Mark Zabel It’s in that very short list of solos that are as memorable as the song itself. See ‘Something’ by The Beatles and ‘Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)’ by Pink Floyd.
Here I am thinking I'm late to the party...but I thought the same thing. Makes so much more sense when you can see the chords that are involved. I'll be working on this for the next little bit. Now to get my gal to sing it.@@MarkZabel
Thanks Mark for this, I remember playing this before but the way you explained it as being played over the chords has made this alot easier to understand, superb!
Amazing! This is probably my favorite Pretenders song ... maybe ... and I absolutely love the guitar work in it. No flash, just perfect for the song. It was a true loss when he died.
@@MarkZabel Thanks, Mark. For some reason, I have been on a Pretenders binge, and even though I have quite a few Pretenders albums, my appreciation for Chrissie Hynde's songwriting has reached an even higher level than previously. Lyrically and melodically, Chrissie is up there.
Hey Mark, caught this a bit earlier, thanks for the lesson, always appreciated, you always pick great songs we remember and relate to and break down riffs & intros clearly so we can play/ follow along with the clip's! That's what makes you the perfect teacher! 💯🎸⚡love Kris IL

Thanks for the great lesson! I remember a long time ago, either hearing a radio interview or a magazine article that JHS lifted the opening riff to “Kid” from a Benny Goodman or Glenn Miller tune. Idk if it was Indian Sunset or something like that? I always have loved this song and is my all time favorite guitar solo.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching! That's really interesting to me (about the riff). I totally agree that this solo and guitar word is absolutely masterful. Its note choice and cadence is perfect and clearly took a great deal of work to craft. It's not difficult to play, but that's hardly the point of music, right? In fact, this song is one of their best; musically, lyrically, and with a great performance and recording. Thanks again for your comment!
LOL! Yeah, I needed to trim it a bit though. They were thinking I was headed for retirement at work! BTW, I agree. I *LOVE* the solo that JHS plays here. Fits the song perfectly.
Thank you for posting this lesson, Mark! Greatly appreciate. James H. is such a great player and I believe a little underrated. Such a Great Band. This song is next on the list :)
You're very welcome! I couldn't agree more about JHS. He was kind of lost in the "guitar arms race" because he didn't try to out-gun anyone. This solo is a great example of playing what's right for the song. Shades of Nowhere Man in this one.
@@MarkZabel Very true Mark! He was a class act of a guitarist. This band is one of the greats for learning a great foundation of music. Peace and hope all is well. Robert
THE HONEY BEAR!!! James Honeyman-Scott is one of my top three favorites. Excellent lesson as always Mark. How about something from Robbie Blunt from his stint with Robert Plant please? Like I've Never Been Gone, for instance...You could do worse than Richard Lloyd too
Yeah JHC was great for sure. I like the song Like I've Never Been Gone. I could do something on that, though I'm a little concerned about copyright with any Zep member. I'm not familiar with Richard Lloyd's work. Maybe you could suggest a few to listen to.
Simple solos are often the best! This is one of them. Totally makes the song better IMHO. Love the song "Look Out Cleveland." Haven't posted a lesson on it.
sometime can you take a shot perhaps at show me..so many of that is nowhere to be found it off I cannot find tabs I could not find how to play it and I love that song.. watching some vintage of course JHS he definitely had that Rickenbacker in full jangle mode on so many Great pretenders.. and Chrissie had that tele rocking away
Hi Trucker Kev! I'm not sure what you're asking. I do show how to play the solo right here in this video. I didn't give the tab, but I show it note for note. I just checked Ultimate Guitar and there's a decent tab there. If you're asking for something else (a different song maybe?), please let me know. Yes, JHS was great and really worked well with the whole band. The Pretenders really stood out during that era. Such a shame he died.
@@MarkZabel Yes..Show Me the song..a forgotten gem it's from learning to crawl... the album with out James.. but just throwing it out there is another unique pretenders song
@@truckerkevthepaidtourist Okay, got it! "Show Me" the Pretenders song. Yeah, great sound on that song. Plus the guitar work at the end is so good. That would be a fun one to do!
@@MarkZabel yeah that's the one! they kind of stepped out of the boundaries there a little bit from the norm on that cut it's just really unique and it flows so cool...I know it was picking up after honeyman-scott passing but you know it was showing though that they could continue on and as far as I'm concerned learning to crawl is a solid album...but yet you look for tabs you look for anything and you just can't find nothing on that song and that's one of the ones in the pretenders catalog that I wish somebody would give a shot at...
Thanks Mike! This one didn't take many takes. I actually nailed it on the first take (doesn't usually happen), but the recording wasn't right. I think the actual take number on this one was 3. Oddly, sometimes the easier ones require more takes. I remember doing a ton of takes on China Grove. Each of the verses and choruses were similar, but not quite the same, so I would forget. Over time it seems I do more takes than I used to, tweaking the mic settings and amp settings or thinking, "I could get it just a little better next time." The funny thing is that I often end up picking early takes. Maybe it has to do with energy level. In any event ... thought provoking question!
@@MarkZabel Thanks Mark - you look so fluid playing I was wondering if you just pull the guitar out and nail it in one take! I agree about the easy ones - I'll practice something to death and have it down 100% until I hit the record button on the DAW then all bets are off!
Hey Mark. Still can't find your guitars on Reverb. Put in Mark z'guitars and got nothing. I would love to see them in Hope's of purching one played by the King.
Thanks Ron! Here's the link: reverb.com/shop/mark-zs-gear I'm going to be putting up a couple more in the next week, so if these don't strike your fancy, maybe another one will.

LOL! As long as we don't go into the whole "bowlful of jelly" thing I'm cool with that. Who doesn't like Santa, and he can rip some mean North Pole riffs!
My favourite guitar solo of all time. It’s short, melodic, memorable and perfect.
I love it too!

Okay. Cool song. Nice solo. I'm not going to play it in front of an on-rushing train though!! Thanks Jess!
The solo is sort of Country Western. He borrowed Chrissie Hynde's Telecaster to record it.
it's my belief that JHS plays the harmonic on the 5th fret at the end of the solo
Yeah, probably right. Especially seeing this solo is so inspired by the solo to Nowhere Man.
