I've been watching all your motor videos lately as you get ready to restore the Century--TH-cam suggested your channel after I binge-watched ALL of Terry Benco's expert motor restoration videos to build enough confidence to attempt my own resto. Plus, he has some great vice videos, so I've been watching these on your channel as well. I have, sadly, realized during my own Walker -Turner restoration that I do not have a quality vice, but I don't want to buy one new... I'd much rather find something like one of these quality old vices you showcase and restore. This Parker is a beauty! You know, it is something to have quality machines and or tools to pass on, and I hope one day to have a collection to pass on to my own kids. I'm starting from scratch, and I totally appreciate your educational, nostalgic content! 💯
I have the same Parker 974 vise that I've been using for over 50 years. Mine came out of navy surplus, was battleship gray and buried in cosmoline when I got it. Doesn't look that pretty but it's a great working vise. Beautiful restoration!

Great job on restoration. Bellanca was an aircraft manufacturer. Some beautiful aircraft came out of that company. Love restoring old tools and preserving some history.

My 974 looks like it was a battleship gray color and it has a round steel snap ring where you had installed the o-ring. Fantastic results at the completion of your project!

Hi Brian- I was amazed to find out how many quality tools were made in Connecticut! Recently I picked up some tooling from a company called "New Britain" and they are really well made! Connecticut was second to none when it came to making quality tools. I would love to see manufacturing like that come back to the United States once again... Thanks for checking in! 😃👍
Very well done. Made me want to refurbish my 6" Maple Leaf Vises (Canadian Made). I rescued it with a bent lead screw 25 years ago. It is a work vise, not a showpiece. A non swivel type which I feel are stronger.
Hi Gord, I agree about the fixed base vises being stronger... It kills me to see people abuse a vise, it's like seeing a guy use a wrench as a hammer or a screwdriver as a prybar... Those old vises were so strong that you would really have to go nuts to wreck them but people did... I think machinists have the most respect for their tools, they never beat on them... I found the same exact vise in an old abandoned school wood shop class. I restored it but I kept it as a metal finish. It was really messed up rusted beyond belief. It took me a while but I love my vise. I was lucky cause I was in the market for a good vise but couldn't find anything I liked. And then we locked eyes. Lol, it's as if it was in the cards that I found that vise.

That's great!! Also new Britain is a town in Ct...Stanley had a plant there for years and a lot of other great tools came from new Britain ct also!! It's about 20 min outside Hartford! Great town w a lot of proud polish heritage 👍🏻👍🏻

I love that bench grinder setup too. I need a wheel like that one! Going to try and rig up that Doerr motor I recently got. It's only a third horsepower but it is huge and I'm hoping it has some juice!
I reaaly like that color red with the white. I just scored an old Columbian 3.5" from a pawn shop for $18. It looks like it was never even mounted but the paints all chipped off. I think im going to have to do this!
Ever hear of an Crusader vise? Found one for sale. Looks good shape. Has anvil etc. but can’t find anything about it. It’s a bench top vise. Has the little side wrench like the Parker.
Awesome job as usual! No complains about the color I grew up using craftsman tools. I’m restoring my great grandfathers vise the only writing is no. 100. None swivel base. My question is the nut that the acme screw runs through is held in with a small pin and I can’t seem to loosen it! This old thing has the tension pins also! Love the channel keep it up.
Nice job I just started redoing vises when I do one I sell it just to buy a bigger one My next one is a Reed 208 almost 300 pounds mounted on a 400 pound base I cant wait to start but I have to finish the honey do list first lol

I have a collection of Vises and the heaviest I have is about 150 Lbs. I hope to find an 8 inch some day. I think the Reed Vise are some of the nicest Vises that were made.
I guess I need to clean up my 110 lb C. Parker 288 1/2. But I don't think I will even try to "restore it". It was in a small shop since WWII and you can see the hands of the owner in all the scars. I will have to come up with one HEAVY duty stand ;-)

