JANUS is still so frickin' good! I was obsessed with it back in the day and watched the MV a million times, but I still kept getting goosebumps watching it with you.
Ahhhhh yayyy i love boyfriend so freaking much! Im sorry if someone has said already or you know but while they disbanded for a while they are now back, theyre in their own company if i remember correctly and while they couldnt use boyfriend anymore they now are called BF! My fav songs by them are janus, i yah and bounce! Unfortunately theyre super underrated 😭

Aaaaahhhh a Boyfriend reaction in 2024?!? I never thought I’d see the day! They were SO underrated. The youngest, Minwoo was only 16 when they debuted so they kept them in cute concepts for a while and they got a LOT of backlash for it. They started expanding into darker concepts with Janus and IYAH but Starship did them completely dirty and barely promoted them, eventually had them only promoting in Japan and then basically kept them in the basement after that. They currently promote under the name BF but the fandom is nowhere near as big as it used to be. They still work hard though. I will never forget them! Also, yes, that is Bora from Sistar and Sistar19 in the Boyfriend MV.
I highly recommend Bounce and Witch too, it's amazing

So to answer your question Boyfriend did debut during 2011, which makes them a 2nd gen group. They were Starship’s first boy group at the time, so the company really didn’t know what to do with them as a concept for them yet. Also yes that was Bora of Sistar in their debut song. Janus was very important for the group to finally slowly start going to the concept they had wanted, there was concerns they might have been disbanded by the company had they not done well. Unfortunately Boyfriend were neglected and sent to promote in Japan by Starship as the company began to focus and push MonstaX more, this no hate to the group, it’s just a common thing a lot of companies did to their ‘beginning’ groups. Boyfriend did eventually sadly disbanded in 2019 due to not renewing with Starship, they actually did return in 2021 as BF now under a new company.
They were super underrated, they were one of those groups that had a great start in Korea appearing in Sistar's video Push. Unfortunately they got sent to Japan and rarely came back in Korea. I think they were in their forth or fifth year before they won their first award. Starship blatantly ignored them to concentrate on MonterX. I love a lot of their songs, they have some really great love songs that showcase their impressive vocals. Alarm is a beautiful song, Bounce is good. Witch was great to watch live. 💜 Bestie are great or Spica had amazing vocals.
wouldn't say they're 'super' underated since they were known at least, especially in the first few years and being from Starship at the time Sistar was around kinda helped putting them on the map. even in The Unit, they were treated as among the big names that shocked the mentors with their appearance(like Nuest in Pd101). they just faded with time like with many groups, unfortunately. there were many that never was on the map or known except by their own fans. but i get what you're trying to say, i guess.
Boyfriend had a good fan base in there day . But starship was more interested in promoting Monsta X so boyfriend was kind of sidelined which is sad But looking at the talent and stage presence of Monsta X I’m not surprised why
Their song Love Style was my absolute jam back in the day. this was such a crazy nostalgia trip haha

They are or atleast were back just under the name BF and at their own company. They couldn't use the name boyfriend thats why the name changed to BF.
oooh looking forward to watching this vid. boyfriend was one the first kpop groups i ever watched back in 2014 when a friend was introducing me her favorite groups. back then i didn't even imagine i would turn into such a big kpop fan, haha
Ahhhhh Boyfriend!!!!!! They were great! Quite a few groups had the potential to be successful in 2nd gen and their companies completely destroyed them. This group is another example. I still have their song "Alarm" on my playlist and that's from like, 10 years ago!! I love it so much and never get tired of it. Hyunseong is my bias. And I don't know if you clocked it, but there are twins in the group! I can still tell them apart even now lol.

You have said their sound is distinct and girly yet their vocals are mature and wanted to check more of them. I recommend 'Hi~', 'Now, We', 'Destiny', 'Goodnight Like Yesterday', and 'Beautiful Days'. It's also their tenth anniversary this year on November, so I hope you react to them if they're still on your to-do list.

Not a Boyfriend fan but i remember when i heard Iyah back then i really liked it. even listening to it now i still like it a lot. i mean it's composed by Sweetune, hard to mess up with that though i don't listen to many Sweetune boygroup songs n mostly listen to their girlgroup songs. anyway, since you mentioned abt the orchestra sound in kpop, i wonder if you would like to check out ONF most recent promoted song, Bye My Monster. i think it's right up the orchestra alley(though i think i read it might sample actual classical song as well). and idk if you will find the song overdramatic or not, but for me, i find it epic and grand the way 2nd gen epic songs make me feel and their vocals are really something. these days it's hard to find a song that really impress me but the song did just that so i'm recommending it. also, for older groups with some orchestra sound, i would recommend SS501 - they have songs like Find and Love Ya with that elements and some Bsides too, though i love most of their title tracks anyway. maybe ZE:A Ghost of Wind too. okay i should stop now before more come to mind. haa.

