It had also gotton too much "run away from monster"-ry- already. But Soma was a pure disappointment for me in terms of Gameplay. While the story and the intial sequences where incredibly well done, the game takes defenselessness to an absurd level where I no longer can like the game. Penumbra 1+2 felt more to me like adventures. Like exploring the world was actually really enjoyable. I deeply love and live horror games, but I hope that devs will get creative again and make them gamey again, instead of relying entirely on "run away and hide in the closet" mechanics. It offers nothing for me personally in the long run. I am not against exploration games or "walking simulators" (this term is bs) as well. I really loved Dear Esther. I enjoyed exploring the world and learn about the deep story, while no monster catches me to be instant game over or unable to move after I was hit once, which is exactly what happened to me in Soma. The Gameplay part got annyoing to a point where I just skipped on the rest of the game, no matter how ingenious the story might be. I find it insulting. I wanted to like the game, really. But it was impossible for me. To get back to your question: Yes, I think Soma lives entirely by the hype and the fame of the previous titles of the creators, luckily so, because I always loved Frictional Games. It's nice for them, but I am not on board with this kind of games anymore. I nevertheless still respect them for getting philosophical topics into their games. This is somehting they deserve kudos for and is still unique and great, something original, clever and outside of the main stream. So I am glad that this game got the recognition it got. Still, from the standpoint of it being a game and it's game design, it's highly overrated imo.

I don't give anything about scores like 8/10 personally or popular oppinions. Many players like what the media tells them is good, that jus how it works. and they will reach out and defend games because of their average score. What the "best horror games out there" are is an entirely subjective matter. And if you let media scores and reviewers dictate that to you, you are losing your healthy scepticism and individual judgement. So yea, I, me, personally, I think the game is overrated. I'm not the only one by the way.

It definitely has that vibe. If you're into older British detective shows, have you ever heard of A Touch of Frost? It's pretty gritty and has its intense moments.
I do joke but the OST is pretty good. One take on it gives you the staggering feeling of hope escaping your very grasp as dread surrounds you. As a musical peace it is pretty solid.
