Big Antique & Vintage Deals at Area’s Largest Flea Market!

- Indoors and out, the Cloverdale, BC swap meet is a 50-year fixture in the heart of Vancouver's metro area! It's become the biggest weekly flea market north of San Francisco, with a lot of cool stuff we don't often see stateside. What will we find that will cheer our collectors...and at what price?
Turns out the deals are great here! We pick up alexandrite glass, 1950s shaker sets and a fabulous 50's T-Bird promo car for prices as low as $3.50 US, and enjoy seeing a fun and different variety of old things we think our American collectors might like too. A Blue Mountain Pottery fish, a Glo-Hill crhome and bakelite tray, local vintage comics, currency and hockey gear are a few unique -to-Canada finds we score, while a Wade Hyperfloogie leaves us laughing...and scratching our heads!
There's so many fun things to see in this lively flea market...old toys, guitars and mandolins, great antique advertising, cameras in unusual early colors, even a booth full of fossils capture our attention! We move inside to find buildings filled with charming Staffordshire china, take note of the new interest in old cut crystal, comb costume jewelry bins, uncover Northwest ethnography, and find a piece of Haeger Earth Wrap that comes with an offer that's hard to refuse.
It's so fun to get to shop and show so many different things, and this isn't even the antique show weekend! We'll have to plan another trip north of the border to see what the dealers bring when yet another barn fills with wonderful antiques and vintage...but in the meantime, it's time to list everything we got in anticipation of taking it back across the border.

Great video George! Thanks for sharing!
You bet!
I work in Anoka MN. Would love to have that beer can, they sell very quickly at the antique store
We had that purple cow salt & pepper when I was little!!
So cute!
w0w such problems at the border. Thanks, George.
It turned out to be easy this time!
Ha, the Trailer Double Duty thing was brilliant ETA: hey, I noticed not a lot of Chalet or Lorraine Art Glass???
No you’re right! I found it at the other big flea market and in the antique malls though
Having grown up right on the St John River in Northern Maine, crossings were very normal for a long time.. then came a a change where you had to show a license and Id forgotten mine in a tent as we were camping in the western mountains of Maine and were going to get breakfast in Canada. They had us pull over for more questioning and possibly a search.. when asked where I grew up I replied Frenchville , Maine.. the border guy looked at me and said.. well that explains everything and let us go... not sure how I feel about that
Our son was born in Edmunston , New Brunswick, Canada as it was closer to go to that hospital( 5 mins) than the closest one in US ( 45 mins)
Lol! I don't know if that was nice, but yes, it is more difficult to cross than it once was.
I just won those teapot kitty shakers at auction for $2! Seeing that you would pick them out of the lineup makes me even more excited to pick mine up! ☺️
That is awesome!
We had the same Bellflower plants established over roof height around our patio. We ended up with two kittens who liked running up and down it. We didn't figure out till later on why they liked it exactly so much because the Sapp is hallucinogenic they used to climb up and down it with their claws and then it would be the white sap all up and down and apparently it's soaked enough into their skin..😂
Oh wow! Trippy kitties. That's funny! Very pretty flowers but maybe not pet friendly
@@TheAntiqueNomad 😁😁😁😁
I had to laugh George when you said nothing old enough for me. I said I am. Just set me on a shelf w/a price. lol
What fun to see so many items and hear so much about them. You really are amazing George to be able to retain so much info.
Loved & blessings for all your work for all of us.
Thanks so much! I do really enjoy sharing this with you.
I love the Cloverdale Flea Market, it was the place to go every weekend!
It's still good!
Wow, this swap meet is wonderful, I could spend a fortune and a few days there just looking. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us and explaining some of the earlier glassware as well. Did not realize the look alike Wedge wood was a thing and so beautiful too. You have a great day and safe travels
Yep, me too 🎉
Have Miss Priss cookie jar, s/p. Bought them off EBay couple yrs ago. Really love her look, husband does not. 54yrs married, such opposite likes😉 Thanks George.🙂👍
I get it, being with an "opposite" too! We each have our own areas to set up so we cope okay.
Thank you George,, nice to see this flea marlket and learn about the items for sale. Hope u are enjoying all these journeys i think all of us are ! 😊😊
So glad to hear that, I really am!
Minute 28:23 your eyes did the same thing as mine so I had to double take. Initially it doesn't appear prong set, but it actually was. It may have even been Sherman based on the rounded back plating of the inner circle of chatons. As well as the short, blunt tipped prongs on the front. I've only been recently educating myself on Sherman, but you are in Canada so the odds are greater haha
Oh, I see that now! Sherman is hard to find these days
@@TheAntiqueNomad Gosh don’t I know it! That’s one of the things that I get asked if I have in my whatnot shows and the answer is always no 😭
Thank you for taking us along!❤
I have the Miss Priss salt and pepper! I love them!
