McCoy Stadium has been used as a COVID-19 testing site for the last two years. I’d gone to so many games there as a kid and had so many fun times there. As an adult, having to go there weekly to get tested during the grimmest days of the pandemic was beyond depressing.
I grew up going there too. The future of that stadium was doomed as soon as Ben Mondor passed away. No other ownership group was going to deal with the money pit that is maintaining that stadium.
I was raised in Portsmouth RI and McCoy was MY place to go in the 80s... I drove there back in Oct for the first time in 25 yrs and many emotions ...I remember all the artwork of former members on the wall too...I'm in Gatlinburg Tennessee Great Smoky mountains Park now ..I'm so glad this video popped up...I'm on TH-cam The Gatlinburg Hussey if you'd like to see the town I'm in now
I'm just glad North Wilkesboro Speedway dodged this list. One of the oldest oval tracks in the United States, and has been defunct since 1996, but thanks to the efforts of locals, it's being restored and will host racing late this year.
Regarding the Coliseum, something similar happened with the pyramids of Giza. They used to be covered in a smooth white limestone layer topper by a golden capstone, making them gleam in the sun. But the limestone was removed for other construction projects after the Egyptian dynasties finally fell, leaving them in their present state.
I know that the focus of FPV is sports, but he could do a video more or less in this subject, regarding great constructions of the past/archelogical treasures that were target of theft by other countries or by other individuals that sold the stuff to institutions or collectors. There has been a movement by some of this countries to recover the parts. Like: Greece is trying to recover parts of the Pathernon (I think) from England. My homecountry of Brazil just recovered 400+ fossils from France
Breaks my heart to see these once mighty titans of the sporting world just sitting abandoned, like the Astrodome and RFK Stadium. Keep up the great vids, Five.
Thanks for including the Akron Rubber Bowl. I grew up about 15 miles from there and seen many great high school, and Zip teams win there. Oh ya, also seen a group called the Rolling Stones play there. It butts right up to the Soap Box Derby and the famous Goodyear Air Dock where all the great blimps were and still are built.
Another track worth mentioning: The bobsleigh and luge track in Sarajevo. It was built for the 1984 Winter Olympics and held, of course, bobsleigh and luge events at the games. While it did see use in the immediate few years after the games the Yugoslav Wars put a halt to it especially since Sarajevo was devastated from the war. The track itself was even used as an artillery position. It has since been abandoned, though there have been discussions with regards to renovating/rebuilding it.
I’m so glad/sad you included Fair Grounds Field in Shreveport. I attended many Captains games growing up in the ‘90s. It was fun because it was geared toward family fun while there were future MLB stars like Rich Aurilia, John Burkett, and Joe Nathan on that field. Unfortunately, it’s a mirror of Shreveport’s traumatic fall from grace and a reminder of what it could have been in music and sporting entertainment due to political corruption and bad backroom deals.
Huntsville, AL, is renovating the abandoned stadium where the Huntsville Stars (baseball) played. It also being reconfigured to host high school football and soccer. There's hope that we'll get a USL team.
My hometown had two abandoned soccer stadiums. This is a "complicated" thing to explain here in Brazil, because the clubs from the majority of the major towns have their own, in general smaller stadiums, but every major city have a bigger stadium. Like "one coliseum every town". In a U.S adapted reality would be colleges having their own, smaller stadiums but hosting big schools on NFL stadiums, if the later were owned by the city or state and did not possess any element allusive to the club, like colors or chairs with the wordmark or symbol on it. Estádio Antônio Accioly is the home of the club my grandpa (and almost every grandpa in town) supports (Atlético), and was left in desrepair in the late 90's, early 2000's. The club was completely broken, in the second division of the state league (we have state leagues and the national league), without a title for 15 years and almost sold the area for a company to build a mall (the stadium is located in a major business area, to which the club and it's fanbase is much attached to). They renovated it on a campaign in 2005, won the 2nd division of the state league, came back to the first in 2006 being runner up in the championship. Ever since they did enough to earn a spot in the first division of the national league, the stadium, once small and cramped (like 3-4 thousand capacity), was expanded to a capacity of 12k and even hosted it's first international game in this current season. Estádio Olímpico was once the town's major venue. Right on city center of the state capital regarded as the heart of our country, on one of the most recognized intersections we have in town, was built pretty much along with it in the late 1930's, early 40's. Received many historical games with all the clubs of the city, even the most historical and folklorical state league final we ever had (IMO) between the two major fanbases in our state (Goiás and Vila Nova), a game that took, among power outages, fights and a penalty shoot-out well over 5 hours - a regular soccer game lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes counting halftime - according to the people that witnessed it. It's glory days ended when the Serra Dourada, a true concrete monster, was opened in 1975, and it was a true wonder of it's day. The olimpico received some minor games from there until 2007, when it was closed and demolished for the state to build a center of sports excellence that included a new stadium, a work that took 10+ years to be completed due to major corruption problems and a gangster state governor that was elected 4 times and is trying for a 5th non consecutive term. Since the rebuilding it hosted the state league final again once and hosted Atlético in part of their title winning season in the 2nd national division, with some games hosted before the rona when we had scheduling conflicts in other stadia in town
Having part of your stadium support a boulevard seems like a devious way to make sure your stadium always gets public funding. "Sure would be a shame if the stadium didn't get renovated. You wouldn't want the street to collapse would you? Better vote for that budget increase then"
Hey Five, if you do another Baseball stadium vid, could you include Historic Duncan Park? Duncan Park is located in Spartanburg, SC. Opened in 1926, it is one of the oldest ballparks in the country and has a storied history as well. The park also houses seats from Shibe. It was added to the NRHP in 2016 and it is still operating. Although, it is closed currently for renovations.
