My oldest and fondest Christmas memory was the year Santa left an Odyssey 2 under the tree for my brother an I.
Thanks for the trip back in time.

It released in North America in September ‘78. I bought mine in ‘80.
I still have it, and even the box is decent for its age. It works great after 42 years.
Unfortunately I sold all but three games.
I’m going to start collecting for it again as I am in nostalgia mode. :)

Great video! I got this exact console new in 1981. I think that parts warranty $24.95 is for warranty only. The console cost way more than that back in the day. Some of the best games are part of the "challenger series".

My 1st and only video game console!!! Loved it!
Bought at "Crazy Eddie's" in 1978 in New Jersey for Christmas.
    Awesome!

Because your video has so much snow, I will mention that while the composite video upgrade may be a great idea, merely opening up the case and replacing the cable - all you need is to take out the Maganavox cable which is RCA on the internal side and proprietary on the RF adapter side - just replace it with an actual RCA cable, and then use your coax adapter. It will look better just from that, and requires almost no skill to swap out the cable, it is just a matter of unscrewing the case. No soldering involved. By now you should know Pick Axe Pete requires you to get the key which appears only briefly, then you go through a door to get to the next level.

This was my first console, Christmas 1979. The console was totally submerged in two different basement floods in the ‘80s and only just stopped working two years ago. I’ve since replaced it with a working console and even got The Voice module.

I absolutely love it when skul gets stuff like this. I've personally never heard of an odyessy (pardon my spelling) but the excitement in his voice is calming espeically since both of siblings just got covid

Not sure if it helps, but if I remember right, I think with some of the games you need to use the "player 2" controller instead of the P1 controller

My father purchased one back in12/19/81 for Christmas from Kmart for 321.59. I still have the receipt after all these years. But the system and games is long gone. I kind of only remembers playing KC munchins and golf.

I've got one I bought about 10 years ago in slightly better shape the box is complete with manuals but no invoice of sale. I've yet to get any games for it but I think I've got everything else I need. thanks for showing what you had working it looks like a lot of fun!

You should unless you really want computerized voices on the few games that had them then you would have to look into the voice module add on

It really wasn’t one of the last consoles before NES lol! At the time, it was considered one of the first of the 2nd wave. Intellvision, astrocade, Emerson Arcadia, vectrex, and others followed…. The third wave consoles (what were defined as that at the time) were the colecovsion and Atari 5200. NES was the next wave after that…. Especially in North America where there was a gap of couple years before it took off.

Had one back in 1980. Had to go to Crazy Eddie to find games for it back then. Now I have the complete N. American collection of games. It has some fun games for it. Pick Axe Pete and KC Munchkin were fun but it also has UFO, Attack of the Tumelords, Freedom Fighters, Turtles and Killer Bees that were cool as well.

It’s a fun little console. Lots of simple, unique and sometimes quirky games. There are multi/flash carts for it, as well as a lot of new home brews. And the “Master Strategy” series are hybrid video/board games. Really cool.
As for that paperwork, since it shows it’s from the ‘parts division’, it was very likely a receipt from a service center repair. The console cost a lot more than $24 back in the day.

We had one of these. Pretty early, too-our controllers were silver, like on the box, and considering that you basically never see silver controllers in videos nowadays, that must have been a pretty limited run. Not hard to imagine why, either: The silver paint pretty readily flaked off wherever it was touched. So the buttons on our controllers were more or less bare of the silver coating after a while. Footnotes: The bottom of the warranty notes that it ends in December 1981 so it was purchased in 1981. Also, yes, the joystick is supposed to do things in Cosmic Conflict (one of the best and earliest games on the console, incidentally), so clearly its broken nature was preventing that, even after you seemingly got it up and running.

Best option is to disconnect the rf cord and replace it with a standard rca video cable. Then use an rca female to 75 ohm coax male adapter. Bypass the RF Modulator switch all together. It will get rid of that snow.

I really love the box art of this console. also imho KC Munchkin was the best home version of Pac-man for that era. I had the Atari 2600 & I was so jealous of my friend that had the O2 because he had KC & I had the lousy 2600 Pac-Man. as a side note a few months later I got Tigervision's Jawbreaker (a very nice PM clone for the 2600.) after that I never played 2600 PM again! (even til this day in 2022.)

One of the problems with the quality is that you are using a 9 VDC wallwort when the original is 11.3 V AC... How did you miss THAT?

  • @spaztekwarrior
    @spaztekwarrior ปีที่แล้ว

Yes you should be able to push in the joystick a bit.
You need to use the right controller, not left, for Cosmic Conflict. Did you try both?

The invoice isn't for that console since the consoles were selling for over $150 back then.

I find it strange that when I got my odyssey 2 that I was able to open it up and take out the cord that goes to the tv and put the yellow rf cord in it and plug in to tv and it works fine. I love my odyssey 2 and play it almost daily

There's only so much you can do with a 1-button joystick, especially with sports games. For some reason Football! and Baseball! are better here than Atari's Football and Home Run. Sadly, the Atari got better over time, with programmers learning tricks and going to 4K, then 8K ROMS, but Odyssey2 didn't until 3rd-party games came out in 1983. Perhaps having the same guy program like half their games meant he phoned it in?
