Well there is a bit more to the distinction of crows and ravens than size. Ravens tent to be larger yes but also have fan shaped tails as opposed to crows that are typically more flat tipped. Ravens are also capable of unpowered flight or gliding/souring at least much more easily than crows which have to use powered flight to stay airborne. That is crows have more trouble flying if they arent also flapping. Relative beak size, throat plumage. Very similar birds but distinct. More or less differences depending on the specific corvid species
All I can say is that i never knew there was a distinction because I'm my mother tongue, spanish, both words are translated to Cuervo, until now i thinked it was just different interchangable ways to say it.
I think JKR was using Corvus as a mode of identifying the species rather than indicating "crow" and "raven" as interchangeable words. It would be somewhat similar to naming someone "Blackbird: and then having any number of black bird to describe such a name.
Yeah, I definitely cringed when he read off that bad information. There are several more distinctions between the species. That's why they ARE different species. Otherwise they wouldn't be.
It's interesting how Bellatrix differs from her sisters and marries for status and wealth rather than love while they marry for love and are happier. True Andromeda is cast out for marrying a Muggle born and Narcissa marries a Death Eater, but they are still happy with their choices while Bellatrix is in a loveless marriage and pines for Lord Voldemort, a man who can't love
Didn't her father force to her to get married on threat of disownment as her antics and decent into psychosis was bringing shame to "The Most Ancient and Noble House of Black".
@@harryjester282 It’s possible considering their family’s obsession with blood purity but I think she also felt obligated to follow her family’s example. As an adult we do see her fixation and dedication with and to blood purity and power. It might have resulted from her upbringing but I think she chose her path
I read somewhere, and I'm sure it was canon material, that Bellatrix married Rodolphus because she was supposed to. Not for wealth or power, but to make the pure-blood marriage that was required of her. They didn't hate each other, they were a good team and good friends but that's all it ever was. She was probably expected to have children to further the blood line but who knows why she didn't. Maybe she had fertility issues or maybe her a Rodolphus never consummated their marriage. Maybe they were just too busy serving Voldemort to get pregnant, then they both got thrown in Azkaban. Who knows.
Wasn't the Lestrange family said to be very old and powerful? And that explains them having a vault so deep inside gringots. If this theory is true, that would probably make the Lestrange family one the youngest of all the pure-blood families. Just 300-400 yr old. The Malfoy family goes back almost a 1000 yrs. I had high hopes from the Lestrange family. Thought they would go back 1000s of years, which would explain why every Lestrange is filthy rich.
I'm not sure the "oldness" of a family is more than a simple pissing contest. Wizards with knowledge of the Muggle world have an insane potential of gain huge fortunes. Something the founders of the Lestrange family certainly would have, based on this theory. Just like the Malfoys gained a lot in the past by hanging around Muggles. Not to mention, proving them wrong once their name was established, would be pretty hard.
You're right. I'm sorry but these guys are WAY off on this one. The magical world would have been recording their lineage which is why they made the Sacred 28. No upstarts that just decalred that they were "{iure Bloods' would have made the list. No, the answer is simple, Rowling didn't feel it was necessary to go back further than Corvus/Cyril. Just look at the Black family tree and others. They don't strecth back that far. The sad part is how these guys are just GUESSING and grasping at straws sometimes, but their audience members take it as FACT, when it's just entertainment.
They’re newer in England. They’re originally from France (that have a massive vault in Paris) bellatrix’ vault is from the blacks not the Lestranges. She’s only a Lestrange by marriage.
@@AshBash1824 No the vault we see in the 7th movie, the one guarded by a Dragon is actually a Lestrange Vault, because before being Bellatrix’s vault, it was her husband’s vault, Rodolphus Lestrange
Hi. May I add something to the theory? “Lestrange” as a last name has as possible etymology in “les etrangers”, that means “the foreigners” in french. As the misterious family nobody really knew nothing about and came overseas.
Just as a side note: The name is pronounced "le-strange" as in "strange", and there is nothing French about it any longer. The name Lestrange has been in Britain since the time of the Norman Conquest (1066). If it were modern French, it would be Létrange. The middle -s- has not been written since the 16th century in France and had not been pronounced for even longer, but the -s- remained in the English name.
Very good point, however seeing as the authoress is of British decent she would use the British spelling. Although she is so good at researching her work....still things are about to slip through.
@@maryjoyspohrer256 Could have also been an US government citizen official butchering the name and they stuck with it. That's how you get a bunch of different spellings of last names here in the US. People who would take names from immigrants and those who spoke different languages for registration of legal documents would often misspell names; or even someone trying to get away from their family might change it slightly or entirely.
Game of thrones has really fizzeled out due to the poor last seasons. Emergency awesome did/does awesome marvel/dc/rick and morty/game of thrones videos so i would reconmend him
The family tree in the second Fantastic Beasts movie could be just that section of the Lestrange family that resides in France there could be another family tree that's out in Europe somewhere that has different and more people.
The biggest flaw with this theory is that "estranged", translated to French, is "éloingé". If they were going to Frankify their name, they more likely would have picked Leloinge, or something similar.
I was thinking that too. Same goes for the canon etymology of it being “le strange,” when strange in French is “etrange”. One way it could work though, would be if they took up Estrange as the last name while in the Americas. Then when they went back to France, or interacting with the French in the Americas, were referenced to as a family as “the Estranges” -> la famille Estrange / L’Estranges. The latter grammatically is incorrect, I think, but I’ve seen more odd etymology sequences
@@if0nly étrange was spelt "estrange" before in French :) the "es" often became an E with an accent (é, è or ê) so "L'estrange" means l'étrange or l'étranger in today's French, the weird/odd or the stranger/foreigner. Both could work in that case.
@OriginalIPMan You meant "éloigné", I guess... because "éloingé" doesn't exist in French. And no, it doesn't mean "estranged". The term you picked is only used in a sense that comes close to estrangement when used in verbal form. As in "s'éloigner de sa famille ". When people become estranged from one another the wording used would be something like "ils sont comme des étrangers à présent " or "ils se comportent comme des étrangers ".