He could also add College park in Charleston it’s a very historic park as well Elvis held a concert there and all the greats like Hank Aaron Babe Ruth Roberto Clemente all played there. It houses seats from Griffith stadium

I've also been to RFK Stadium in Washington DC. Hurts me to see such a historic stadium like that falling apart. It once held the most consecutive sell out crowds record in the NFL history. I will never call the Washington's nfl team the Commanders. They will always be the Redskins to me forever.
Fun fact:the access road to Akron Rubber Bowl was actually used for sanctioned drag racing events in the 1950s. My dad used to watch them race a kid. And my father-in-law saw the rolling stones there in 72. Stevie wonder opened for them.
Can't believe FPV didn't mention that McCoy stadium hosted the longest baseball game ever played (he did show the big box score inside the stadium though)
Worcester (Wuh stuh) yes we have the Woo Sox and it’s pronounced Woo just don’t think about it too hard. Sometimes it’s pronounced Wuh Sta it depends on if you live in the city or outside of it.
Hoop Crap! I’m so happy that you mentioned Fair Grounds in Shreveport. Even though it’s been sitting in disrepair, that stadium is still one of the biggest “monuments” of the area along with Hirsch Coliseum and the newly renamed Brookshire’s Grocery Arena. I love these videos Don’t forget braves field in Boston It’s now Nickerson field and used daily by Boston university and league park in Cleveland The stands are long gone but the field is still there and used by many amateur teams
I was there at the Rubber Bowl for their last game. The Zips came back from a 4 touchdown deficit in the 2nd half for the comeback win. Fans flooded the field. Storybook ending.
I went to the Rubber Stadium (Akron's Abandoned stadium) in Nov 2021. I took a lot of photos there and the amount of nature reclamation of the stadium is awesome.
I played in the rubber bowl in late 80s. It was cement with a thin piece of astoturf over it. No padding. It was a super fast turf but caused a lot of injuries.
Hey Five did you know when they knocked down the Old Giants and Jets stadium, they put up the chairs for sale online? I snagged 2 for 300 bucks. Now I'll forever have a piece of history
If they can get the name Intimidator back to an abandon ballpark, then I guess Teresa Earnhardt aka The Wicked Witch of the South can't keep everything she sues to keep the Earnhardt name despite married into the name.
Old Columbus clipper stadium should be on this list. Rotting into the ground. Also notable, that (it’s believed) when build the team had to pick and choose where to put their money. So the bathrooms stalls were only 1/3 height. When you would walk in you would just see people on the can lol
6:22. I live in Columbia. When I worked for the City I used to drive by Capitol City Stadium everyday in my work truck. And yes indeed it looks very rough.
RFK should be torn down and have a new facility built for Washington Redacted there. would be better than FedEx and has a metro station nearby so people can get to it.
Saw the Rubber Bowl on the thumbnail. I go to the University of Akron and I’ve been inside the bowl itself. Would have been great to catch a game there!
I saw the Kent State Golden Flashes win there, as well as Massillon v McKinley and Massillon v Walsh Jesuit, both in the playoffs. Ozzy, Megadeth and Tool one time too. That place actually sucked pretty bad, tbh.
The Rubber Bowl really wasn't a good place to watch a game. The light posts could block the views and those fiberglass bleachers! Makes my butt itch just remembering them!
