Around a year or so ago my local Audubon society took a trip to Tall Timbers just outside of Tallahassee to see red cockaded woodpeckers, and we also went to St. Marks to see Pinky. It was a great weekend of birding, and I got to see my first nuthatches as well.
St. Marks is a really cool place to bird.

I remember reading about Pinky a few years ago. It's kind of nice (but kind of sad as he's probably lonely) that he's still around. Great vid as always!

Cool. When I was a kid I went all over a couple of marshes with a teacher who was an outdoorsman looking for Least bittern. I had a very good pair of Swifts and they got wrecked when I fell in the marsh looking for that bird. Fortunately we saw him at Pratt Laje outside Lowell Michigan. A lifer that required some sacrifice lol

While birding in central Florida in January, 2019 I made the four hour drive up to St. Marks NWR to see Pinky. Truly one of the highlights of my birding life.

Haha, true. Patrick was moving to Seattle a month or two from when we shot this video and he wanted to do as much stuff as possible in the south before moving. Seeing Pinky was on the list. We were also able to go scuba diving in Pensacola, FL.
I’ve been wanting to get down to St. Mark’s for some herping and birding. I’ve heard so many great things. Nice video!

Wow, thanks so much! I guess I got so used to seeing flamingos in Northeast zoos that I forgot they can live in the wild. It's wonderful that Pinky has adapted to his/her new environment. Along those lines, I was traveling via NY Old Route 100 the other day and was delighted to discover a whole bunch of huge, gorgeous wild swans majestically plying the lakes there. I had never seen them outside zoos either! I really appreciate your work, thanks. :)
That's cool! I would love to see a flamingo, especially since they used to be my favorite bird.
They are so cool. And the "used to" seems kind of ominous. Did you and the Flamingos have a falling out? Haha
@@BadgerlandBirding Haha! I still like them, but my favorite bird has changed over the years, especially after I got into birding. When they were my favorite bird, almost every gift I got had to do with flamingos, so as you can imagine, I got quite sick of them for a while. I guess I just prefer to see the ones in the wild than having my room full of "fake" flamingos. :D

So I found out a couple years ago that we actually have a very few Least Bitterns here in Nor Cal. But they are rarely seen and almost never photographed. Then on my trip to South Padre Island April of this year, I got some really good Least Bittern shots 🙂 Now I just want to get a Least 8 miles from my house instead of 2100 🙂 lol
love your videos. Have you heard of the African flamingo Pink Floyd that escaped from the zoo in Kansas? I spotted him(video I took is on my channel) this time last year around Port Lavaca, Texas. I did interviews with over a dozen new agencies all over the country. It would be pretty cool if you drove down and spotted him. I'll let you know if I see him this year... I can give you the specific location, but you'd probably need a boat to get there if he's in the same area.

Never seen a Thunder Pumper. Hoping to get that one eventually. Never been to Sax Bog but I did go to Thief River with Dad and went to the Agassiz Marsh and found all kinds of grebes and yellow headed blackbirds and also a Chat. Hope to meet you guys one day and that you’ll bird the Mitten State one day

I do not. But I do appreciate getting to see species I wouldn’t be able to otherwise see in captivity. For example the Milwaukee County Zoo has a Guam Kingfisher.
What a lovely trip - smart of you to be down here in the fall, too. I don't live in Florida but St Mark's is still considered "my neck of the woods" - according to a friend of mine at least, haha. Maybe I'll convince her to go with me to experience it!
I will admit though, I started cracking up when you mentioned the lovebugs. As I'm sure you got told already, most of us who live in the South get QUITE exasperated about them!
I took a quick look and did not see it mentioned, but did you happen to consider the MS Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge? (It's the closest wildlife refuge to where I live, the only one I've visited, too)

Veru odd coincidence on those bugs as we have a species of Bibionidae that we call the St Mark's Fly that is very similar and obv in the same genus