Hey Brothers, always great to hear your theories. This theory of Dumbledore's half-brother turning into a phoenix has a hole. Kendra is not a Dumbledore. She is a muggle-born who marries Dumbledore's father. Therefore, a son of Kendra with Corvus would not have Dumbledore's blood. I like the homunculus theory better!!!
So we're throwing Heir of Slytherin at every character now? You are a heir of Slythrin! You too can be a heir of Slytherin! Everyone is a heir of Slytherin!

Just a little FYI from a retired teacher: the French & Indian War wasn't fought by Americans. It was between the French and the English and ran from 1754 to 1763. The Revolution didn't start til 1775. The French were outnumbered by the English and not Americans.
@@lukaseldenrust2637 the French did help us Americans during the Revolution. If not for the French navy, the Revolution could've dragged on for several more years.
Also, the French and Indian War is a part of an even larger Euro-Indian conflict known as the Seven Years War, and France had her hands full with that as well.
This! Plenty of wealthy families in the UK today can still have their lineage (and wealth) traced back to the Norman conquest. Royal families can get into the Saxon period if I remember correctly. I can't imagine the same would not be true in the wizarding world.
Also the huge glaring hole is leta was pulling her volume from a huge book case, one that came her way when she said her last name. So there were other volumes, we didn't see the inside of them.

Just like how the t in Voldemort is supposed to be silent because it’s french (and is said that way in the audiobooks), but they added the t on in the movies.
Aurelias is Latin and seems to mean golden, there is a flower named after it, which is bright golden yellow. Dumbledore is an old English name for bumblebee, which is also yellow with black stripes.

You have to check sources. The HP wiki includes junk made up for the LEGO games, the mobile games, and all kinds of other nonsense and doesn't mark it well nor keep it separate.
The thought that any credit to the lestrange family almost reinforces Voldemort having a daughter with bellatrix in Cursed Child sort of shakes my bones.

I really like how this theory sounds! But I’m still unsure about the parseltongue heritance thing. If the ability jumps the only other magical child of Isolt Syre because she is a squib, how do we know how it passes on. For all we know it could be in the blood…just activated by the magical ability. So therefore I would say all the magical Lestranges could or should be able to speak parseltongue, but they don’t. I mean yes your theory would explain the lack of the ability, but we need more information of the inheritance of the ability to say for sure.
So based on this idea is it possible that the Lestrange's and Kendra are connected since she has been described as having native American descendant features?
You’re looking for a significant historical magical event close to 1729 and the founding of Ilvermorny in 1627 is close to you?? That’s 102 year difference.

