    We used a blanket over our large beach umbrella to hold it up and make an easy tent. Provided you have a good stand and/or sand bag so it won't blow over IF it should get windy during the night. We use a bag of soil as a sand bag. We use umbrellas because we already have so many we use in garden in summer months.

    It is also a good idea to put a few large rocks around the roots so the sun will warm up the ground and keep it warm during the night, it helps.

    Thank you Shamus for making this video. It’s very helpful. I live in Henderson Nevada which is pretty much the same weather as Arizona. I have two mango trees, Haden and valencia pride, can I plant them outside? Do I need to protect them in the winter? Thanks

    Hey shamus and jake !
    I love to grow exotic plants , regarding the mangoes are they cold tolerant when they mature ? how many years would you cover them ? Can you tell me something about the cold hardiness of cherimoya, lychee and longans? I live in Northern Portugal USDA zone 9 occasional frost occur during winter , and its a humid weather .
    Keep doing what you do , you are an inspiration (and hope bringer) to many growers around the world who want to grow something different . Regards

    Awesome video.
    Looking at the light. It's a 500w halogen. Even 250watts get hot.
    At the example distance between the light and the tree (shown in the video ), won't the light "burn" parts of the tree?

    I used a big black plastic bag on my soursop and Spanish lime trees and it burned my leaves. I'm gonna have to do this but it only gets cold for only a few days here in Central Florida.

    What if I go on vacation for a day or 2. How long will the plant survive if I don't open up the plastic everyday?

      If it's just one or two days I think you'll be fine. I order trees online and they saran wrap them all up and ship them 2-day shipping in the mail. They don't need to breath as much as humans do, so as long as it's a short stint I think it would be fine.

    • @Derek_Wong

      Ken Ly usually u don't water during winter since it rains. An keep on till spring comes/no longer needs as frost danger has pasted.

    Hold on, "leave citrus alone"? I live in north Florida but we do have freezes from time to time. Around 28 degrees at night. This is ok for old and young lemon trees? I'm hearing contradictory information on this.

    • @YaDyRRa
      @YaDyRRa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hulk Smash! My lemon tree died at 30 degrees, uncovered. The lime tree is alive, in a pot and I pull it in as close to the wall and light as possible in the Winter.

    I guess the moral of the story is you can grow anything anywhere if you are willing to put in the work.... I grow things on 59th AVE that shock my neighbors.. But I also tell them, "are you going to wake up at 4am to spray your plants with water on freeze days"?.... They look at me in shock.. You got to do that... hahahahahaha Of course if you want bushels of tomatoes in the middle of January.

      Do you get tomatoes in January where you live? If so, is that because you spray them with water like you mentioned?

    • @johnrambo6861
      @johnrambo6861 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      buyerofsorts I get tomatoes chilies eggplant in November and February- May. Phoenix Arizona.
      I found I plant them dense about 30 plants in a 6 foot by 6 foot area and the frost doesn't affect them because their heat helps each other.

    Bubble plastic (the type use in packaging stuff) should work better.

      @@TSIRHCSEVAS Because the air pockets in it work like double-glazed windows. More layers in which temperature can change gradually.
