  • “American Dances” is a three-movement suite originally composed for the Boston Pops Brass. Each movement features an American popular music genre. “Swing” was composed based upon the American jazz and big band tradition that was popular in the 1930s and 1940s. This will have your audience tapping their toes and clapping their hands as you band sizzles throughout.

Robert W. Smith was supposed to conduct my all district band today, instead John Fulton, one of his close friends did and we played only songs by Robert and this was one we played

The wind parts, notably the trumpets, bones, and saxes, are written well enough. However EVERYTHING needs to be rewritten in cut time. The quarter note bassline is written as 8ths, for SOME reason. And the 16th note figures written as 8th note runs would be confusing. And no in jazz likes swung 8th notes written as dotted 8th 16th notes. But poor jazz writing is what you usually get when a classical guy writes your jazz. Still a fun chart though.

The drum-set part as-written is the most wack attempt at writing and indicating up-tempo swing I've ever seen, and should be ignored as demonstrated by this recording. Hat should be on the upbeat/ands, not on the beats as indicated (notably painful in the solo section.)
Hopefully this helps someone who has to play this set part in the future and says "Huh?" like I did at first glance.