If you have a look at some of the characters wands and see what they are made of then you look at the description of the wand woods and cores. Doesn’t it make you question why that wand chose that specific witch or wizard or in simpler terms did the wand choose the right witch or wizard and is there another wand that is an even better pair for that witch or wizard
Umm. There definitely are physical differences between Crows and Ravens other than their size. They're of the same genus, but not the same species. It's like saying that zebra's and horses are the same thing. Their wing feathers are different, their tails are different, their neck feathers are different, their beaks and beak feathers are different. They make vastly different noises. Crows are generally found in large packs while Ravens are typically only found in packs of 3-4.
I would love to see your guys take on the concept of Harry Potter characters as Greek mythological figures and who would be who based off attributes. Don’t know if you guys would dig that but I just wanted to put it out in the universe!
The Lestrange Family crest is a crow, which is also a raven, because their ancestor can turn into one. The Ravenclaw mascot is an eagle, which is also a… bird… because… ducks go in cups! Nailed it! 😂
Interesting theory. Perhaps when the Fantastic Beasts movies finish we'll know more. I've thought the LeStrange Family came from France possibly with the Malfoys and William the Conquerer. They seem more varied. Leta is very different from Rodolphus. Many of them were darker than the Malfoys.
Love this theory, you guys killed it as usual. I’m worried that none of the plots in the fantastic beast movies will come close to this kind of deep cut fan lore
I have another video idea that goes with all this "Heir of Slytherin" stuff. How did the Slytherin line (Gaunts) make their gold? Dumbledore said they had once been wealthy until they squandered it. Did they inherit money or did their use their parseltongue gift to sell snake parts(scales, venom/antivenom, fangs) for profit? Must be easy to get your hands on that stuff if you can speak to snakes.
I decided to look up a timeline of happengs IRL that could be a reason for the info before that time. I kid you not 1729 - 1735 Charles Wesley and John Wesley (one letter off but close enough for a Dyslexic) began the Methodism movement in England. While it's got nothing to do with the fictional Wesley's from the pottervers it's such an odd connection when I'm looking up stuff that could have effected the wizarding world in that year.
Going further back to the 12th and 13th Century, you can find a Lestrange beheading, in battle, the Last King of Wales, a Llwellyn...whom you might remember from a Ward in St Mungo's... The circumstances in history, and stories/legends from then, about Llwellyn and Lestrange, hint at wizardry. Llwellyn is in my family line, thus my study. Was very shocked to see Lestrange impacting my family history. Lestrange ended the Royalty of Wales.
This does tie in with the Acadian geneaology very well. During the expulsion of the Acadians by the British many Acadians moved into the woods and lived amongst the Mik'mak. The Acadians were French settlers and there is a list of the first familieis that read awfully similiar to the list of 28. And yeah that timing is pretty much right on.
Wow. I love this, it actually makes a lot of sense. Mary Barebones being a squib tells us so much about her hatred of magical people as a form of jealousy and envy. And even thought I *twitch* every time you say LeStrahnge instead of LeStrange, it really fits with the history. I'd investigate it further, but my Hogwarts (or in my case, Ilvermorny) letter never came. I'll have to subscribe to the at-home correspondence course from Madam McWitchy's School for Old Squibs to get up to speed. 🤔

Yeah, birds adapt at a higher rate than most animals.
I think JKR was using Corvus as a mode of identifying the species rather than indicating "crow" and "raven" as interchangeable words. It would be somewhat similar to naming someone "Blackbird: and then having any number of black bird to describe such a name.
Ravens also have different vocalizations than crows, and also have larger, more hooked beaks than crows do.
@@harryjester282 that's part of a fan-film, but as far as we know it might even be true.

This is what I thought the entire time it's le strange.

CoG is one of my favourite films in the HP universe. It is very convuluted, but the vibe of the film is so cool. I think alot of people forget that it's part 2 in a 5 part series. It's not gonna be a great standalone or have a difinitive beginning, middle and end.
My thoughts, exactly.
It’s the disappoint of of expectations - mostly validated by the deleted scenes
“HEEEYYYYY BROTHERRRRR!!!” said Ben calmly.

Thank you! I was getting really confused but chalked it up to - I’m not American so I’m probably getting it mixed up.

The thing is that they wouldn't be declared as one of the aincent pureblood family without knowing the line that far back

And especially if this theory is true, they would pronounce it as Le-Strange, not Le-Stron-j, as they are really American and not French.
If you listen to the audiobooks read by Jim Dale, he pronounces Lestrange the way that Jay does. It’s very weird to hear after watching the movies so often where they pronounce Lestrange differently.
The Barebones were originally a wizarding family who actively bred out their magic.

Man, I love how y'all research!
I so hope that JKR is sitting somewhere with a tiny notebook to write all this down, because this theory is just amazing!

I kid you not
1729 - 1735 Charles Wesley and John Wesley (one letter off but close enough for a Dyslexic) began the Methodism movement in England.

You guys did some DIGGING for this one!

Quick look to the Lestrange family tree. Question: Why do these people all die so early? These ages seem very short for a wizard
Probably cause of the wars (grindelwald's war, first and second wizarding war) an seven before/after this probably cause the wizarding world is very dangerous like dragons and other dangerous magiacal animals and a lot dangerous spells you can hitten with and dangerous objects that can kill you
Maybe because of inbreeding. It seems to be a tradition between other pureblood families such as the Blacks.
@supercarlinbrothers you should do a video on the genetics of parseltongue or genetics of magical genes like the great Preston Jacobs did for genetics of dragon genes