So cute!
What a great antique and flea market. So many interesting things. Please Stay Safe Happy and Healthy Have A Wonderful Day
Thanks George❤
Ooo, I don't think I have ever seen the BMP fish platter. I am such a sucker for our Cdn pottery and glass. I have a really cool maple leaf shaped maple syrup bottle from Beauce Pottery listed on eBay right now. Beautiful ochre yellow glaze.
They made some really good pottery in Canada! I hadn't had that piece before. It went to live in Long Beach, California
I used to live in the “Halloween Capital of the World” aka Anoka, MN. We had a Halloween parade every year where we got out of school early on that day. The whole town would show up.
How fun!
That Earthwrap piece was really nice though! ;) Great vid George ✌🏼
I liked it a lot! Sold one this weekend at Springfield, Ohio...wish I'd had that one now
Thank you for sharing border restrictions and tips....its so helpful!❤
It's worth going up there, as long as you're prepared!
Good tips about border considerations.
It's a little silly to have to worry, but I've had US Border Patrol be pretty harsh on two occasions even though I wasn't over my duty limit because it wasn't all for personal use.
@@TheAntiqueNomad It just blows me away that they care about the personnel vs resale. It's used! Those items have also been taxed to death and in many areas, we still have to pay taxes on it. 🤪 Here in Canada, the CRA makes eBay send tax information to them, so eBay gets to tax us on taxes to off set the cost of that. I don't even make enough on eBay to claim the taxes up here. It's bordering on the ridiculous. 😅
@@angelad.8944 it’s the same in the US now. Too many really big sellers were skirting the taxes so the retailers complained about unfair competition and now we all get a tax form. As for Canada, at least your border patrol will let us resellers declare an item as antique for you so it’s not subject to duty…
@@TheAntiqueNomad That makes sense and I can understand that perspective for sure. Nice to hear the border agency gives you some breaks. ☺
Love your videos. You go slow enough for us to view things also. You are also so knowledgeable. We learn a lot from you!😊❤
Thank you! I'm glad to do this
You get a discount on everything when you calculate the exchange😄
Love the Chatter between sellers & pickers while you sorted through sale & peppers , bottles 😂 really fun & showed the flavor of the event 😅
Thanks, I like to leave it in when it's audible, it's the flavor of the place!
That Dr Pepper mirror was awesome!! Thank you!!
Great design I agree
Like your dead pan jokes 😂
My dry sense of humor...I'm glad people get it
Dang! I missed it! Son in law had to come over & pick the 🔐 of my steamer trunk that "someone" locked & weren't supposed to! 😂 Found a few things I'd had saved for no reason that will go to Custers this year ! Going to watch the 2 videos now. See ya later!
Oh I'm glad you got it open, I had to pry mine open and I didn't even have a lock!
I live in the area. Love going to the Cloverdale Swap Meet. Even just to look. Always interesting.
So cool! I'd go every week if I lived there.
Good evening, George. Those wood buoys interested me. I'm trying to come up with a way I could use something like that 😂 I liked some of those decanter/cordial sets. Liked the masks. The Dr Pepper mirror was nice, but I'd want an original...probably couldn't afford an original, though 😜 That _The Unexpected_ book would've been mine. That's my kind of read. I have some cigarette cards, but most of mine are Mae West and Jenny Lind. There are a few others that are...eh. Loved all the rocks/crystals. I have a complete set of the Wade Nursery Rhyme minis, and Humpty Dumpty is among the lot. Several things there interested me, but I'd be like 😤 having to deal with the border thing. Thanks for taking us along!
I thought it would be fun to string lights between the buoys and use on a patio! The masks are very much of this region and I appreciate them because I grew up around them. I'd love a Dr. Pepper original mirror, but yes, they are in the $1000s now. The Unexpected looked interesting, I should've gotten it but I wasn't really focused on books in that space! Mae West is a real favorite of mine...cigarette cards include a lot of English actors unfamiliar to me. It's a bit of challenge to get the whole Nursery Rhyme set! The border thing turned out this time to be effortless, took about 1 minute and no problems...you never know how the US Border Patrol will be though.
@@TheAntiqueNomad The lights strung in the buoys is a good idea! I don't have a patio, though. Not surprising, at all, that the original Dr Pepper mirrors are in the $1000s.. I think I have quite a few of the Mae West cigarette cards, but only like three or four of Jenny Lind. The Jenny Lind ones aren't as easy to find as some of the others. I've had the Wade Nursery Rhyme set for a lot of years...don't even remember when or where I got it. I have it displayed in an old printer's drawer, hanging on the wall, among wood spools of thread that still have thread on them. It'd be nice if the US Border Patrol were consistent, but, like everything else...
14:42 The Canuks name plates most likely were over the players lockers in the locker room. Vintage with the flying skate.
