60k (USD) is likely a real cash cow for a vehicle that's required little to no P&D over the past 10 years or so. I bet they can make these for $30-ish thousand, and are riding the wave caused by the other manufacturers and their over zealous MSRP increases. My wife loves her '18 that we got for $33k brand new. Seems like a steal now.
I just got a 24 2wd limited. I need 4wd like I need another hole in my head. My last vehicle was a 4wd Cherokee with a 4-cylinder turbo. I'm a wimp, so only went off roading twice in it and was scared of getting stuck both times. The RWD 4Runner is perfect for me, but I'm glad that his cousins can handle the mud.
You should do reviews on the model that is mostly available, the TRD Off Road. Locally the TRD Pro is priced too high, and low volume (at least in Canada). In 2022, I could’ve ordered a TRD Pro and waited at least 8-12 months, or a TRD Off Road for $10K less and wait 4-6 months.
The government is designing vehicles now, not the manufactuers . The next gen engines aren't designed to be more reliable or performant. They are designed to produce less emissions.
Yeah I’m extremely happy with my 2020 Tacoma SR5 4x4. I’ve had it for 4 years and have no plans on upgrading to a 4th gen. Just not sold on Toyotas new direction yet, I’m sure they’ll get the issues sorted out but, at least for me right now, the simplicity of the 3rd gen is the way to go.
Can't beat the Japanese made vehicles, the Tex/Mex vehicles are all problem ridden. Sure the 4 runner has bad fuel economy but its bullet proof. I'd wait 5 years on the new ones to let Toyota get the bugs out. What I want is that new transmission the new ones have on my 2023. Wish it would hook up to my tried and true v6, now that would be awesome..

"Everything goes away and there's something new coming..." (Passes old Honda Accord abandoned)... probably still runs... What a foreshadowing metaphor. (15:40)
Looks like the New Tacoma's have some transmission issues, and there have been confirmed report of transmission failure. I wouldn't trust the New 4Runner for the first couple of year models until it's proven.
I have a Gen 3 Taco that I will never get rid of. Went to purchase a 2023 TRD Pro 4runner at $56000 and when I asked what was the bottom line they tell me $64000 off the lot ...... like, "F" you ...............
Here's the bottom line. The advantages of the Bronco and Jeep serve 0.5% of this market. The other 99.5% want the space, comfort, reliability and reputation of the 4Runner. I can have all of that and still have something more than capable of handling my off road needs, as I am in the 99.5%.
Toyota has never played the "top numbers" game vs jeep and Bronco. Wrangler and Bronco are better on paper, and probably in a manufacturer automotive press off-road adventure, but probably not in your driveway. If all you do is drive it brand new, but not pay for upkeep and repairs as it ages, wrangler and Bronco may seem much better than the old 4Runner. Great video TK!
Luckily Toyota doesn’t run their business on everyone’s opinion. The one thing they know is the public will buy what they put out there, even if the introductory year is a rough one. 5th gen didn’t start off well in sales and it was not without issues….oh yeah, everyone was poised that the V8 wasn’t an option anymore. Hmmm…..look at how many people bought the only engine optioned V6??!! Now, here we go again, a 4 cylinder turbo…..guess what Toyota knows, we will buy it. At the end of the day, buy what you want, it’s your money…..nothing wrong with the 5th gen, and regardless of the first year of the 6th gen, there will be plenty of buyers.
Yeah you cant compare that to the new generation this time. The new ones are hybrid and turbo while the current ones were just downsized and so far the new engines are having more problems than ever. And yes i mean MORE RECALLS STATISTICALLY

I recently bought a 2024 TRD OR Premium. Bought it for the longtime reliability and its simplicity, and old school features such as the manual 4x4 shifter. It was also $10K cheaper than the TRD Pro.
