I don't know about "totally restored," but it had been painted twice when this was filmed, and had two engine rebuilds, one necessary and one not. He had his third rebuild right after this was filmed. Two of those rebuilds were because Irv insisted on using modern Castrol GTX oil, which has really low zinc content compared to old Castrol, and is a necessary antiwear compound for older engines. Once he started using zinc additive (Shell X-100) he was fine. Volvo bought the car after his death and "refreshed" the paint, which was a way for them to not say they repainted it, but it was a third repaint. The car has never had a frame-off restoration. He had the front seats reupholstered once and the driver's side has been repaired several times (Irv was a big guy, and that seat could only take so much). The backseat was still original. I would say that all of the interior chrome was original, but the exterior had been rechromed twice. The second was done to correct the poor plating done on the original rechrome. Irv stopped taking it to the Volvo dealer for service after they recommended the first guy, who did a terrible job. He felt Volvo should compensate him for having to have it done twice, and they told him to go f*** himself, so he never went back.

The entire nose of the vehicle was smashed in. At the time an owner of a 1972 P1800E myself, I was interested of course in who owned the car. I was told it was Irv Gordon of Patchogue. I was told that he smashed it up on his commute to work. At the time, the car had some unheard of amount of mileage on it, and I remembered a news article about the car and Irv having gone over (I believe) the 500,000 mile mark without any major mechanical work being done on the engine. I asked the mechanics that I worked along side with at Volvoville at the time how that could be. They told me it wasn't entirely true, that in point of fact they re-ringed it. Still that was fairly impressive and I knew from experience that if a B18 engine (which this year P1800 had) was well maintained, one could replace the rings with stock rings, but well before 300K miles. Having torn apart and rebuilt many, many B18 and B20 engines, there is no way one of those engines, particularly where they were carbureted and not fuel injected, could go that far simply because he changed the oil every 3,000 miles. I got to meet Irv when he picked the car up and he was a very proud owner indeed, just a little prone to hyperbole. Volvoville went along with his weaving of the story, not disclosing the engine rebuild work it did on his car. It is great that he did take such good care of his sweet little P1800. Mine got totaled when an inebriated driver pulled out into the middle of traffic from Good Samaritan hospital parking lot and t-boned me. That was a very sad day on the planet as the car had been totally restored just the summer before. RIP Irv.
3,200,000+ miles in 52 years works out to 169 miles per day, which is about three hours of seat time at an average of 55mph. I would imagine that he had a quality audio system in it. God bless you, Irv.

Add various electronic features to it overtime but keep all the older parts lying around so you could at least have a backup when the dispossable electronics will start breaking.
FYI, you need a $1500+ scan tool to do a brake job on newer cars due to the electronic parking brake. The caliper has to be in “service mode” and no basic scam tool can do this. Nor is there a in car procedure for this. You think computers are still “reliable”?
I bought my 1970 Volvo wagon in 1993 and still drive it today. I've had it now for 25 years and have driven it to Alaska and back. People said that the car would not make it back home to central Texas, but it did with no problems.
I had a 67’ model about 40 years ago from 1982-1984. A financial analyst buddy of my roommate came down from Manhattan to visit, and long story short convinced me to sell the P1800S in favor of all the jewelry equipment I needed to do casting work. It was so hard to part with the car; it was my favorite car ever. But Ted the analyst was right, because over 40 years later I am still making money with the same casting equipment. Nevertheless, the great news is that I found a 72 1800E last year which needed to be put back together from being painted. It’s now on the road, and I can’t stop driving it! I almost forgot how great it is to drive this car- I have a case of Irv Gordon-itis now. God Bless

There is a couple who live here in Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu. They have two volvos. The p1800 red, & a blue 4 door. They purchased them in the mid 1970's . I saw them both going somewhere in the early morning last year, 2018. Both the cars where still running. In 2013 I once asked them how many miles they had. I believe he said the 2 door had over a half million & the other was nearing 800k. They are just a couple of hippies from Cali.

