My first car was a 98 corolla base model, my dad bought it for me when I was 16 in 2002. It had no features at all... I'm talking no power anything, no cruise control, no clock, no intermittent wipers, no takometer, no tilt steering wheel, nothing. However I loved that car, I never had one problem with and I had it through my mid 20s. Sometimes I wish I still had it, I bet it would still be going strong. Thanks for the flashback.
old corollas have simple design. simple is sexy. reliable vehicles. family had a 97 for 13 years (bought used) sold it when it was 15 years old still working in great condition. wish we kept it, if we did it would be my car now.
My grandma gave me her 98 VE with 86k miles. Completely barebones, no clock, manual windows, 3 speed transmission, no tachometer, static rear seats that dont fold down, but i absolutely love it. The only major problems ive had is the timing chain tensioner failing, and of course it burns plenty of oil. Other than that its been amazing.
I had a Corolla of this generation. It is "reliable" in a sense... Suspension wise, and transmission wise with the 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic the car is very good, not many problems there. If you get a 3 speed automatic that's where you'll possibly have transmission problems. The biggest problem you'll have with the car is oil burning that starts around 120k. (Due to poorly designed piston rings). These cars plus the 1999-2002 Celicas are notorious for it... Mine had about 200k miles and burned a quart every fill up (300-350 miles). So if you live in an area that requires emissions testing, I'd recommend staying away from one of these (1998-2001) cause once the burnt oil gets into the catalytic converters, it ruins them. But yeah, if you get a 4 speed automatic or 5 speed manual variant of one of these, you'll be ok as long as you check your oil very frequently, and top it up as needed. If you buy one, make sure it's not knocking in any way when you look at it. Despite the oil burning these things should purr with oil in the crankcase. If it's knocking something is wrong. I never actually did full blown oil changes on my car once it started burning oil so bad, I only replaced the filter every couple thousand miles since I was always putting fresh oil in mine anyways. Fresh filters would always clean the oil right up. I also always mixed 5w30 with 10w40, it helped slow the oil burning by about 50 miles. Great review as usual, thumbs up
I have an 02 and it makes a knocking sound, which I'm told is normal for this engine as it ages (mine only has 100k). Here's a video of the sound it makes and I would really appreciate your opinion: th-cam.com/video/8JTZL8b0vSw/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=SammyT
Yeah I see what you mean, I was given a 1998 Toyota Corolla LE with a 3 speed automatic--- the engine has high mileage ---and it burned oil but only in the mornings when the engine is cold, so instead of using 5w30, I switched over to 10w30 instead and it seemed to have solve the problem; after a few months of driving, I'll check the oil levels and it barely burns not even half a quart. So if anyone is reading this and are in the same situation, try what I did to see if it works for you too..
Gary James Good job, Gary! Low miles. I got mine for free two years ago, it has 154K on it now and I've had recent offers of over $3500. Keep that baby!
+Tropic Smoke it wasn't too much! It was in like new condition! It also hasn't needed any maintainence besides regular oil and transmission fluid change. It's a wonderful little car!
Isn't it 2009? When they introduced the 10th generation Corolla in '09, they downgraded the materials compared to past gens of the Corolla? In 2014, they addressed the issues of the 10th gen Corolla.
Back then, the base model had either a 5 speed manual or a 3 speed auto, if you wanted the 4 speed, you needed to get the LE model and later on, the S model.
My ex neighbor gives me rides to work since we work at the same warehouse and he was going to sell his 98 v6 to some guy for $800. On our way home I told him this was my last week working there since our supervisor (my cousins husband and his cousin lmao) kept telling me for two weeks that Monday I’ll start on this table repairing pallets. 2 weeks straight and I’m like nah no more and told him I’m going to finish this week and leave. But my ex neighbor told me he’ll sell me his car for $500 even in 2 payments of $250. I’m thinking about taking the offer since I drive it everyday. Only thing bad is the the check engine light is on and he says it just turned on one day but everything checked out good. I just need a small car that’s easy to fix for pizza deliveries which is the main reason I’m considering getting it.
Nice review! The '98-'02 model years were wonderful Corollas, although the '94 station wagon was no slouch either. My '98 LE has been in the family since new, although I just got it two years ago. After many preventative maintenances and upgrades costing very little money, I just repainted it three weeks back. What a fantastic car; I love it!
If I remember correctly, only the Corolla LE had the tachometer, so I don't know if you can or not; the letters LE stands for Luxury Edition and it was the highest trim level.
I want to buy 1 of these so bad but scared of it burning oil when it gets in the higher miles. Almost bought 1 here in VA for 2,700. Had 91k on it but passed it up.
Very nice car! I have one just like it but it is blue. I paid 1200$ and it's in almost that condition. On your Corolls, I see the airbag light flashing! This is not very good!
I have one of these right now and I’m looking to sell it. It handles very poorly on the highway. One good gust of wind hits my car and I feel like I’m going to be blown off the road. This car has horrible roll too. You can’t make a sharp turn without feeling like you’re going to flip over.
Good day, I have the same Toyota and its series. I'm in Turkey. I can't find the spare parts. Can you recommend me spare parts dealers in America? Could you give me your phone or e-mail addresses? Thank you.
"Toyota...getting rid of center-consoles???" you really are quite amateur on most of your reviews!! You especially fail at being understanding and objective on older model vehicles. Seriously, Do Better!!!!
This is the most reliable car in the world! I love my Corolla
Phil corollas are lit
I want one hahahahaha
Phil I have same one in RUSSIA! ‘98 120 985 miles. From Hollywood.))) Still workin every day.
Phil that’s trash get your 1 cylinder car out of here my sisters scooter would smoke u
My dad had one that he had from 1998 to 2009 and ended up with 230,000 miles when he sold it.