Boyfriend!! The first boy group under Starship, making them labelmates with Sistar and Monsta X :) Their debut in 2011 with "Boyfriend" definitely made waves because iirc they're the first group to have identical twins in the lineup - Youngmin and Kwangmin! (the Jo twins, their last name is Jo). They also went against the grain because they had a much brighter and more chic concept compared to the big male groups at the time, like Super Junior, 2PM, or MBLAQ, who were more "masculine". But in a way they kind of followed along Infinite's path and went for the sharp choreo, plus the iconic key changes for their last chorus!
Even though they didn't become quite the staple name of a group compared to Sistar, and having won some rookie awards in their debut year, they'll always hold a special place for me from back then haha.
A fun fact is they have a "Min" line and a "Hyun" line based on the members' names: Donghyun (leader) and Hyunseong (main vocal), then Jeongmin (main vocal), Youngmin (vocal), Kwangmin (rapper), and Minwoo (rapper) XD
Another song I can definitely recommend is "Love Style", it has such a cool and fresh vibe :D
Ok, I'm late to this but as I did scroll down and no one said it and as you said that they disbanded for a while in the end so I'm here to say that THEY DIDN'T disband, they rebranded to BF and they still release songs here and there.
The one you pointed out the vocals is Jeongmin and he is active as a solo singer (mostly ballads) BUT I need to request you to try the "solos" of Kwangmin that is one of the twins AND the rapper, but he releases more rock oriented songs (one even with a band) as "Cats Drink Coke" (interesting artistic name, right?) where he is a SINGER not a rapper. By the way, as you also pointed out that they (the twins) would be good actors, Youngmin actually works as a musical actor in Japan.
Boyfriend has two main "phases/ages" the cute one when they debuted and them after the "Infinitization", when they started releasing songs by Sweetune (that was mainly known for his Infinite songs hence that "Infinitization" term). SO if you didn't already check on Infinite, you need to. Also, Sweetune also produced a bunch of songs for 9muses and if you don't know them you totally SHOULD, specially if you love Sistar, they have kind of that same sexy vibe.
Starship totally did Boyfriend dirty and that is the main reason I just REFUSE to support any group they released after MonstaX. (deep sigh) Once MostaX started gaining more popularity they just tossed Boyfriend in Japan (kind like Pledis did with NU'EST) and then they would only bring Boyfriend back to Korea releasing ballads right beside when there were major name releases (like BTS and EXO) at the same time so they just got totally swallowed by the masses as air and not noticed at all, which totally buried their career because most kpop fans don't really follow Japanese releases. Thing is Boyfriend Japanese releases were absolute bangers on their own and people missed a lot for not knowing them. In Japan they were under KissEnt so if you want to check those releases it is fine. My favorites are "Be My Shine" (their JP debut), "Glider" and "Jackpot".
Sorry for the rant but it makes me mad when people just complain about Starship and the "disbandment" without acknowledging the fact that they are still together. Their BF Twitter account recently posted about their 13th debut anniversary in May and their online talk events, they always have this kind of online talk events for birthdays, releases and anniversary but unless you're a Bestfriend (their fandom) you know nothing about it. Korean fans pretty much forgot about them and international fans mostly did as well, they mostly "work" now with a few international fans and a really, I mean, REALLY loyal Japanese fanbase. You can find BF/solo releases on their/Jeongmin own "agency/company" youtube channel WESTTIME (westtime4086) and Cats Drink Coke/Kwangmin stuff on his channel (catsdrinkcoke8151).
Hella long rant/comment but much needed if you have any interest on Boyfriend/BF and didn't know their wereabouts.
And well as you said On & On isn't a Title Track it was like a "pre-release" for their 3rd mini-album Witch (and Witch is my favorite TT and recomendation) but it was mostly because that year they were so busy in Japan because the group was more succesful in Japan than in Korea hving more japanese releases than korean, so this was more like "we didn't forget about the korean fandom we're just busy"
This is something outdated but for a long time BoyFriend by Boyfriend was considered The Hymn of flower boy concept, like it was the perfect song for the ones who love that concept (like me), it's so cute, the softboy shy energy with a little cringe that feels so genuine in a way making them even more cute, it feels like an "ideal type of flowerboy boyfriend"
