That's an interesting point. Actually, some of the East Asian film awards, such as Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards and Hong Kong Film Awards, do set the category for "Best Action Choreography".
When I was a kid, the Hollywood fighting scenes could never satisfy me, compared with the fancy fights in HK movies, until The Matrix finally hired a legendary HK martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping. Nowadays, there have been more and more impressive performances in Hollywood as well, like the John Wick series or the Bourne Identity series, whose fight scenes were even choreographed by western experts.
It might be a tradition that the eastern filmmakers value fights and stunts more than their western counterparts. However, it seems to me that the audience around the world is beguiled by the gorgeous moves. I hope the Academy will award the professionals in the future just as for the Costume Design or Visual Effects.

"Did not know that Donnie Yen did BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu)." Well, he has done a LOT more than that, plus he has a purple belt in it. He's well versed in multiple styles of martial arts. Aside from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he is a multiple-time world
champion in Wushu, a Judo black belt, a 6th Dan in Taekwondo, along with mastery of Muay Thai, MMA, Wing Chun, Karate, Sanda, Hung Ga, Wrestling, Tai Chi, Boxing, Parkour, Kickboxing, Hapkido, and Jeet Kune Do. He's a DYNAMO of martial arts.

What a lot of people in the west don't know is that most HK actors grew up training martial arts. After they did the choreography and when the camera rolls, they fight for real. So it's the norm for them to get injured during filming, though not as much and hardcore as Jackie Chan. And that's how they make the fight scenes look realistic and intense. It's an unmatched standard.

    • @billywashere6965

BINGO. That's literally what Donnie Yen said about this scene with Collin Chow. He said that he outlined the basics but that they were "actually fighting" using the techniques they learned, so it wasn't one of those things where it was an actor learning how to do choreography, it was two accomplished martial artists telling a story. That's why most Chinese, Japanese, and South Korean films have such awesome fight scenes and most Hollywood junk is junk.

When I broke down this fight for myself, I saw a VERY interesting combination of grappling techniques from at least 4 different traditional martial arts. (I've always been more of a grappler than a striker.....) The very beginning (besides traditional Kung Fu, Western boxing and kickboxing) was a lot of traditional Judo. Hip and shoulder torquing movements (turning throws using body movement and the opponent's momentum and weight against them) from a standing or kneeling position. After the initial sequence, I saw a wide variety of techniques from BJJ (close grappling and transitions from various guard positions), classic grappling positions from Japanese Jiu-Jitsu (the classic triangle, for instance, more movements typically used in space), and Hapkido (grapples using various improvised tools such as jackets or improvised hybrid positions).Honestly, one of my favorite fight sequences ever committed to film.

The father of the main character Huo Yuan Jia in the film, Endi was also a martial arts master and raised Yuan Jia who became one of the greatest martial artists in history and a living legend in China. Also Huo Yuan Jia became a teacher during his life and one of his students is was Chen Zhen. Jet Li played Yuan Jia in Fearless and Chen Zhen in Fist of Legend. In Fearless Yuan Jia is poisoned and when you watch Fist of Legend Jet Lis Chen Zhen is looking for the killer of his teacher so those two films are kinda connected. Anyway Colin Chou is Endi in Fearless, Yuan Jias father and he's a badass in Fearless.

Yuen Wo Ping is a oftentimes collaborator with Jet Li and he directed all the fight choreography in the two films I mentioned for Jet Li, Fearless & Fist of Legend becoming another connection between Colin Chous En Di, Jets Yuan Jia and Jets Chen Zhen in Fist of Legend. My point could not be made if I included any of the information you added. I was making the connection between Endi, Yuan Jia and Zhen and now I've added Wo Ping as more connective tissue

The little arm spin Donnie does is not necessary a fake. In traditional Kung fu theory the spinning of the arm collets the blood at the fist and allows you to punch quite a bit harder and feel less pain. Speed x mass = velocity. Velocity x precision = +😭. When mass is your fist even a few grams makes a world of difference.

Are you sure you've seen part 1?
I'm asking because what you're saying reflects my feelings for the second part. The fights were well performed, but had absolutely no tension. I was bored the entire time.
In the first movie, the action was perfect, though. There was a build-up to every fight and it never seemed like there was a protagonist who couldn't die or get seriously harmed.

    • @UGOkilleth
      @UGOkilleth 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Kijinn I've seen part 1 and yes it is the better one of the two. Part 1 was much more intense, especially during the 2 v 1 fight. I just don't like how choreographed everything looked. It basically looked more like a dance rather than a fight, similar to the 70s kungfu movies but much faster. But maybe that's just me coming from Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, and korean choreography style.

I see. My favorite fight in The Raid was the one between Yayan Ruhian (the antagonist in the 2 vs 1 fight) and Joe Taslim (the Special Forces leader). It seemed less obviously choreographed to me.
Could you spare the time to recommend a Korean movie with especially good martial arts?
Love Korean film making (they release better stuff than Hollywood), but haven't seen many martial arts centered movies yet.

    • @UGOkilleth

@@Kijinn For korean, their choreography aren't spectacular but I appreciate the realism behind it. These movies aren't fight oriented but they had pretty good realistic fight scenes. Little fun fact. When Donnie Yen was winding up his arm as if to punch, that's called a bolo punch. Originates from Filipono martial arts and made it's way into boxing.