Kwame didn't do anything too. He shot down all proposals as well as City Council. So much history and all that remains from the site is the flag pole and a whole new ballpark
@@orlandofields1973 Exactly my dude, they could of done some cool stuff with the site.. but at least tear it down. Depressing driving down Turnbull and just seeing it there. Shame
I graduated from University of Akron in 2010 and went to like one or 2 games in the Rubber Bowl and freaking hated every minute of it. Also, didn’t help that our football team was trash after winning the conference the season before I enrolled lol
Looking at the Rubber Bowl, I'm not entirely sold on the idea that they couldn't drive sheet piles in between the edge of the stadium and the boulevard to prop it up long enough to allow for the demolition of the stadium and the subsequent construction of an embankment to stabilize the road afterward. I'm sure someone who actually finished their engineering degree will come along and explain why that won't work, though.
@@michaelmillefanti6319 That could be prohibitively expensive. There may also be a certain standard the material may have to meet to be used as fill, and depending on that standard it would have to be sloped a certain way to fill in the stadium. And there could also be issues that arise from how the buried portions of the stadium shift as they rot underground. Not ideal when it's butted up against a road.
LaGrange Stadium in Fort Worth, TX is also a really good one. Theres constantly movements to restore it, but it'll likely never happen due to ownership conflicts and soil conditions. Absolutely insane list of hall of famers that have played there. Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, AL is also a good one that has had more failed renovation plans than the O.Co. Former home of names like Jason Giambi, Prince Fielder, the Canseco Brothers, and many other great ballplayers that sits empty
Fun fact about McCoy Stadium: It hosted the longest game in professional baseball history between Pawtucket & Rochester in 1981 which lasted 33 innings & had to be completed two days after the 32nd inning finished due to fears about injury.
The one that hurts the most is McCoy Stadium. My best memories with my Dad were in that stadium. I feel like I got robbed I wanted to see one more game, but the pandemic ruined it. 😔
Another interesting abandoned stadium is the old Miami Marine Stadium in Florida. It was built in 1963 for powerboat racing and was used up until Hurricane Andrew made it structurally unsafe in 1992.
It’s sad to see McCoy on this list… I was pissed when I heard the PawSox were moving to Worcester, cuz now instead of a 45 minute ride to the ballpark, I’ll have to drive over an hour
The abandoned ground of Stand Athletic is somewhere i know. Its in Greater Manchester. The English county i live. Its right next to onw of the UK's premiere Heritage Railways. Thats the East Lancashire Railway. The ground was abandoned when the nearby River Irwell flooded forcing the club to move out. The cost of repairing the ground was so high that the club folded eventually and now the ground now lays abandoned and being reclaimed by nature.
Ayeee Shreveport made it on here 😎 But honestly, it’s kinda sad to see Fair Grounds rot, especially since the city council just absolutely hates any sort of growth that costs money here (we were even slated to get a whole g-league team here that they shot down)
You should look at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth. Once the proud home of the Fort Worth Cats. The city of Fort Worth has neglected it since the team folded in 2014, claiming they don’t care about sports…then they built Dickies Arena…
Fun fact: Intimidator Stadium and the Kannapolis Intimidators were both named after Kannapolis native and 7-Time NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Dale Earnhardt Sr., who’s most widely used nickname was “The Intimidator”.
The Rubber Bowl was such a unique and cool place. I wish I had been able to see a game there, or even better, have gotten to play there. MACtion is highly underrated sport.
You might want to check out Potter County Memorial Stadium in Amarillo, Texas. It was built in 1948 at the Tri-State Fairgrounds, hosted a number of different minor league teams (none higher than Double-A), and was replaced by a new stadium downtown (home to the Sod Poodles. Yes. The Sod Poodles). ANY-way, the stadium hasn't been in use since 2016, and it just sits there, falling to pieces.
There’s an abandoned minor league baseball stadium in Canton, OH. Kinda surprised it wasn’t on this list granted the Rubber Bowl is more well known here in Northeast Ohio.
Intimidators Stadium was so poorly and oddly designed. All of the suites, bathrooms, and press box were on the first base side. There was no awning at all, meaning there was no way to escape the heat and thunderstorms. The old ballpark is slated to be rezoned as an industrial site. The new park in downtown Kannapolis is a gem.
Fair Grounds Field is always so sad to see when I drive by. I saw my first baseball game there in a packed ballpark. Now I drive by it on the way to our local hockey teams arena which is on the other side of the parking lot. Up until it closed it was actually a really nice place to watch a game. It had a beer garden down the third base line and a children's play area down the 1st base line. Its being torn down soon.
