Hi Jason! I take my SofftTool sponges off, and put them all in my hand, squirt Dawn dish soap onto them. add water and squeeze the soap into the tips over and over, sometimes adding more Dawn and water, and squeeze again until the colors are pretty much gone. I then air dry them on a paper towel. Works great and saves me money, too!!!!
I have had really great luck washing my sofft tools and sponges (brushes if relevant), with my Paul Mitchell tea tree shampoo, then air drying, just as you suggest... Believe it or not, I find it to be better than Palmolive oxy dish soap, which is prob comparable to dawn, and I only need to do one run it with it... I also use tea tree shampoo to clean my beauty blenders and they always turn out better than their brand name cleaner... I mention these because, as you most likely already know, they are very similar to the delicate sofft tools, yet they fill up with oils and creams... They appear to be permanently stained, yet I've had them return to like new state! This is why I mention, because if you use them for your own makeup, then you know how dirty they can get... It's a good comparison, to know how well they clean even those! I am aware, the shampoo is expensive, but I find it to be worth every penny as a sponge and brush cleaner because of the job it does. Plus, the smallest bottle would prob last for a few years, if you got it solely to clean these. Make it worth it, imo. There are also other brands that I'm sure will do just as well! But yeah, I think this is still way more cost effective than purchasing new ones each time they get too saturated with pastel. Especially is you are a granny user of the pans! Great suggestion you had, awesome to bring up washing! Happy arting!
Thank you Jason, some good tips here. I’d only challenge one thing and that’s buying loads of cheap plastic that you use a few times then throw to the landfill. Better to invest in the long lasting sponges and tips and wash them, for the planets sake (and therefore our sake too).
Thanks Jason! I have washed with Dawn Liquid the tips from the "sof knives' but without much success. I have lost many this way, as the colours never seem to come out, but the sponges split and rot. So- I have a bunch of them I use, and sadly as they are expensive, I will continue to use and purchase, because I really love the pan pastel. The little cheap make up sponges seem OK, for small areas, but rather tiring on large areas. Thanks again for your tips!!
Thanks for the tips & tricks. One I learn during the last piece that I did, is that you can use the very tip of the finer point tools to apply thin lines or small spots of pastel. I used this trick to apply pastel I had lifted from a stick of Terry Ludwig eggplant to create pin point spots of shadow. The only professional pastelist that I have seen use brushes with pan pastels was painting on a velvet paper, rather than a sanded one. The surface looked like it held the pastel very well. I have been intending to try this and just haven’t gotten around to it yet.
I have found a few similar like tools on ali express and temu and got some. They are not terrible, they do not release quite as well as the sofft tools but on practice pieces before I do my final copy they are great. The biggest issue is forcing myself not to go through every tip I have when I change colors. I feel like by the end they are all gray. I need to be a little more organized with how I use tools for sure. I do not like to use brushes at all. I have tried it and it just doesn't do what I want it to do.
Well Jason, I must be pressing too hard as my Sofft tool sponge tips are getting trashed after just a few passes on the pastelmat paper. Is the Canson Velvet kinder to them?

Hey Jason..if you pluck the makeup sponge off you can slip it on the sofft knife to make a more comfortable handle...
Thank you!! ❤

Go onto good old Temu and get the applicator sets for about 2-3 dollars. Just order heaps!! Lol.
Als je ze lang niet gebruikt gaan ze ook stuk ze verstaffen worden hart en onbruikbaar
Is there a link for the sponges please, not the knives?
Amazon has them Sofft Tools. You will find packages of just the sponge