Last week I dumped my 24 Tundra for this exact 4Runner and couldn’t be happier. Although there was a lot I liked about the Tundra I just didn’t feel confident with the reliability and longevity of the engine. Although mine wasn’t under recall yet, I’m sure that will be coming to all the 22,23, & 24 Tundras. I actually use my 4 WD vehicles on ocean beaches and on deep woods logging trails and would be screwed if my engine blew up. On another note the build quality of this 4Runner blows the build quality of the new Tundras and Tacomas away. My guess is the 6th gen 4Runner will also suffer in the build quality category as well. Yes it will be built in Japan but Toyota seems to have ‘cheaped out’ on all components. The plastics in the new Tundra couldn’t be any cheaper or thinner. The plastic which formed the base of my driver seat on the Tundra cracked twice and I weigh less than 200 lbs., come on Toyota, really? 🤦♂️
Mine cracked also on 24 tundra TRD pro. Have broken 2 volume control knobs and recently my back up camera dumped the calibration and had to be recalibrated to get the back up guides working. It has 9,000 miles on it. Going to go test drive a 4R tomorrow 24. For all the reasons listed.
you can argue off-road capabilities all day long with a bronco or wrangler but there is no arguing the 4Runner's uncontested reliability and re-sale value.
GOAT Topgun SUV. 🥇 Awesome review. Canadians are awesome 👍. Your prime minister rocks too. Topgun cool leader. I’d wait for the new 4Runner. More awesome tech and looks better. 🇨🇦 #1
The 4Runner is somewhat in a class by itself. Meaning, it doesn't do any one thing great, but does a lot of things really good. It is also a vehicle that if you keep up on maintenance could legitimately last your lifetime and/or pass down to your kids or grandkids. I'm right under 50 years old and I can't stand the 14" computer screens and computer gauge clusters that come on new cars. I don't want or need any of that crap. I'll take reliability and a vehicle that can go anywhere I need to go on and off road and I know it's going to get me home at the end of the day. If I could buy the new 6th gen for 10K less than the current 5th gen I'd still buy the 5th gen. I'm serious.
The 4Runner was always a vehicle that I wanted. I picked up a 23 TRD Off Road a month ago and despite the horrible fuel economy and anemic powertrain it's everything I wanted it to be. I absolutely love the thing. It has a charm to it that is difficult to describe and will be a a vehicle I keep as long a possible.
as a '17 TRD Off Road owner, your description of the powertrain is sadly dead on. I love the KDSS, the roll down rear window, but there are times where the engine/transmission make think '80s under-powered econobox and I am torn recommending it. Towing ? Painful choice. Need to pass someone while loaded for back country travel ? Plan it well. Will I change this reliable beast ? Hard to consider given the alternatives. I do recommend that people treat the undercarriage, say with lanolin, if you live in the salt belt. And if you have a TRD Off Road, exercise the 4L mechanism as often as you can on loose surface, otherwise it gets cranky. My transmission often won't get out of 4L in the normal manner, needing to stop in neutral, power off and then shift. When asked, I always mention how I wish the V8 had been an option on the 4Runner, my gut says it was built and sized for the larger engine.
@@stephanematis Your description is exactly why this and other Toyotas are such great trucks. The 4.0 is built for 385 hp but is tuned to 278. If it were tuned to make you happy with the power, it wouldn't last long. That is why other manufactures suck, they chase numbers and impressions, which in the long run are worth about as much as their used trucks.
@@stephanematishey buddy . That’s how it’s supposed to be put in and out of 4l you’re supposed to stop first and put the trans in neutral . It’s not cranky .
Toyota needs to go back to the previous engines. Definitely buy this year if you want one, if it's the new engines it'll be less reliable and most likely require a recall based on what's happening right now.
Not best vehicle. It’s awful on long trips. Braking is horrendous. Accidental safety is poor, prone to rot and rust. Sluggish power, awful transmission. Steering is floaty on highways.
It’s a death trap compared to modern safety standards. If that’s not a concern, or fuel econ, or ergonomics sure. Buy one. I’d just buy one used in that case though.
@@DJR33333It’s over a decade old design. Its crumple zones are weak and it was designed before small overlap test era. In a small overlap crash the driver’s legs are crushed by the dash. The new 4Runner I’m sure will address this issue.