WHOA...props to you dude for adding Capital City Stadium. I was hoping you'd mention it. I drive by it every day thinking..."what a waste". They could renovate it and have high school or amateur baseball there, concerts etc. You forgot to mention Hank Aaron played here as a Jacksonville Brave back in the 50's. He threw out the first pitch in 2013. The trouble with this area, is that it's prone to flooding, so I can't see any retail space going there. Just hope Columbia does something with it soon!
The baseball stadium in Shreveport, LA I went there for a Shreveport Captains game with my grandparents in the late 80's. It was a pretty decent stadium for back then.
I think they've finally started tearing down Intimidators Stadium here in Kannapolis. The new downtown ballpark they moved to (Atrium Health Ballpark) is really nice, probably one of the best new parks in single-A minor league. They also changed the team name from the Intimidators (which was named after Dale Earnhardt, who had a financial stake in the team that passed on to his wife Teresa when he died); when someone else bought the team she kept the rights to the name, so now they're the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers. The "Cannon" refers to the Cannon family that first built the town as an employee town for their textile mill here in 1908.
Drove by Fair Grounds Field on a cross country trip. Thanks for the background infromation, as I thought it looked very neglected at this point, sitting in the middle of a currently used facility.
If you do another one of these, you just have to mention Lake Olmstead Stadium, the old home of the Augusta Greenjackets. They left after 2017 (I believe) and moved to North Augusta leaving behind a sad, decaying stadium. They tried to turn it into a concert venue and we’re halfway through completion only to find out that the ground was too soft and unstable to hold the buildings/stages/seating that had put up. The issue is that they can’t take it apart because the ground can’t support the heavy machinery needed to demolish it. Gotta love good ol’ disgusta.
I've just started watching these videos by FivePoints Vids and I believe that I really enjoy them because the narrator sounds almost like the late TV presenter Huell Howser. :) :) :) :)
Was hoping it may have made the list, but there’s an abandoned stadium close to home for me! Fielders Stadium in Zion, IL was an 8,000 seat baseball field that hosted the Lake County Fielders for a grand total of 2 seasons. There were two failed attempts to put permanent concourse and proper facilities in, and the project was scrapped as were the Fielders. Now it just sits there.
fun fact: Kannapolis Intimidators was once owned by Nascar Hall-of-Famer Dale Earnhardt Sr (who's son Dale jr. joined the Nascar Hall-Of-Fame 13 years later). I guess that's why the Earnhardt Family were running the Baseball Franchise and Stadium during Dale Sr.'s Nascar career at that time, btw.

Old Columbus clipper stadium should be on this list. Rotting into the ground. Also notable, that (it’s believed) when build the team had to pick and choose where to put their money. So the bathrooms stalls were only 1/3 height. When you would walk in you would just see people on the can lol
The World Cup hosts have way too many to count, especially after this years World Cup in Qatar
3:50 - "We all love beach volleyball... for reasons."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Beijing gave up on their beach volleyball venue because they don't welcome competitors with sun-darkened skin. And that is a fact.
6:22. I live in Columbia. When I worked for the City I used to drive by Capitol City Stadium everyday in my work truck. And yes indeed it looks very rough.
I work for the university. I drive by it every day. Saddest thing I've ever seen.
RFK should be torn down and have a new facility built for Washington Redacted there. would be better than FedEx and has a metro station nearby so people can get to it.
7:31 What exactly is being censored here?
I remember going to McCoy stadium for pawsox games, it was so fun. It’s just sad to see it in this state
Saw the Rubber Bowl on the thumbnail.
Greece hosted in 2004, not 2014
My mind immediately goes to Tiger Stadium.. they let the goddamn thing sit there and rot for 10 years. Despicable.
Shame
@@NOT_Brian It hurts even more to see the revitalization going on down there to. To think if it stayed, it could've been renovated. We can only dream
I feel like abandoned malls would be perfect for this type of video. Super interesting!!!
Mccoy was my childhood
NASCAR should make intimidator stadium into a Short track. It’s in kannapolis and is named for Earnhardt for crying out loud
I graduated from University of Akron in 2010 and went to like one or 2 games in the Rubber Bowl and freaking hated every minute of it. Also, didn’t help that our football team was trash after winning the conference the season before I enrolled lol
As someone who drives by Fairgrounds fields all the time, it's definitely a scary sight. Looks like a war zone in there man.
