Love that video, beautiful work. It's same as Parelli but at the end it's all natural horsemanship and it respects and considers the horse and it works to get better understanding and relationship between human and horse.
I agree with ayedeas, I don't believe in hitting horses for no reason, but at the same time horses need to learn respect. Like my horse had a biting habit and the only way I got her to stop was to whack her as soon as she bit me, it only took her getting whacked twice and she never did it again. Horses do worse to each other than we could ever do to them, so a simple whack isn't going to harm a horse in anyway shape or form, but it will tea ch them to respect your space
Whacking the horse was good. There are two things that are outside the bounds I have with my horses. One: You will not put your teeth on me. And two: you will not kick me for any reason. But once they understand the limits, I encourage the close contact. A lot of great experiences come from those close contacts.This of course assumes that the horse views the person as the leader and that horse and person are dialed in and have a strong mutual respect.
In response to Daphne (since TH-cam's system is rubbish) if you hit a horse just because you feel like it needed it (without the horse actually having done something to deserve a correction) You're right; the horse won't trust you. HOWEVER, if the horse did something (in this case, invading personal space) you do what any horse in the herd would - You get them away. Horses will bite or kick. We're simply thwacking them to send the same message. "I'm boss, you get out of my space."
It’s all about “focus” Sam. It’s alright for a horse to miss his buddies & you won’t change that. But this video shows how to get the horses attention so it learns not to run over the top of you. Then once you’ve established respect & personal space, everything else that a horse may focus on will be secondary to the focus on you.
What if the horse rears and kicks out? Mines answer to trying to get back to his friends is to go up and kick out to the point he catches me and I let go shouting and pulling doesn’t help makes it worse. I want to be able to bring him in on his own away from his friends, eat his feed, brush him then turn him back out. My horse was never heard bound until moving to this new yard we are on so it’s super strange. Moving him seems to have brought out this anxious behaviour that leaving his friends could be permanent . He’s EXTREMELY sharp. I saw a part in this video where the horse came in towards you VERY quickly and you corrected it however my horse retaliates by going up and kicking out. Is he ‘unfixable’? Otherwise if he won’t come in and have feed he will have to be PTS as he won’t eat . He looks ok now but last summer I could count every rib and his backbone like a case of neglect but when I tried to bring him in to feed once he lost his sight of his friends he just reared and reared and screamed until I let go. Feeding in fields is not an option as the horses fight. 😳 at a loss now
You can do all of those groundwork techniques also in liberty. Means, your horse is without a rope and in the roundpen with you in the middle, so that you have a bit more distance to each other. I have a similar situation with my young mare and I will do all those techniques with her herd in sight, so that she is relaxed enough to be focused on me. If your horse is panicked, it won't learn anything. So try to find a place - maybe directly on the field, but away from the other horses? - where he is able to be focused on you, but isn't panicked.
The horse that I have been riding is much different when I take him out he is fine until I ride him about 15 feet away the he starts to turn in circles wich I have dealt with before but not as bad he will also toss his haed and walk sideways yesterday he almost hit the barbed wire fence and when I try to get him to stop he tries to take off I did not want to but I had to emergency dismount and hand lead him home for fear he or me would get hurt.
Personal space? ...................are you kidding me..........Once you are dialed in with the horse and have strong mutual respect, the close interactions are some of the finest experiences with a horse.
Yes, but not when you don't know the horse and when they are half-distracted because of the herd. I don't want a horse to jump on me because he is frightened. I close the space, the more I know the horse