The new Toyota trucks are JUNK, period, JUNK and I will never buy one of the new trucks with a Briggs and Stratton engine. I have a 2020 LC and 2022 4RNR TRD ORP and will keep these for a long time. The 5th generation 4RNRs will become Series 100/200 Land Cruiser status in a few years. Can you imagine putting a 4 cylinder turbo engine in a LC and now the same engine in a 4RNR? What in the "F" was Toyota thinking. They are putting out JUNK now.
I tend to be decisive but I'm planted squarely on the fence between the 2024 and 2025 4Runners. I've owned a couple of 4Runners (including a truly awful 4 cylinder in the early 1990's). I would wait for the 25 if it wasn't for the 4 cylinder even though it is a turbo. I'm thinking of longevity which is hard to imagine anywhere close to 5th Gen.
Great review as always. Refreshing video. Lots of channels are showing Tundra this and Taco that. A little oversatuated with bad news and model hoopla. This video begs the question of purists and loyalists and reliability versus buyers diving into the unknown. I don't think people will regret the choice if they buy this model right now. Keep up the great work TK
I forget I have 5 gears because the transmission doesn’t draw attention to itself. Hop in a friends 9 or 10 speed and there’s nothing but clunks and lurches.
It would be nice to have at least an extra gear to help with the gear ratios, especially when merging into ongoing traffic. When you press on the gas and expect it to downshift to give you more power, but it doesn’t, because it only has 5 gears lol.
My 4runner trd pro is my one and done daily driver. I’ll have other toys later on like an fl5 type r or maybe a Porsche, but for a stout daily driver tank… I think everyone should own a 4runner in there fleet lol.
Toyota has been doing some weird things lately... 1) the 5th gen 4Runner has more cargo space than the new Sequoia (by almost 3 cubic feet when all rear seats are folded down in both). 2) the styling of the new Tacoma is peak 1990s plastic transformer knockoff...the kind of thing you'd find on a messy toy isle at your local Kmart store. Can't believe I'm saying this, but for the first time ever, the Chevy Colorado is by far the best looking mid-sized truck in NA. 3) that "crease" on the sides of new Toyota's looks like the vehicle has already been t-boned. I get that BMW and Hyundai are pioneering that hip pre-crashed look, like brand new already ripped and worn jeans, or patina paint jobs), but Toyota needs to smooth some of these vehicles out. 5) the styling of the 6th gen 4Runner looks "thrown together at the last minute"...almost like the Land Cruiser was maybe supposed to replace the 4Runner until Toyota realized how crazy of a mistake that would be for their bank account. The front end is just "Tacoma" and the rear is just a 5th gen with new trim pieces to make it fit...they could have named it a "TacoRunner". 6) weird engine (Tundra) and transmission (Tacoma) issues that are just unlike Toyota to do...thankfully, unlike other manufacturers, Toyota is rushing to fix things instead of gaslighting customers (mostly, I think). I don't for one second think this is the end of all things Toyota, but I absolutely won't be rushing out to get any of these new vehicles anytime soon. My 5th gen 4Runner and me will sit this one out.
I’ve been building Toyota trucks for 15 years out here in Texas. Knowing what I seen from Toyota the last few years I knew I had to purchase this! 8/1/24 I bought this exact model at invoice plus 5625 down payment. My wife is in love with this beast and do not regret it one bit!
Toyota is having some tough times with the many new models..It’s growing pains. Toyota will actually fix it just give um time. They have always come through and supported their customers. They flew in an engineer to document a seat rattle on my 2013 tundra.
Buy the last true 4Runner before it is too late. These are built to last a lifetime. The NEW 2025 Turbo models will not be as good as 2024 models. It will definitely have teething issues.

I'm serious.
run and buy the last 2024 model one. I would have bought 4 if i had the money
This guys channel deserves more love and subscribers!
Truck king rocks
Buying my 2023 4Runner is still a great decision in my opinion. 0 trouble after 32,000 miles, only 1700 gallons of fuel. 😬😒
Don't sweat it. Plenty of cars on the road get worse than 18 mpg. It's smile per gallon for me. I have a 2023 TRD ORP.
@@timalan7406 I understand that, which is why I wish I had a de-tuned V8 as option.