I think Canadians like their Tim Horton's more than McDonald's especially here in Ontario! Thank's for your great videos George!
I might have to disagree. Believe it or not, McDonald's coffee is waaaay better than Tim's now. A few years back, Tim's abandon their coffee contract and Mc's picked it up. Try it and you won't be disappointed.
I like Horton's, we're seeing them in the US now
Yup, lots and lots of Blue Mountain around the Vancouver area! The green drip pieces seem ubiquitous.
Yes, I don't see the unusual colors much though
Alexandrite!
Knew you'd appreciate that
Looked like a fun market to end your trip north! Happy you treated yourself to a getaway "work" trip!
Thanks, me too!
Hi George, They had interesting items, many you don’t see in the States. Even with the exchange rate, I thought the prices were a little high being that it was a flea market. For example, the seltzer bottle. They wanted $45. With the exchange rate, it would have been about $33.50. It’s an ok price, but not a great bargain given the condition. Thanks for taking us along.
I love that about shopping up there! And yes, the prices really seem to vary at the flea market, but since there aren't a lot of antique shows in BC you have professional dealers selling alongside flea market folks.
GrandDad gave us original Maguffy Readers.
" Ann can fan Nat" .
I saw a later copy in this video
Oh neat! I missed that one
My mom used to collect Blue Mountain Pottery
Your mom had great taste. From, another Lynn
I liked it the first time I saw it!
The things at 14:45 that reminded you of placecards reminded ME of when I was in Los Angeles walking around the tv studio parking lots...the parking spaces were marked with similar looking placards that could be peeled up and removed. I think they were easily removable so ppl could just take one as a souvenir? Idk!!! More likely they were easy to remove so they could be replaced just as easily. For some dumb some reason I peeled up and took a placard from the Bold and the Beautiful (soap opera) parking section. I dont even like soap operas so why I took it I dont know haha! Anyways, maybe thats what those were...parking placards? Just a guess George!
Oh that's interesting! Makes sense with such giant parking lots.
@@TheAntiqueNomadI was thinking locker room name plates!
Back in the days when I talked my parents into buying me a Matchbox Car, they were displayed in a circular case that turned. Once you selected your car, a clerk would present one to you in a small box.
Cool! By the time I recall them, they were hung on racks
I wonder if you’d be less likely to get stopped with your Nexus pass. I’m getting mine soon.
I'm going to get Global Sentry for car and airline travel
ok, lol. In the Terminator Voice.... " I'll be Baack".
Love the Canadiana
Me too! I have a couple more videos from Vancouver to come, including agreat antique mall next Monday
🤗🇨🇦👍
My old stomping grounds. Love the place. Too bad I’m on the island. 😻
I want to shop over there too!
Wow, that guy around 3 minutes has good lungs 🫁 😂
Thank you George, as always.
I know, right?
18:13 I'd have made off with that paperback book so I could read it. Classic 50s/60s SF is in my GIMMETHAT category. The blue rock was Duomortierite, not dumontierite. It's supposed to be dark blue. Not worth a ton, but pretty. 24:22 I have one of those cork scenes, new in box. Paid a whopping dollar. If I were bringing stuff over the border, it would probably be all jewelry, and plausible deniability would be a big help at that point. (LOL)
It was a cool book! I like reading from that era too. Thank you for the correction on the minerals, not really my strong suit. Jewelry is the thing to buy, small and easy to explain away
$800.00 is a pretty good deal . I was wondering what the limit was . So I guess cigar boxes made in Cuba is out of the question ?
The BMP fish is one of the more common ones . And I found that the blue green colour combo is harder to sell . Up here folks seem to like the brown/ red glaze the best . Just my observation …
There is definitely more of the blue and green, but that piece sold right away! I noticed they made a few of them, but I hadn't owned one in the past
Hope you are enjoying 🇨🇦 Canada ! Is it your first visit?
I love Canada, haven't been in 7 years but I've probably hit this market a half-dozen times before
I got a Blue Mountain duck from a thrift store for $3
Great deal!
❤
What items do you like to look for when you go places?
So many! I'm a generalist and a maximalist, stick with me and you'll see a lot of variety. I'm liking pottery a lot right now

With the potential for such a hassel at the border, I would not bother with Canada. Jus sayin 🤷
But we are so friendly! 😃
The problem isn't Canada, honestly, it's the US! But this time it was seamless and I got through in a matter of minutes. Just depends who you get and their attitude that day (that shouldn't matter, but it does where US Border Patrol are concerned)
What is miss priss going for now?
Sold on eBay right away for $35
@@TheAntiqueNomad oh okay thanks!
Crap I'm helping my housemate move so I had to pause. Now I'm two minutes behind the live and I wanted to see that mandolin again. I've seen mandolins go for big bucks... As Wall Hangers 😂
