, that is because they think that that certain combo sounds the best with that certain speaker! In fact I do not understand what was the thought behind that combo with a Greenback speaker... But it is fascinating to see how much the speaker itself matters!!! Rock on!!!
I wanna try the P10R-Fen it's supposed to fix the ice pick. It was developped for custom shop amps and oddly is much cheaper, being not the historically accurate reproduction that the regular P10r is.
Sounds so good! I have 2 pro juniors, one I’ve had since I got it new in ‘98. I got a bigger cabinet for the second one and have a 12” speaker in that one. Have you swapped tubes in yours? I mostly play at home now, 12ay7’s tame these nicely so I’m not blowing my ears out. Very good video!
This is a great video comparison. I have a vox pathfinder 15r that I was thinking of upgrading the 8 inch speaker to a 10". I thought I wanted greenbacks but after this video the Jensen p10r sounds great. Thoughts on what might work best in the vox pathfinder?
I have a couple Pathfinder 15Rs and I upgraded one to a Jenson P10R. The stock speaker on the P15R is pretty damn good. The P10R has touch more clarity but the were pretty close. The bulldog speaker has more bass and mids and sounds fuller all around... However the P10R was brand new vs a well played 12 year old bulldog so perhaps after being broken it could have been closer. The P10Q might be a better choice...
Nice. I put a 10” 65 Creamback in mine and really like it. Though I will say this amp, regardless of speaker, is really ice-picky. A compressor or low-gain overdrive helps tame the high frequency spikes.
I am hoping to pickup a yerasov clone of this amp for 50 bucks shortly. If the seller is responsive, dont think they know what they have. That clone has the tubes hardwired to the chassis not to the pcb, so should be durable, have some tubes lying around so I should be fine for 50. Always liked the pro junior but big brand I found it too expensive for what is was. Pray with me for this clone for this price.
I read in the scriptures that Hendrix bought two Vox Virtuosos that were custom made with a 12 inch speaker, I aspire to run one with two tens and one with a twelve, or one AlNiCo and one Greenback, for that blend of tones. Good tasty tens are actually pretty scarce in the wild, and I guess that someone is going to have to die before I can score another Virtuoso... 🎸
I have an idea to try each of my amplifiers with each of the compatible speakers that I have, thinking that I might discover some magical combinations that I may not be aware of yet. 2024 is the year of the Marshall for me, I have almost every Vox that I need, and I'm going to finally address the Marshall-shaped hole in my tone. I started with the speakers, of course, and I have to say that I am appreciative of the Marshall slant cab, it seems quite different to the open-back stuff that I have favored. (Well, I did get a reissue with a open back and AlNiCo T0652s, for my third Marshall cab... I just keep reverting I guess. )

Often it’s just a matter of taste and preference. It’s not better or worst. I like it both

It’s hard to tell because I don’t know that amp well. The greenback is a solid option but the P10R is a classic. It’s on Bassman and super reverb….

Very different! Less compressed and more midrange. Sounds more like a tweed era amp

These are two different pro junior se . the pro junior is a tweed amp and the se is either for black, red or fawn
