  • While not created in the Smoky Mountains, the Leadwing Coachman has been a popular pattern in the park since the early 1800s. Effective during any gray caddisfly hatch, this pattern generally looks like a diving caddis laying its eggs on the bottom of the stream.
Hook: #8-12 wet fly (standard or 1x long)
    Thread: Black
    Tail: Golden pheasant tippets
    Rib: Gold wire
    Body: Peacock herl
    Wings: Gray duck quills
    Hackle: Light brown or ginger

Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

Thanks Jim - and yeah, these golden pheasant tippets as tails have started growing on me this year. Probably all the GSM flies I tied in 2020. :-)

I love the fact that you tie “fishing flies” and not instagram flies. I feel like they are what the rest of us tie and fish lol. Great job sir!

Thanks man! Now I like to tie pretty flies when I can, but if it's going to take an extra ten minutes finding the perfect duck quill slips to make a pretty wing, I'll usually say screw it and make do with what I got. Especially if I'm tying to fill my boxes, NONE of those flies are perfect. :-)

Tied a fly almost identical to this about 60 years ago. I didn’t have the correct wings for an original Coachman so used what I had. It worked well for wild brownies. Happy New Year to you and your family.

Thanks Donald! I wonder if that's how a lot of variants got created... when someone substitutes a material and finds that it works equally as well, or even better. That's one of the coolest things about fly tying. We often have to use what we have to try and create something to fool a fish. It's really as simple as that! Thanks for watching my friend, and happy new year to you too! Cheers. -Matt

That sounds like a pretty cool variant Michael. Any time you can work some red into a fly it can be a trigger for some picky fish. I'll have to give it a shot.

Sir Matt Happy 2021, That's a great looking Fly. What feathers are most commonly used for wings on flies like this ? They come in pairs right? Thank you, also looking forward to seeing the Savage Flies Channel Grow and all it brings this New Year.
    Congrats Neil Cox

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks Edward! Good catch... I should have showed the feathers I cut these slips out of. It was just simple duck rump feather. But you could use any that are about the same thickness. Hen pheasant flight feathers, even turkey if you had some small enough. Goose would probably be a bit too thick. Here are the ones I got most recently: www.jsflyfishing.com/rumpf-duck-quill-pair *** I'm trying to do a new video on all the tying materials you can get from craft stores. Do you have a Michael's or A.C. Moore there in Texas? You can get a lot of materials and save a lot of money at those stores! I'm hoping to get this video done by Sunday afternoon. :-)
