Kristin thank you for sharing this with us! We got the chance to learn along with you. I feel I know you a little better because of your willingness to show your strengths and weaknesses, and you have a lot more strengths than you might realize! Love the hutch! I am happy for you to have it, from start to finish!
I think the hutch turned out so pretty! It is huge no wonder it took a while but you did a great job! I like that you left the hinges. Love how you decorated it too! 💕💕💕
Your hutch turned out beautifully-well worth the time, work & frustration. My father-in-law was a professional painter & he always said that when painting, you have to apply the paint like somebody else is paying for it! Thanks so much for sharing. Peg
Especially when you didnt think the piece was as big as what you thought lol. Im still learning so it helps making mistakes so you won't do them on future projects. Too bad it couldn't have been a smaller project I messed up on lol
Its absolutely gorgeous, you did a great job. You have more patience than I think I would have had. You never disappoint with your projects. Thank you for sharing.
The hutch turned out beautiful. I like all your decor on the shelves. Going to go back and watch how you did the cow in the house frame - I love that. Also, the tray. TFS.
That turned out beautiful!! I love the way you show ur projects warts and all! You dont try to act like it was a faultless project. Im sure it keeps others from making mistakes! I chalk painted my entire bedroom set a few months ago and at first i thought i made a huge mistake but it turned out great!
Wow after all that hard hard work Kristen that turned out absolutely amazing!! I don’t know if I would have had that much patience! Great great job in the end!!!
Always clean, sand, clean and prime two coats and wait 24 hours or longer before painting. Sand lightly before you paint two coats with dry time in between coats. I've learned what works when painting furniture. It turned out pretty!
Kristin, you did an amazing job. You definitely had your struggles. Over the years I've refinished alot of furniture. I've always given anything with a shellac finish a light sanding. Now days they have some amazing products that aren't too expensive you can just give a light spray and then paint. Chalk paint is amazing. Love how you decorated the hutch.
It's really beautiful.... It ACTUALLY looks a WHOLE LOT like one of my grama's hutches {the one that I'M getting}..... My favorite uncle actually built it for her a million years ago and so it has TWO sentimental reasons why I want this one. She's got a BEAUTIFUL one with the glass doors on it and such, but our home is entirely "vintage shabby chic" and that fancy one just would look really with my decor. But the one I'm getting is just a stained wood color that I'm gonna be painting once it's mine. It will PROBABLY be a SUPER PALE PINK chalk paint and I always use this AWESOME antique glaze in a satin finish from Lowe's (as opposed to the wax) and it gives it the PERFECT look!!!! {imagine an old, dirty pale pink silk ballet slipper} it's the PERFECT shabby chic look! That antique glaze is BEAUTIFUL! I pretty much use it on everything. Lol.
I watched this yesterday while I was getting ready and forgot to go back and comment ! Love it, definitely worth the hassle ! I have the worst luck with my furniture yellowing when I paint it also so I have to try that primer Ashleigh suggested !
I painted a similar hutch a few years ago and it was definitely more work then I was expecting. Yours turned out great and I love how you decorated it.
It turned out beautiful! Also, loved the family picture wall. When you did a “preview” of the photo wall at the beginning of your post, I thought there was lights behind it, because it just pops. Awesome.
Yes it took way longer than expected but im so glad its finished. I think the house being torn apart was the worse. its still not 100% put back together
Hi Kristen, through all your extra work in frustrations oh, you ended up with a success, the hutch is beautiful. I'm about to empty at my china cabinet and paint it.
Wow it was so worth all the trial and error girl😍!! It's georgous! Love your dining room paint too. The decor is perfect!! Awesome that you didn't just throw your hands up on the whole thing! Pat yourself on the back😁!!! You did it👍👍!!!!
I'd say the struggle was definitely real Kristin, but ohhhh how beautiful it came out in the end. Absolutely beautiful my friend! And I just love how you decorated your new hutch. Just lovely!!! You did an amazing job. Tfs....great video and make over. So glad you showed the wood putty stuff. I just acquired a beautiful antique dresser that will need some filling. Thanks again and take care. 👍🤗👍❤
How frustrating, but turned out beautiful! One suggestion I would offer if you do decide to tackle any more furniture pieces is to try Annie Sloan chalk paint. I've been painting furniture for years, and have tried every paint imaginable...and then I discovered Annie Sloan. I would drive 2 hours to buy it (we now carry it locally) because it is, in my opinion, the easiest paint to use on furniture. There is no prep work...just paint. I do, however, always test my older pieces that have a dark stain because occasionally you will encounter bleed through...just depends on the tannins in the wood. If bleed through occurs you can just hit that spot with either the spray on or brush on bullseye brand shellac and problem solved. The paint is more expensive, but I can usually paint about 3 dressers (2 coats each) with one quart. And then I seal it with the Annie Sloan wax. No yellowing. I love it!
