Thank you for all the information! Possibly a stupid question but, when you say a variable ND is a ND polarizer, does that mean a variable ND gives you the benefits of both? Meaning stopping down the light while also managing reflections?
Not quite. The VND is a sandwiched polarizer so that as you twist you cross polarize and get less light. The downside to this is that you can't control when you polarize. Nisi makes a 6 Stop CPL which has the benefits of both polarizer and ND, but it's only 6 Stops. So with a VND you are going to get polarized skies even if you don't want them. Hence the VND is invaluable for video where you are trying to get 180 degree shutter and are more concerned with that than whether your skies are polarized unevenly or not.