Your vice is vices right? I found an old parker #975 vice in a garage of an abandoned house and it's gray like what you found under the tag, FYI. Nice job restoring it. I'm planning to use mine just the way I got it with all the patina. I see everyone advertising these as made in 1930 but on mine it says Pat. 1930, wouldn't that mean that it was patented not necessarily built in 1930?
Always enjoy your restorations. I have 2 vintage Craftsman 3-1/2 inch Vises Models 5242 that had been used a lot and I use regularly but need some attention. Since I have seen your videos I have some idea as to how to go about it. One is from my father and the other from my father in law. I was wondering if you would have any information about when and where they might have been made and what the original colors may have been? Since I was born in 1946, it had to be before then. Also one has pipe jaws riding on the jack screw and one does not. Were pipe jaws an added purchase or were they lost from the one? Always look forward to your new videos.
Hello William, I am far from an expert on Craftsman vises but You are right that some of the early Pipe vise attachments were often lost, I have often seen vises missing one pipe jaw. The colors varied as did the manufacturers, Craftsman had more then one manufacturers making their vises and often colors varied.. I am restoring a #473 I/2 Chas. Parker vise, Pat. 1938 or 9. It is the model that will rotate on both horizontal and vertical axis. Needs Jaws. Do you have any info on this model? I believe on the 974, there is a part missing that holds the screw anchor in place. A small casting dovetailed each side with retaining bolt from underside. Yours appears to have a bent over pin.
Nice work. I would liked to have seen the fitting of the nut in the dovetail. Does the nut have any play or does it fit tight in the dovetail? I looked at a Parker and the nut was very loose with side play.
Hi Emilio, I am always concerned about having my videos run too long so I have to leave out some details like that. This particular draw nut was snug but I have seen them both tight and loose, either way there has to be some "slop" in the mechanism or it binds. Since it only draws the jaws together it doesn't effect the rigidity or tolerance of the vise overall. Hope that helps.. Thanks- 😃👍
Thanks. I was worried about too much corrosion in the dovetail slot. I don't want a vise that needs that much rehab. , especially for the money some people want for these old vises.
Quite often people say "Good for another 100 years" when they see a restoration, whether it’s true or not. This one is definitely good for another 100 years. Please may I ask if you’ve restored it for use or restored it for preservation? I know neither is exclusive of the other, I'm just nosey.

Just bought a 974 on OfferUp, inspired by your restoration, and want to spray it the same color. Is it a Rust-Oleum color and did you use a clear coat? Thank you in advance for your answer. Fantastic job.
Emilio it's important to use a punch that is just a hair smaller then the pins, this way they don't mushroom. I used a couple different punches. Eventually you will need a long punch to drive the pins out. You have to drive the pins out from underneath so the pins come out the top of the jaws. Only remove the jaws if absolutely necessary, I just got another vise last week that has no cuts on the jaws so I'm leaving them attached for the restoration, I will polish them on the vise! 😃👍
Emilio the reason I used differs punches is because the shorter the punch the less likely it will bend. Clearance isn't an issue because the vise is apart and you will flip each half over to work on it. One other note- If you do decide to remove the pins mark each pin's location and top/bottom of pin so you can put them back exactly where they came from...
You take a too any tool and turn them into conversation pieces I have two vices that could use attention but there are used frequently and it just not practical.I’d like to send you a pic of both of possible and get your input. Keep em coming !!!!
Hi Emilio - to get the jaws off you need to use a long punch and drive the pins out from the "inside out" they can be a real pain because they are a really good fit and over time become frozen. That was the hardest part of the job! Thanks for watching! 😃👍
Hi ScoutCrafter. I found a spray color I like but its an art spray made of acrylic. Is this an good type of paint for a vise and what would be the best primer? I wish Krylon or Rustoleum made more colors. Your videos are an inspiration, keep up the great work!😀👍
Hello Steve! I have never had good luck with acrylic.. It goes on easy, cleans up easy... And unfortunately comes off easy! For the vise you need oil base! Did you try a auto part store like Pep boys or Auto Zone... They sell automotive spray paint that has more color choices! My favorite is Rustoleum, if you visit a big Home Depot or Lowes they have more Rustoleum colors then other stores!!!
Thanks ScoutCrafter. The color I was hoping for is Valspar Fish Story but can't find it in spray or quart sized oil based enamel. Next choices are Duplicolor Engine enamel ceramic Ford Green or go all out for Metallic Burnt Orange. Decisions Decisions! Also, did you paint the inside of the base components? Hi ScoutCraft. I was hoping you could lend me some of your great advice again. I'm starting my vise project and wondering how you treat the inside of the stationary housing and inside of the base. Mine isn't as open as your Parker. Mine has a cast bevel gear and some hard to reach places. I used vinegar to clean it but let it sit too long and now has flash rust. Should I soak it again in vinegar or evaporust, then soak in baking soda and wire brush again? Also, is primer paint better for a vise or shellac, one or two coats? Lastly, lithium grease for the base? Grease/SAE30 mix for Acme screw, jaw slide and runners? And anti-seize for the base & jaw screws. Thank you for any help you can give. Love the videos and I'm learning a lot. Gonna mix some erls today. Lol
My mom was just gifted a vise. It happens to be the same one you are using here. We are just wondering what does the wrench tighten? Hers came with the wrench she was just unsure as to what it does. Any info you can offer would be great. Thank yiu
Hi Michelle! What a awesome gift she received! =) The wrench just allows the vise to swivel on the base that is bolted down to the bench. If you loosen it you can turn the vise left and right, tighten it up and the vise is locked in that position! Hope that helps! =)
Hey Brian, There was a guy making jaws for certain Parker vises but they weren't cheap... I think in the area of $185! 😳. Unfortunately these jaws are machined differently so they aren't easy to duplicate like other vises. I would try very hard to fix the jaws you have. I have seen guys weld a bead or two across the damaged areas and grind them down... the results were nice! If just the top corners and edges are screwed up that might be an economical option for you! 😃👍
Hi Bruce, the best place to find these vises are at Steam engine shows where they have a flea market, also Ebay always has a nice selection but you will pay an extra $50+ for shipping, however when you think about this as a lifetime purchase what's a few extra dollars? Thanks for watching! 😃👍
I recently found an old 4 inch craftsman vise from the 40s at my local Habitat for Humanity Restore. They tend to get left over tools and stuff from estate sales. I've also heard of people getting stuff from scrap yards.