Awesome Video! I live in Shreveport, Louisiana and going past Fairgrounds Field is just as depressing as it looks, no joke.
Thanks!!!
I was fortunate enough to play in the Rubber Bowl from 97 to 2000 playing for Akron East High.
I wondering why not just fill the whole thing in with dirt and gravel
Thank god another FPV vid
Fun fact about McCoy Stadium: It hosted the longest game in professional baseball history between Pawtucket & Rochester in 1981 which lasted 33 innings & had to be completed two days after the 32nd inning finished due to fears about injury.
The one that hurts the most is McCoy Stadium. My best memories with my Dad were in that stadium. I feel like I got robbed I wanted to see one more game, but the pandemic ruined it. 😔
Herndon stadium in Atlanta is within spitting distance of Mercedes and is completely in disrepair.
the rubber bowl was awesome
Thats so Ohio that the old Akron Zips stadium LITERALLY holds up the highway road behind it!!!
Another interesting abandoned stadium is the old Miami Marine Stadium in Florida. It was built in 1963 for powerboat racing and was used up until Hurricane Andrew made it structurally unsafe in 1992.
What does Ric Flair wear on his feet?
WooSox!
Great video, I love seeing the history behind some of these different stadiums! 🏟 🏈⚾️
I hope McCoy can hold on until expansion. Pretty sure you can slot an Eastern League (AA for the uninitiated)team in there.
Ayeee Shreveport made it on here 😎
But honestly, it’s kinda sad to see Fair Grounds rot, especially since the city council just absolutely hates any sort of growth that costs money here (we were even slated to get a whole g-league team here that they shot down)
You should look at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth. Once the proud home of the Fort Worth Cats. The city of Fort Worth has neglected it since the team folded in 2014, claiming they don’t care about sports…then they built Dickies Arena…
Fun fact: Intimidator Stadium and the Kannapolis Intimidators were both named after Kannapolis native and 7-Time NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Dale Earnhardt Sr., who’s most widely used nickname was “The Intimidator”.
we know. Sad they got rid of the team.
Low key you could make a video just on venues from the 2004 and 2016 summer Olympic venues.
The Rubber Bowl was such a unique and cool place. I wish I had been able to see a game there, or even better, have gotten to play there. MACtion is highly underrated sport.
I went there and watched a game there back in the 90's.
During my 8th grade trip to DC, I was able to see RFK from the metro. Benning Road to Stadium-Armoury is the jump you can see it from
One of the first videos I watched on the channel was seeing the abandoned stadiums that you uploaded the first time
There’s an abandoned minor league baseball stadium in Canton, OH. Kinda surprised it wasn’t on this list granted the Rubber Bowl is more well known here in Northeast Ohio.
Canton-Akron Indians at Thurman Munson Stadium!
@@HandsOfSweed yep!
Intimidator stadium is named after NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, as he was born and raised in Kannapolis, NC.
It’s so sad how many teams have come and gone in the area. Battlewings, Captains, and then the said local hockey team for around 5 years.
If the Phoenix Coliseum isn’t on here I’m going to be upset.
Jesus... That dissonant version of London Bridge's Falling Down had me rolling. 🤣
I live here and it's crazy how bad this place is. And it's right next to the arena where our local hockey team plays.
Thank you for posting the video clip.
Gotta love good ol’ disgusta.
another great video ..
I've just started watching these videos by FivePoints Vids and I believe that I really enjoy them because the narrator sounds almost like the late TV presenter Huell Howser. :) :) :) :)
Just found this and it’s great
5:11 Okay, so that Fair Grounds Field looks so eerie. Maybe it is just the feeling. That evening recording of an old media room is quite spooky..
The interior of some of these places looks like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre is about to bust out. Nooooo thanks.
I guess that's why the Earnhardt Family were running the Baseball Franchise and Stadium during Dale Sr.'s Nascar career at that time, btw.
as someone from massachusetts, the way he pronounced worcester triggered me
Five I have another for you. In Baltimore between the airport and city limits I saw this massive stadium. The stadium had no signs on it, but it was covered entirely in moss. It looked pretty cool for the split 3 minutes I saw of it
Could you be a bit more specific on where it's at? Do you recall from what direction of the airport you found it?
@@DepravedCoTApologist on the way to DC. So south
@@steffanyschwartz7801 Thanks
Next time you do one of these, check out El Paso, Texas. Dudley field and Cohen stadium! Cohen was retired and dismantled before it was 30!
I've been to both minor league parks in Pawtucket, RI and Shreveport, LA.
