  • Dear Friends!
A Memorable First Day in Almaty
Our first day in Almaty was a blend of exploration, minor navigational challenges, and delightful discoveries. The excitement of experiencing a new city was palpable as we set off on our adventure.
Morning City View and Panfilov Park:
We began our day by hiring a cab and enjoying the scenic route through the city. The ride offered a captivating view of Almaty's unique blend of modern and Soviet-era architecture, all framed by the stunning Tien Shan mountains in the background. Our destination was Panfilov Park, a lush, green oasis named after the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen.
Upon arriving at Panfilov Park, we were greeted by towering trees and beautifully manicured gardens. The park’s serene atmosphere provided a perfect start to our day. We intended to visit the Zenkov Cathedral, known for its colorful wooden structure, but due to the language barrier and the unfamiliar location, we found ourselves unable to navigate to it.
Unplanned Visit to the Botanical Garden:
Our misadventure led us to the Almaty Botanical Garden instead. This was an unplanned but pleasant surprise. The garden, with its diverse collection of flora and elegant fountains, was a peaceful retreat. We strolled through its pathways, taking in the beauty of the various plants and the meticulously maintained landscape.
Panfilov Walking Street and Almaty Hotel:
Realizing we had drifted from our initial plan, we decided to head towards Panfilov Walking Street. Our journey took us past the historic Almaty Hotel, a landmark that adds a touch of old-world charm to the city’s modern facade. As we walked, we noticed large artificial apples placed throughout the street, a playful nod to Almaty's historical connection to apples. The city’s name itself is derived from the Kazakh word for apple, and these installations reminded us of this unique heritage.
    Lunch Break:
We paused for lunch at a cozy café along Panfilov Walking Street. The menu offered a mix of traditional Kazakh dishes and international cuisine. We enjoyed a delicious meal, sampling local favorites like beshbarmak and shashlik, accompanied by fresh salads and pastries. The flavors were rich and satisfying, providing much-needed energy for the rest of our day.
    Return to the Botanical Garden:
After lunch, we decided to revisit the Botanical Garden. This time, we took a more leisurely approach, finding a shaded bench to rest and soak in the tranquil surroundings. The garden’s serene environment was the perfect place to recharge. Ayush, ever the tech enthusiast, decided to fly his drone. The aerial view of the Botanical Garden, with its meticulously maintained pathways and vibrant plant life, was nothing short of breathtaking.
    Coffee Break:
Feeling refreshed, we proceeded to a nearby café for a coffee break.
    City Impressions:
Throughout the day, we were consistently impressed by Almaty’s efficient traffic management and the cleanliness of its streets. The well-maintained roads and the diligent efforts of the city’s municipal authorities were evident everywhere we went. The orderly flow of traffic, courteous drivers, and pristine public spaces added to our overall positive experience.
    Conclusion:
Despite the initial navigational challenges and language barrier, our first day in Almaty was a wonderful introduction to this vibrant city. From the serene beauty of Panfilov Park and the unexpected charm of the Botanical Garden to the lively energy of Panfilov Walking Street and the playful apple installations, each experience was a memorable part of our journey. The city’s impressive management and maintenance further enhanced our admiration for Almaty, making the first half of our day both tiring and explorative, yet incredibly rewarding.