I love that this man enjoyed his car to the fullest. I love my cars, too, and want to enjoy them permanently as well. That said, it must be noted that he did have his engine rebuilt twice, so please do not think that millions of miles is possible on the original engine, via simply changing the oil regularly. The first rebuild, though, at 680,000 miles was DAMNED impressive. That also should be a lesson to us all.
2:34 interesting to see Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres on Irv's car. A Dutch tyre, manufactured in The Netherlands, my country. This exact tread pattern was used in the eighties and it was called Sprint+ back then.
I use to see Irv driving the car on the highway and I also seen him a few times with it at the Oakdale car show. He was such a nice person to talk to. I remember the first time I met him we talked about the Volvo and other cars for hours. What a nice man. He will be missed. He use to be at the local deli in Bellport in the morning having breakfast. He also had a 1929 Packard which my friend owns now.

A few days ago when Irv passed away, there was an article that claimed he has driven 3.2M miles in this car. Why does this video claim 4M? (0:19) . Let's assume 3.2M. He bought the car in 1966, and drove it thru 2018. That's 52 years, or about 19000 days. That's 168 miles average per day. Assuming he averaged 50mph when he drove, that's 3.37 hours in the car every day.
That car is awesome what great memories he had with it! Every now and then I bring up this car for the one that has the most recorded miles on it. Great conversations!!
What is amazing is not just how many miles were driven without repairs, but that nobody ever ran into it. There was a Prius locally that hit 500,000 with normal maintenance and it only stopped when someone rear-ended it.
At least Irv didn't fall in love with a dud of a car--sure would suck to drive 3 million miles in a Pinto!!! That P1800 is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!! Great taste Irv, great taste.
One of my favorite cars. My dad had one and I wanted to take it to my prom. Unfortunately, he sold it before my senior year. I've always thought the P1800 would look great with aluminum slot mags and white letter tires.

This p1800 models are highly priced today. Start with USD $10.000 for a nice one. But for your attention I can recommend The Volvo Amazon 57-70, It has the same drive line and same rear axel and supension. Prices are rising because a good one, well kept specimen, is the best investment you can do. Especially here i Sweden where cars this age are free of roadtaxes and mandatory car inspection. But you have to care and overhaul yourself. Then it´s both rugged design and easy maintainability. Just look at the engine bay! I have TWO Amazons and I think these will outlive me as well. They have character. Lots of it
I lol at people that think the car didn't rust etc. He didn't neglect anything. If he couldn't fix something he had it professionally repaired immediately. 1-2 minor fender benders etc. Never neglected, it was his baby. Rip Mr. Gordon
For Irv, someone better get in the drivers seat of that Volvo! Mercedes is gaining in the rearview mirror of that milage record. Mercedes is a PR powerhouse. They will put their marketing prowess behind their car so you will think they had that longevity record all long! Mercedes loves stuff like that....
I think that same 1966 Volvo P1800S engine is great swapping in a 1963 VW Bug or Beetle. Even Fonzie's 1949 Triumph motorcycle loves to have that kind of Volvo engine lasting greater than four million miles. Who could ask for anything more?

No computer no stupid sensors. Easy to fix with basic tools. Just change the fluids and dont thrash it from cold and all is well.

i know how the record works, & know Volvo have supported Irv (including giving him a C70) so no doubt that would continue if they did wish to carry on. Irv bought the car, drove & maintained the car, the car was him. Let them both rest now

This p1800 models are highly priced today. Start with USD $10.000 for a nice one. But for your attention I can recommend The Volvo Amazon 57-70, It has the same drive line and same rear axel and supension. Prices are rising because a good one, well kept specimen, is the best investment you can do. Especially here i Sweden where cars this age are free of roadtaxes and mandatory car inspection. But you have to care and overhaul yourself. Then it´s both rugged design and easy maintainability. Just look at the engine bay!

I lol at people that think the car didn't rust etc. He didn't neglect anything. If he couldn't fix something he had it professionally repaired immediately. 1-2 minor fender benders etc. Never neglected, it was his baby. Rip Mr. Gordon

I don't know where 4 million miles came from, but Irv only drove 3.25 million miles in the P1800. Not 4 million miles.

I think that same 1966 Volvo P1800S engine is great swapping in a 1963 VW Bug or Beetle. Even Fonzie's 1949 Triumph motorcycle loves to have that kind of Volvo engine lasting greater than four million miles. Who could ask for anything more?