Sorry Toyota fans but 5.5k for this is outrageous I don't see how anyone in their right mind would spend that much on this
honestly though, 3 years ago and i bet its still on the road. they arent much to look at but youll never have the anxiety of breaking down.
Stephen White very true
Right
mathew senn reliable or not, it’s a corolla and if it doesn’t have 20k original miles, you can’t sell that thing for a dime over 2 grand
I found a dealer selling one with 69k mileage. Too good to be true?

I bought a 98 with 66k miles on it for 4,500 2 years ago.

Gary James was it all original like the radio?
yes
I'm 22 years old and my dad gave me this car! Works just fine.
Most reliable car I've ever owned, just sold mine today sadly but it still has many years left in it.
The bass on the car doors on the car sounded like it had a system in it! I had one back in 2015 and it was awesome!
The base sound system in the car good?
@@tuanroe3525 phenomenal.

The last of the really good Corollas before 2014... love the Ciara intro BTW (:

It's not a key fob. It's a key.
Yeah I was like "wait where is the key fob"
My dad drives a 1998 Toyota Corolla VE everyday now. He got it from my mom, who bought it new back in the days. My mom drives a Jaguar now.
Just picked one up for $1500. Love that it’s a super low-key vehicle.!!95’much to look at, but can take you anywhere
My two favorite toyotas are the AE86 sprinter with the pop headlights, and this one.
This was one of my first cars ever. Low power, endless fun. Thank you Corolla🙏🏻
That was my first car. My cousin sold it to me. I miss that now I drive a 2017 Corolla.
10 months since my last comment.. The old girl is still problem free at 95,567 :-)
Is it still going??
IAm A Toyota Fan Too Cameron And The Corolla Is The Winner
Me too!
same here fuck Honda
I am a Toyota fan too Toyota is awesome
I see this one has the optional side airbags, which was rare for an affordable compact car in the late 90s.
I own a 2000 VE. The coin box is actually an ashtray and I noticed the cigarette lighter in this one is missing
I am about to buy a manual corolla from 00. it is in nice condition is it a good buy for a first car?
Can't go wrong with corolla
This on one I ever owned but never worked on it was brand new!

I have this car and the only real problem I have is that the oil burns, that gets fixed with some new oil every month or so
How many miles is on it?
Love the old Corollas.
Epic music choice! great review!
I love love love love 8th gen’s.
is ir hard to take out the old instrument panel and put it one with a tachometer, I have the exact same car just with no rpm indicator

I don't have a key fob but I have the security light on top of the dash...which I've never been able to activate. I wonder how I do that. It is a LE.
You can activate it by removing the connecting "red" wire on your battery

How much do this cost
I see Corolla's in this body style smoking a lot! Blue and black smoke. I think this generation of the Corolla was very trouble some for Toyota.
Maybe do it bit more research before you just "think" .
this type of car, how much?
Very nice car! I have one just like it but it is blue. I paid 1200$ and it's in almost that condition. On your Corolls, I see the airbag light flashing! This is not very good!