Nice job I just started redoing vises when I do one I sell it just to buy a bigger one My next one is a Reed 208 almost 300 pounds mounted on a 400 pound base I cant wait to start but I have to finish the honey do list first lol
It's amazing how big they made some of these vises! When they get into the 200# range they are a bear to handle!

I have a collection of Vises and the heaviest I have is about 150 Lbs. I hope to find an 8 inch some day. I think the Reed Vise are some of the nicest Vises that were made.
I guess I need to clean up my 110 lb C. Parker 288 1/2. But I don't think I will even try to "restore it". It was in a small shop since WWII and you can see the hands of the owner in all the scars. I will have to come up with one HEAVY duty stand ;-)
Hello Tim! I've restored quite a few vises and I have to tell you Parker's are among the nicest vises you can own! That 110lb beauty you have is quite a find... File the lettering down ever so slightly to create a flatter surface and sharper edges. Detailing the lettering becomes that much easier and sharper.

Your vice is vices right? I found an old parker #975 vice in a garage of an abandoned house and it's gray like what you found under the tag, FYI. Nice job restoring it. I'm planning to use mine just the way I got it with all the patina. I see everyone advertising these as made in 1930 but on mine it says Pat. 1930, wouldn't that mean that it was patented not necessarily built in 1930?

Always enjoy your restorations. I have 2 vintage Craftsman 3-1/2 inch Vises Models 5242 that had been used a lot and I use regularly but need some attention. Since I have seen your videos I have some idea as to how to go about it. One is from my father and the other from my father in law. I was wondering if you would have any information about when and where they might have been made and what the original colors may have been? Since I was born in 1946, it had to be before then. Also one has pipe jaws riding on the jack screw and one does not. Were pipe jaws an added purchase or were they lost from the one? Always look forward to your new videos.
Hello William, I am far from an expert on Craftsman vises but You are right that some of the early Pipe vise attachments were often lost, I have often seen vises missing one pipe jaw. The colors varied as did the manufacturers, Craftsman had more then one manufacturers making their vises and often colors varied.. I am restoring a #473 I/2 Chas. Parker vise, Pat. 1938 or 9. It is the model that will rotate on both horizontal and vertical axis. Needs Jaws.
Do you have any info on this model? I believe on the 974, there is a part missing that holds the screw anchor in place.
A small casting dovetailed each side with retaining bolt from underside. Yours appears to have a bent over pin.

Nice work. I would liked to have seen the fitting of the nut in the dovetail. Does the nut have any play or does it fit tight in the dovetail? I looked at a Parker and the nut was very loose with side play.
Hi Emilio, I am always concerned about having my videos run too long so I have to leave out some details like that. This particular draw nut was snug but I have seen them both tight and loose, either way there has to be some "slop" in the mechanism or it binds. Since it only draws the jaws together it doesn't effect the rigidity or tolerance of the vise overall. Hope that helps.. Thanks- 😃👍
Thanks. I was worried about too much corrosion in the dovetail slot. I don't want a vise that needs that much rehab. , especially for the money some people want for these old vises.
Quite often people say "Good for another 100 years" when they see a restoration, whether it’s true or not. This one is definitely good for another 100 years. Please may I ask if you’ve restored it for use or restored it for preservation? I know neither is exclusive of the other, I'm just nosey.

