You did the right thing in getting that orchid safe house. By the way I see allot of cranberry and yellow! 🥰 That anosmum is a dream. Jeremy has the best anosmum hands down. Enjoy the orchid shows. 🎉

Yes I had to finally do something. I couldn’t stand it anymore, seeing one spike after another just disappear 😑 I totally agree, Jeremy has amazing honohonos and the judges at the Kunia show agree because it won two awards, Best Honohono in Show and judges choice 💕

That happened to me. This bulbul bird was hanging around and ate my cattleya bud. I was so upset because I was waiting for it to open and the next morning it was gone. Someone told me to hang a CD, birds don’t like the glare. So, I did, and it’s working for me. Try it, it won’t hurt. I’m glad you’re back 💕

The CDs is a great idea. Bird do not like shimmery mowing things. Also you can try strips of old tape hanging near the orchids.

Aloha! I’m reading everyone’s comments and realize we all have our struggles. I definitely understand how you felt when you noticed your bud was gone, especially when you were waiting for it to open 😞 Definitely not a good feeling! But I’ll try the cds, I’m glad it works for you and since that’s the same kind of birds I’m seeing in my garden, hopefully it’ll work for me too. Mahalo for sharing your experience with me 🤙🏽

Here in Australia we keep our orchids in a shade house or bush house. They are covered in shadecloth & the orchids love the protected environment.

I had bird problems as they were eating roots really set back a few of my orchids. I had a mocking bird family from what I noticed it was the young birds doing the most damage they were trying to get bugs off the plants but weren’t skilled at it and caused all sort of problems. A cat would be a good option also I have heard shiny moving things birds don’t like 🤷‍♀️. Glad to see you back and have fun at the shows 🤗

Thank you for sharing your collection. We have possums that come into the yard and tip the pots over ruining the plants. They are so fat that they don't need to eat the orchids for food, just being little sh!ts. Also, bush turkeys that scratch around and mess up the garden. Your plants look healthy otherwise and the waterfall lavender dendrobium is stunning. Keep going Kelly, your collection needs you and when you receive a surprise flowering, it's all worth it 🥳

I took Nel and Mercedes advice and used Sevin insecticide and it works! My orchids are in the sun and are outside. They are attacked by snails, aphids, and other pests. It works. Be vigilant as these plants are amazing.

Aloha! I’m sorry for the late reply. I’m not sure why but sometimes it doesn’t show everyone’s comments on my phone. But I’m glad the Sevin has been working for you. I too have been using it more frequently after Nelson told me that it’s okay to spray it on the same plant several times a week. I’m now getting some beautiful blooms and couldn’t be happier 😊 Happy growing 💚

the gold dust day gecko has been known to eat orchid flowers/buds, especially if their isn't a wide variety of nectar type flowers around. they are not their first choice though. and yes birds unfortunately. its got to be so frustrating for you. but don't let those little bugga's get you down. check with a nursery to see if there is something you can sprinkle around your garden to chase them away or maybe putting out bird feeders will help solve it so they have something to feast on and won't see the buds as seeds/food. i know it is hard to build a larger sized screened in garden lanai or greenhouse with screen instead of windows, especially in hawaii because space is limited. hope you find a solution overall. thank you for sharing.

I have a lot of those in my garden and I’ve always enjoyed seeing them because of their pretty colors. But now that I know they eat orchid buds, I’m not so happy anymore 🤦‍♀️ I wish I had the space to build a shade house but unfortunately most of us here can barely afford to buy a house, let alone one with a big yard. Sad reality of living in paradise. I’ll definitely try some things to keep away the birds and now that I know about the geckos, I’m thinking I’ll have my husband make at least one more screened in shelf.

When I had my palm trees with orchids on them, I had squirrels eating them, very frustrating. I don’t have my palms anymore, IAN took care of that. I to lose some buds that just fall off, I was thinking thripes🤷‍♀️. Don’t know if this will work, but how about a wind sock, with it flying it might scare them. My hono hono didn’t do well either, only a few flowers, but yours is gorgeous. Looking forward to your videos, take care💖💖💖

I guess we’ll always have challenges when we grow our orchids outdoors. Reading everyone’s comments made me realize that I’m not the only one who’s been struggling. I was thinking of trying to hang some old cds around my garden, I’ve seen some of the nurseries do that but I’m sure a wind sock would look much prettier in my garden. Mahalo for the suggestion Linda 🤙🏽

if you are thinking of content, maybe also doing home visits? seeing others orchid collections and how they handle pest situations and keep and grow their orchids, might be something you could add, if you are looking for content ideas. just a suggestion.

Aloha! Yes I have tried to ask people if they’d like to share their collection with the TH-cam world but so far, most people are very protective. But I’ll keep asking lol, I’m sure eventually I’ll find someone. In the meantime I plan on doing more orchid care videos. When I first started, I often turned to TH-cam for help whenever I was having issues. Now that I have my own channel, I can at least return the favor lol Mahalo for watching and taking the time to leave me a comment 🤙🏽
