This is my primary reason for playing around with my dust collection so much. Less sweeping.

one of my summer jobs was with a cleaning supply company. after my boss convinced me he was more qualified to push a broom them I was, he demonstrated a similar version of 'just get it out of the way without kicking up a lot of dust" method. Funny thing about those old guys, they put their time in before something more important came along too.

Your right. I was an electrical apprentice when the TD Center was going up. One day a week I joined the labours along with the plumber. fitters. etc. apprentices to sweep for the day so the trades didn't get backcharged for garbage clean up. If you made dust you soon heard about it. Not always politely.

Who knew John was a clean freak? Hahahahaha. Thanks for the tip. I am definitely guilty of incorrectly sweeping.

Ah yes. Once a year we would sweep the dock area of the Lumberyard I worked in as a teenager. It took twelve hours and it raised a cloud of dust that could block out the sun. I suggested a hose and some grain shovels and became an instant hero. Edit: I didn't even notice you had shaved until I read another comment. LoL

I use my dust collector to vacuum up everything. No sweeping in my shop, but I only really clean (on a regular basis) the center part of my shop. I clean under my equipment when I move it to the center to use it.

Fully agree! Getting a broom with very fair straws helps avoiding kicking up the dust too.

Hey John love the tip! You kind of gave me permission to “not sweat the small stuff”.
But when you do go to town to really sweep it all up, wet a bunch of sawdust and throw it around. It really keeps the dust down. Thanks again 👍🏻😊

About the only time I use a broom in the shop is when I'm jointing and planing. The dust collector gets most of it, but some always escapes. Otherwise, I use a vacuum. Clean, and nothing kicked up into the air. I finish in the same space as I build so I try to get the floor clean so I'm not kicking up dust just walking around.

    Excellent thought and habit John!
A clean shop is important as it can be a trip hazard and can be messy. I’m a organized guy, as can’t stand clutterness (if there is such a word). I pickup some tools that won’t be used again to get them out the way and make more room where I’m working. It just makes work more enjoyable and will need to be picked up at the end of the day anyway, so might get it out of the way.
Funny 😄, you will get more effective progress done picking up and cleaning during the task than after the task because you won’t be stumbling over it during the work. It would drive my friends crazy when we did a project together. I just felt better to have an organized place to work 😆, and besides I can find my tools easier instead moving have of the unnecessary tools out of the way. It just makes sense 👍.

Good tip John. I didn't learn until my mid 20's how to sweep a floor properly without kicking up dust. I see many folks, of all age groups, doing what you were describing.
On a similar subject with cleaning, I have great difficulty keeping the table saw dust from piling up on the table surface. Do you have any ideas on how to make a table saw blade shroud for dust collection out of wood? I had a dewalt 7491rs that had a canvas shroud that was awesome, but i gave to my brother for christmas. Ever since then, i have been wanting something similar on my grizzly 0691. I currently have a 1hp 4" dust collector attached to the cabinet, but it seems like it is not enough. I covered many cracks, openings and even installed a zero clearance plate. One of the Saw stops has a dust shroud around their blade with a port for the collector. I hope this coaxes you into a blade dust shroud build video.

Thanks, John. Hadn’t really thought of sweeping floors like this. Now I know. My shop is a disaster. I’ve got sh*t piled everywhere. I seem incapable of organizing it. How did you learn to get organized?

I worked with a toolmaker who never cleaned up. His attitude was: they're going to pay me whether it's clean or dirty. He also never picked up a part that fell on the floor until he needed to work on it. His attitude about that was: it will be there if I need it.

Cleaning a floor too spotless is a waste of time yes. As soon as you make 1 cut its all covered in fine dust again. I usually just keep it fairly clean no obstacles to fall on etc. I see you really enjoy the sweeping as much as you do shoveling snow ha ha. Screw the robot lawn mowers and vacuum cleaners we need one that sucks in wood chips and dust when were out of the shop.