How much clearance is there to punch out those vise jaw pins? What punches did you use? Those pins are notorious for breaking or not budging. Thanks
Emilio it's important to use a punch that is just a hair smaller then the pins, this way they don't mushroom.
I used a couple different punches. Eventually you will need a long punch to drive the pins out. You have to drive the pins out from underneath so the pins come out the top of the jaws. Only remove the jaws if absolutely necessary, I just got another vise last week that has no cuts on the jaws so I'm leaving them attached for the restoration, I will polish them on the vise! 😃👍
+ScoutCrafter thanks. I know about punching from underneath, that's why I asked about clearance. I guess you need short punches?
Emilio the reason I used differs punches is because the shorter the punch the less likely it will bend. Clearance isn't an issue because the vise is apart and you will flip each half over to work on it. One other note- If you do decide to remove the pins mark each pin's location and top/bottom of pin so you can put them back exactly where they came from...
You take a too any tool and turn them into conversation pieces I have two vices that could use attention but there are used frequently and it just not practical.I’d like to send you a pic of both of possible and get your input. Keep em coming !!!!

Hi Emilio - to get the jaws off you need to use a long punch and drive the pins out from the "inside out" they can be a real pain because they are a really good fit and over time become frozen. That was the hardest part of the job! Thanks for watching! 😃👍

Hi ScoutCrafter. I found a spray color I like but its an art spray made of acrylic. Is this an good type of paint for a vise and what would be the best primer? I wish Krylon or Rustoleum made more colors. Your videos are an inspiration, keep up the great work!😀👍
Hello Steve! I have never had good luck with acrylic.. It goes on easy, cleans up easy... And unfortunately comes off easy! For the vise you need oil base! Did you try a auto part store like Pep boys or Auto Zone... They sell automotive spray paint that has more color choices! My favorite is Rustoleum, if you visit a big Home Depot or Lowes they have more Rustoleum colors then other stores!!!
Thanks ScoutCrafter. The color I was hoping for is Valspar Fish Story but can't find it in spray or quart sized oil based enamel. Next choices are Duplicolor Engine enamel ceramic Ford Green or go all out for Metallic Burnt Orange. Decisions Decisions! Also, did you paint the inside of the base components? Hi ScoutCraft. I was hoping you could lend me some of your great advice again. I'm starting my vise project and wondering how you treat the inside of the stationary housing and inside of the base. Mine isn't as open as your Parker. Mine has a cast bevel gear and some hard to reach places. I used vinegar to clean it but let it sit too long and now has flash rust. Should I soak it again in vinegar or evaporust, then soak in baking soda and wire brush again? Also, is primer paint better for a vise or shellac, one or two coats? Lastly, lithium grease for the base? Grease/SAE30 mix for Acme screw, jaw slide and runners? And anti-seize for the base & jaw screws. Thank you for any help you can give. Love the videos and I'm learning a lot. Gonna mix some erls today. Lol

My mom was just gifted a vise. It happens to be the same one you are using here. We are just wondering what does the wrench tighten? Hers came with the wrench she was just unsure as to what it does. Any info you can offer would be great. Thank yiu
Hi Michelle! What a awesome gift she received! =) The wrench just allows the vise to swivel on the base that is bolted down to the bench. If you loosen it you can turn the vise left and right, tighten it up and the vise is locked in that position! Hope that helps! =)

Hey Brian, There was a guy making jaws for certain Parker vises but they weren't cheap... I think in the area of $185! 😳. Unfortunately these jaws are machined differently so they aren't easy to duplicate like other vises. I would try very hard to fix the jaws you have. I have seen guys weld a bead or two across the damaged areas and grind them down... the results were nice! If just the top corners and edges are screwed up that might be an economical option for you! 😃👍

Hi Bruce, the best place to find these vises are at Steam engine shows where they have a flea market, also Ebay always has a nice selection but you will pay an extra $50+ for shipping, however when you think about this as a lifetime purchase what's a few extra dollars? Thanks for watching! 😃👍
I recently found an old 4 inch craftsman vise from the 40s at my local Habitat for Humanity Restore. They tend to get left over tools and stuff from estate sales. I've also heard of people getting stuff from scrap yards.