I absolutely LOVE your hutch, you did an Amazing job, I'm sorry you had some trouble in the process but you did great! I am on the look out for a used hutch and you are an inspiration because I have felt really intimidated just thinking about refinishing one like you did, but I def learned important details from you! Thanks doll!
I always use DIY Paint. It’s so good for coverage. I only use the cheaper chalk paint on small projects. I love your hutch though! I’ve been looking for one like this for a while now. You live and learn but it turned out beautiful!
You did an awesome job girl!! Great tip on the stain block! Same thing happened to me once and I painted the darn thing over like 5 times!! Love this video!! Send me the hutch please and thank you! Lol 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼😘💕
We have been searching for a hutch just like this for months. Actually a dining set with hutch. It has to be white, not cream, and I really want an 8 seater round table. I am not having any luck! If anyone reading this has any ideas please let me know. Kristin, your hutch came out beautiful!
Bless your heart! I literally almost started crying for you when you brought it in and was talking about how trashed your house was and then how the poly made it yellow, OMG! Idk what I would have done after six cans of spray paint two gallons of paint then to have to go back put the blocker on then paint again! I’m so sorry that all happened but, the end result is beautiful! I’m still feeling so bad for you and how overwhelmed you must have felt! I’m glad you had Ashleigh to ask what to do! I really wish she would have known what you were doing from the get go, so she could have saved you some blood, sweat, and tears! Lol I’m glad it’s done! It’s beautiful and next time you have or I have a big project we know what to do before painting!! Have a blessed week girl! 😊💜🤗
It was all worth it. I just had two weeks of housework to catch up on. That was the worse 😃 it was rough and I called my mom and cried but then put my big girl panties on and finished 😃
Kristin Kay sometimes that’s exactly what we have to do, just grab the big girl panties lol. I’m glad you called your mom, I’m sure that alone made you feel much better! 😊
Those Mixtiles are cool- your family pictures turned out so pretty. But, girl, that Hutch, A-MAZE! Holy Guacamole! It really is beautiful, Kristin. I get that there are those pieces that give us trouble; but it will just make you appreciate it more... maybe ;) And your decor looks awesome on it. Great job. So I have a question... What are we supposed to use so it doesn't yellow? Polyurethane?
WOW, that came out gorgeous. I hate that stain that comes through after painting. I always try to use the Kilz as a primer. Love how you decorated the hutch. I can't wait to see how you decorate it for Christmas.
Cyndie here 💕Hi Kristen, Furniture refinishing is not easy and requires a lot of detail work. You did well, it looks super and is a nice addition to your home 👍😍💕😘
Your hutch looks fabulous!! You did a great job!! I know first hand what an undertaking this is. I painted and distressed my hutch, and I decided that I would never ever do that again with out a paint sprayer. Lol. I haven't bought one yet, but I haven't painted anymore large furniture pieces either. I'm waiting till I get one. Lol. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. ❤
The Polycrylic wasn't the problem, so you still could have used it to seal. It will not turn yellow like Polyurethane, however, it will not prevent wood tannin bleed through (which is what you experienced) unless you seal that in BEFORE putting any paint on. Pine wood has knots that will bleed through if not sealed before priming and/or painting. Other woods will do that as well, like mahogany and fake cherry painted junk made in China. Some can take MULTIPLE coats of sealer before it stops bleeding through (don't ask how I know that 12 coats of sealer may still not be enough). You could have used a few coats of the Polycrylic just on the knot areas, BEFORE painting, to seal those in. I've been painting furniture for about 10 years & struggled through MANY failures~& still do. Lol Also, when spray painting big items. it might be hard to find something large enough to support something that large, but if you lay it down on it's back on something that you can roll around, you'll get less paint runs, because there's less surface to fight gravity when it's laying down, if that makes sense? I spray painted a big farmhouse hutch that way with no run issues. Even with all your struggles, the piece turned out amazing and still one you should VERY proud of!! I had struggles with mine too, but it was beautiful too. You can definitely say you *earned* that piece. The items you decorated it with are perfect and I like to see things be more full than sparse. I am not a minimalist! Ha! Didn't mean to blab on, but didn't want you to think you couldn't use the Polycrylic sealer either.
Maybe if you use a primer before painting? And did you sanded first? I'm just saying since I watch white cottage company channel and she always do that to all the furnitures, she's really good at it.
You did a great job but it's a little too clutter for my taste. My tip would be to stick two groups of Threes or fours when decorating shelves so it doesn't look too clutter.

