Standing room only in the ATL when Black was in. Rolling on the floor funny. And educational. Just an amazing person. So much integrity. Now that would have been crazy funny, Phyllis as Pookie. Phyllis is Telling The Truth. Martin was supposed to be Pookie, but after Robin Harris--his mentor--passed away without warning, they gave it to Chris Rock. Chris did a Phenomenal job as Pookie. After Phyllis' audition (and she actually did read for Pookie at the Burbank auditions, and she nailed it, but George and Doug wanted a male to play Pookie) at the Jackson/McHenry bungalow on the Warner Bros Lot in Burbank, I told George Jackson (GOD Rest his soul), that they needed to find a role for Ms. Stickney, because not only her comedic chops, but her acting chops were (and still are) off the Richter scale. Her performance as Attorney Hawkins in New Jack City is memorable, because of her phenomenal skill as an actress.

Putting the whole "sex for jobs" culture aside (which is a toxic culture that should DIE), and as brilliant as Phyllis is, industries operate on relationships. You hire a manager and/or agent to represent you because they have established relationships with the right people which can lead to you - the talent - get more opportunities to work and be seen. Eventually, you build your own relationships and can be that conduit for other people. That said, I'm sure she's happy with the decisions she made and more power to her for that.

I love Phyllis because she's extremely talented and not acknowledged and appreciated enough when it comes to her acting skills. I've always loved her beautiful dark chocolate skin tone and her intellect....the industry needs more women like her, because she's selling herself as an actress, not her body. Many others need to be a pupil and take notes as to how she has handled her business with class, integrity and smarts....you can tell that you cannot just run all over her because she definitely know her craft and the business itself.

While we are aware that "sleep-arounds" are common in Hollywood, she presented the "punani" argument like like it was an assumption as to why she didn't get to play Pookie. She never explicitly said that someone forced a move on her, in exchange for the role.

I'm sure that conversation didn't go like who am I... if you was supposed to be pooky... you knew who you audition for or talk to production about.
They just didn't call you back after Chris Rock audition... the right person got that part.

This isn’t the full story….Martin was the win who actually won this role. Robin Harris passing, impacted him so much that they called Chris in since he did it second best. Chris was better than his own reading for the part, there goes history.
