- This is a slideshow of photos and birdsong of the native birdlife on Tiritiri Matangi Island, an open sanctuary in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand.
It is an amazing place to see (and hear!) some of NZ's special and rare birdlife, especially the Kokako, one of the most hauntingly beautiful birds to listen to. Tiritiri Matangi and the middle of the Hunua Ranges are the only places near Auckland where you can hear them, if you are their early in the morning.
New Zealand's Sanctuaries help ensure the survival of many rare and endangered plant and animal species. Some of NZ's rarer birds - the Kokako, Saddleback, Takahe, North Island Robin, Stitchbird, Rifleman and many others have been introduced to Tiritiri Matangi Island.
Tiritiri's Lighthouse has guided ships into the gulf since 1865. It is now fully automated.
Recordings are from Radio New Zealand Archives. Not all photos have a birdcall recording, but have typical NZ bush birdsong. Have fun figuring out which ones have the right song with the photo.....

Hey these are really great! Thanks for putting them up. What did you use to record them?
Does anyone know bird makes that high-pitched noise in the background of the tui at 3.28?
Nicole Park sounded like there was a Kokako making the haunting organ noise. Might be a grey warbler
3:38 that's the latin name of the stitchbird; not the bellbird