That’s a good way to look at things. He’s a smart one
Girl- you rocked it! Painting furniture is no joke. There's definitely a lot of learning and fixing along the way. You knocked it out of the park! ❤
Especially when you didnt think the piece was as big as what you thought lol. Im still learning so it helps making mistakes so you won't do them on future projects. Too bad it couldn't have been a smaller project I messed up on lol
I took 3 weeks to do my first buffet-I get it! But, you did it!!
Its absolutely gorgeous, you did a great job. You have more patience than I think I would have had. You never disappoint with your projects. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you. My patience was running dry lol
Good for you that you stayed with your project !

Beautiful! Thanks for showing us what DIDNT work, too.
That’s a giant undertaking. P.s. Kwik =quick
Lol😃 thanks
lol! I had to rewind when I first heard it. Had to laugh, but didn't want to pick on her after all the trouble she had with her project.

I painted a similar hutch a few years ago and it was definitely more work then I was expecting. Yours turned out great and I love how you decorated it.
You can get the chalk paint wax from walmart and it works really good at protecting your painted furniture.
SWEETNESS AND LIGHT!!😀❤👍
It turned out beautiful! Also, loved the family picture wall. When you did a “preview” of the photo wall at the beginning of your post, I thought there was lights behind it, because it just pops. Awesome.

Beautiful hutch, love it no room in my house for one, tfs, love from Tn ❤️
I wanted to show you my hutch/china cabinet, but I cant seem to post a pic. I painted the back wall of the hutch chalk board paint(black).

great idea!
Thank you for sharing your trials so we don't have to. It turned out lovely nonetheless.
Very nice!!!!
Maybe if you use a primer before painting? And did you sanded first? I'm just saying since I watch white cottage company channel and she always do that to all the furnitures, she's really good at it.
Yep. Should have done both. I guess I always need to use a primer 😃
Did you chalk paint. You did a beautiful job
Fabulous. I need to paint a wall ladder and so not looking forward to it. What paint do you recommend? Chalk paint?
I like chalk paint just because it dries fast and covers better so you don't have to do as many coats! Unless its this giant hutch lol
Love this! 💕
Thank you
Can’t get past the music voice, but the paint outcome looks good. Thanks for sharing
You did a great job but it's a little too clutter for my taste. My tip would be to stick two groups of Threes or fours when decorating shelves so it doesn't look too clutter.