@@stephanematis I do to, even a 3.5L v8 would be fine.
@@stephanematishey buddy . That’s how it’s supposed to be put in and out of 4l you’re supposed to stop first and put the trans in neutral . It’s not cranky .
Traded in my 22 SR5 tundra for a 24 ORP 4Runner and absolutely love the 4Runner. Might be my favorite vehicle I’ve owned
Toyota needs to go back to the previous engines. Definitely buy this year if you want one, if it's the new engines it'll be less reliable and most likely require a recall based on what's happening right now.
Turbos can overheat while offroading. Not great for that. Naturally aspirated and large displacement are much better for reliability and longevity
If I was in the market, this would be the 4Runner I would get. I wouldn’t wait for the new one.
Best vehicle sold in North America right now. The new Toyotas will be viewed like a typical domestic vehicle with all of their issues.
My 4Runner with KDSS drives great on the highway. Cruises comfortably at high speeds, good in mountains and altitude, no problems with power for me.
@@gs98999in regards to what? What modern safety features is it missing?
@@DJR33333It’s over a decade old design. Its crumple zones are weak and it was designed before small overlap test era. In a small overlap crash the driver’s legs are crushed by the dash. The new 4Runner I’m sure will address this issue.
I'm glad I have a v8 tundra.. the 22+ are terrible.
Saw one of these for the first time here in the UK. Great looking vehicle.
I secured a 24’ TRD offroad and its heavily protected 24/7 by cameras, drones, IED mine fields. 😮
This is enough tech already, new vehicles’ techs are ridiculous, need to go to school to learn them all😅😂
I tend to be decisive but I'm planted squarely on the fence between the 2024 and 2025 4Runners. I've owned a couple of 4Runners (including a truly awful 4 cylinder in the early 1990's). I would wait for the 25 if it wasn't for the 4 cylinder even though it is a turbo. I'm thinking of longevity which is hard to imagine anywhere close to 5th Gen.
The 5th gen will hold its value like gold in the years to come. The last of the N/A, Japan-made Toyota Truck.
The Car Care Nut loves the 5 speed transmission. States it is very smooth and reliable.
I would buy a 2024 Toyota 4Runner all day over a Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco.
old because it doesn't have a crappy 10 speed jerky trans
I'd sooner call the Jeep Grand Cherokee a competitor of the 4runner, not the wrangler.
The last TRULY reliable truck/suv Toyota still has.
Don't forget RAV 4 is still reliable but that's not really a truck.
This will outlast anything else that Toyota makes from 2025 & beyond.
Glad I picked up the same in this video 24 4Runner TRD Pro in Terra 3 months ago, best vehicle iv'e ever owned
Im actually pretty sad about this 😔
I’ve been building Toyota trucks for 15 years out here in Texas. Knowing what I seen from Toyota the last few years I knew I had to purchase this! 8/1/24 I bought this exact model at invoice plus 5625 down payment. My wife is in love with this beast and do not regret it one bit!
Love my ‘18 ORP. Keeping it till the wheels fall off
If you brake with 4-Runner, the nose dive is almost criminal.
My 4Runner with KDSS brakes fine.
Toyota is going through some stuff. Best get the old vehicles while they figure themselves out.
The 4Runner should be compared to the Grand Cherokee, not the Wrangler.
2023 4runner sr5 premium. Love it. Had 9 toyota trucks before it. I might have a problem.
Probably the best overall vehicle I had, moved to the updated Tacoma and what a mistake I made.
As we are seeing now the previous tundra, tacoma and 4runner are the only ones that are built with quality.
Its such a slug of a gas pig but I want one
Can you do a full review of the 2022 toyota sequoia. Couldn't find a video of you all doing that generation. Only the new one.
Since I bought my 23 TRD PRO, cousin of mine told me one thing if I take good care of this car you can see your grandson taking this car to the college one day 😀..
Got my 24 4 runner Trd Pro a month ago and couldn’t be happier and no regrets coming from a 23 Tacoma Pro ……what’s makes it even better was …it was paid for when I drove off the lot !! 🙏
