      @@Miata822 That's bullshit. Dropping an engine while you're swapping it out on yourself might kill you, so anyone doing a video on a gas engine repair is a criminal? Free climbing might kill you, so let's ban all the guys who do funny videos about climbing...let's keep adding to that list.
      If someone doesn't get that the "funny attitude" is just part of the show and not actually the way to go, that person has already way bigger issues than remotely getting a crashed Tesla and electrocuting themselves.
      Let's go to the real point: there is no real danger, the only reason Tesla fanboys say this kind of thing is because they're mad at guys who do that sort of repair stuff and point out Tesla's terrible service and long term support.
      As a guy that likes Tesla very much but surely is no fanboy, i totally appreciate Rich Rebuilds. After all, if we only talk about the amazing parts of the Tesla world, the bad aspects will never improve.

      You can almost guess: the parts that are easy to retrofit are probably in the new M3's already - others, like those that depend on the rear aluminum alloy casting aren't in - YET - the new mega ton stamping press which they are installing in Fremont, however might be for a leapfrog casting more encompassing than what is currently for the Y (3 pieces). Elon Musk mentioned there were TWO of these mega die-casting presses in the world, one made in Italy (probably the one in Fremont now) and the other in China (for the Shanghai MIC Model Y).
      Edit - not stamping but die-casting presses - thanks @David Elliott

      He is comparing the release version of M.Y to the release version of M.3. Imo its a fair comparison, even if the M.3 of course also changed since that time - maybe even in part due to his input. Sandy, could you point out source of the battery breather "pops" that M3 owners are very familiar with? Will it be corrected on the MY?

    • @sooocheesy
      @sooocheesy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I suspect it's not the breather itself that is making the 'pop', but rather the large metal panel flexing that makes a sound. The internal pressure is supposed to be controlled by the breather but if the rate of pressure change exceeds the capacity of the breather (I've only heard it while supercharging when a relatively large amount of heat is generated quite quickly) a small amount of pressure can build up, causing the aluminum to deform and 'pop'

    • @SherlocckHolmez
      @SherlocckHolmez 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sooocheesy Ah right that makes sense. When it's freezing out it's even worse. As I commute to work my car thunks all the way down the highway as battery warms up. I just hope after a couple years of thunking it doesn't cause stresses and fails.

    • @Dave5843-d9m
      @Dave5843-d9m 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The other thing I’m wondering about is the seat mounts on the battery control module cover. Does this mean the seats must be removed any time the battery is removed from the car? Also, are there 4 more seat mount locations on the chassis to the left and right of these mounts?

    I love their design philosophy, they are obviously thinking in advance to be able to standardize their battery "form factor". The batteries are lasting insanely longer than most imagined though, so battery replacement looks to likely be a non-issue. The interesting thing will be the possibility for upgrading your battery to a dramatically better energy density unit in the future, and the software to support it is easily deployed ahead of time.

    All Chevy Bolts that have>ever< been produced are now in a massive recall. Until battery replacement, owners are not supposed to charge fully, deplete fully or park a Bolt inside, for fear of fire.
    Apparently, the Bolt has no ability to monitor the health of an individual cell in its complete battery pack. Otherwise, Chevy would be able to run a diagnostic to detect which Bolts have the issue.
    Kind of like a "check engine light" but for the battery itself.
    Here's my question:
    Is there any EV manufacturer that has this type of cell level monitoring in its battery pack? Tesla? VW? Anyone?
    I've driven a 2013 Nissan LEAF for 8 years, as I think about replacing it with a more modern and longer range EV, this is something I definitely would like to know before I buy.

    As someone who works on high voltage equipment regularly (20kV+), I had to chuckle at the amount of protective gear worn here. I think the max voltage on that pack is maybe 400V.. and while it would zap the shit out of you - possibly resulting in death - if you touch the wrong thing, it isn't going to jump across the air and attack your face with a sudden lightning bolt.

      Accidentally drop a metal object and the current turns said metal object into a rapidly expanding cloud of molten droplets. Mr Munro, that pyro switch probably disconnects all high voltage not just two batteries. Because batteries wired in series to get the high voltage if you open a circuit between the sets of batteries ... it will shut off the current on the entire block. There are probably like 4 blocks at ~90v each - giving 360v. I am willing to bet they used common 360v industrial ac motor [at least initially pulse control].

    • @benoitmichel100
      @benoitmichel100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dear Brian, Tesla motors are far from industrial AC motors. Check the Munro video about electric motors and you will learn that the rear Y motor is a permanent magnet one, with a special set of magnets used to bend the magnetic flux in a very uncommon but affichent way. That motor has been developed for the 3, the Y, and the Semi by Konstantinos Laskaris and his team of fellow researchers in Greece. Those guys are the best EV motors engineers you can find on the planet ! And, with a past as electric engineer having developed my own EV and a variable reluctance motor during the 20th century, I know a bit about e-motors...

    • @browntigerus

      Second that, but it's probably too difficult to pry them apart. Take a look at the Model 3 pack and you will see there is bonding foam everywhere. th-cam.com/video/64_iBKLSnGA/w-d-xo.html
      You'd have to dissolve the foam and then de-solder everything all the while making sure never to touch anything with metal. I suppose, Munro and associates have better things to do.

    • @sooocheesy
      @sooocheesy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to keep in mind that the only power going into the car is high voltage DC into the main pack, which then gets converted down to 12V (and possibly other voltages) to operate the computers, fans, etc. So technically because the input of that module is high voltage, and the output is low voltage.. it's a DC to DC converter.

    • @brothervance1932
      @brothervance1932 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The word capacitor is often abbreviated as 'cap;' they had probably been connected across those high-voltage switches to protect the switch contacts. When automotive ignition systems had employed a cam-actuated switch (points), a capacitor reduced erosion due to electric arcing of the metal contacts.
