I clicked instantly when I saw this on my recommended. Family is something not many people talk about because you’re just supposed to put up with their behaviour without being given the tools to deal with it efficiently because they’re ‘family’. But additionally I think family members forget that we are all individuals and should be treated as such

I think that's what its about isn't it, sharing what has helped us with others who want to listen. I was trying to explain to someone this week that in my job i meet 3 kinds of people, 1 those who don't have a victim mentality and accept they themselves have made some mistakes, 2 those who do have a victim mentality but are willing to let go of it make a hugely positive changes to the outcomes and happiness in their lives and 3 those who have a victim mentality but refuse to let go ot it. Working with the people in groups 1 and 2 is fantastic as together we achieve some wonderful things that can give them a wonderful fresh start in life, while for those in group 3 all you can ever do is make a very small temporary change in their life's that might if your really lucky make them happy for an hour before they find another reason to support their right to consider themselves a victim. If people want to change then its wonderful to help them achieve that change but if people are determined to be victims who are we to say they cannot do so, no matter how much we see that its spooling their lives. 🙏🙏🙏

I know where she is coming from, especially when you are trying to run defense for a child with another adult/parent. It can feel overwhelming dealing with all those personalities and being protective of a child and overwhelmed by the forcefulness of another adult. I understand what Eckhart is saying but it isn't easy in practice. This is one of the harder situations to stay present in. Bless this Mom.

I am also facing this challenge daily, what i've learnt is don't expect too much, change takes time, lifetime habits are ingrained...Each time you practice presence you may last 10 seconds, 20 seconds without getting involved, forgive yourself for if you do and create a new intention to stay present gor as long as you can...Over time like Eckhart says you find you remain calmer for longer and longer time without having to defend anyone as they play out their scenarios to a mutual conclusion...This is exactley what i've been working on this week...Thank you Eckhart for the confirmation that i'm on the right track...As long as no ones killing eachother everythings solvable...💖

I remember a dinner that I attended many years ago, in which there was a loud and aggressive atmosphere among the other guests. Drama all over the place. I was quiet, and I felt quiet, until I suddenly surprised myself by shouting: "SHUT UP!", and then continued eating my dinner. The others were so stunned, that they forgot their drama, and proceeded to eat their dinner as well. I had no particular emotion other than: "mmm, this food tastes good".

To deal with the difficulty family members, is to allow their "limitations" to unfold in the present moment,it's part of this present moment, it's not good or bad ,just is the burden is not created by this people, the burden is created by your mind, by believing in the story in your head. I'm a phd student in chemistry with my advisor, whose ego is huge though he is more than 60yrs old. When it turns to the point that I need to defense and graduate(very enough publications), he refused again and again even threaten me by words that I'll be kicked out from the lab. He behaves like an infant that is constantly needy and grab, grab and grab, take, take, no satisfaction. And I was unconsciously taking his responsibility throughout years. I feel completely drained with him and at the point when I need to write my thesis, I was not given any time if he came to me, as what has been throughout years, as long as it's not he wants, he doesn't care. I learnt so much during my graduate study not only my major and degree, but also human nature. Some are deeply dark and some are bright. Though hard, I'll still get through this process and I wish and I hope all good luck with people in this world. Our life is so previous and all hardships can turn into essence joy. Bless~

When I matured and started to ground deeper into the Present Moment, I realized that actually it was ME that in was in ego, and I was BLAMING and JUDGING, and FEEDING into the energy I didn't want. I remind her that only she is in charge or her happiness, not me and not others. In the last couple of months things have gotten much better. Sometimes we can have seemingly limitless patience with others and at other times absolutely none at all, we can't give what we don't have to give at that moment in time but what we can do is know ourselves and accept we are not at our best and do as little as possible to cause unhappiness for others at that moment and of course regret ajd remorse for ourselves later 🙏🙏🙏🙏

The other side of the coin of course is being in the presence of people who are relentlessly positive! No negativity allowed! The energy required to push away any so-called perceived pain or negativity if that's what you want to call it is wasted. It seems it only serves to reinforce rather than dissolve. Like seeing someone who professes to be happy happy happy and realizing that what they are experiencing is the opposite and they simply will not acknowledge it.

It can be very challenging not to be drawn in to fights, us vs them, drama etc. - especially with family dynamics that play out a certain script each and every time. What helps is refusing to take sides, watching without interfering and only interfering by rerouting towards the present. So e.g. when someone is complaining heavily and dragging everybody down they usually refer to the past or an imagines future. A question like "how about now, do you feel the pain now?" sometimes helps.

I wish it was that simple. My dad has a heavy pain body. While he is still able to display some acts of kindness, he's also a bona fide chauvinist who verbally abuses my mother, and often makes racist and homophobic comments. When I am in a deep state of presence, I can overlook all his defects and be empathetic towards him. But I also realized that my state of presence doesn't nullifies all the wrong things that he says and does. He feels entitled to act like that with his wife and sons, so, even though being in a state of presence is very beneficial to myself, it is not enough to stop his terrible behaviors. Some people are just very deep in that rabbit hole, and they will drag others to their level of unawareness. How do you reconcile all of that on a day-to-day basis? How can you always be present and empathetic towards someone that is constantly causing harm to you and others? Because if you don’t confront them at some point, they will continue to believe that their behavior is justified, and they will never be able to transcend this state of unawareness. And how do you confront someone so close to you without losing your own awareness?

Sounds a lot like my dad , I had to separate from my dad as his behaviour toward me was so bad that no matter how present I am , I still refuse to be around that type of energy without it making me unwell ,so I put it to him for the first time in my life to that his behaviour hurt my feelings , and told him I love him so much but at this moment I cannot be around him , and maybe someday when I am a little stronger we can re connect . I believe it awakened him a little hearing this as for the first time he didn't not answer with violence or anger and was just very quiet , we didn't speak for almost 2 years and my dad died suddenly in March this year before we could speak again or make a mends ,which made me very sad ,as I love my dad so much , but I don't regret my decision as I think it's important to let people know that their behaviour is not acceptable to you , without of course you acting emotionally to it , and I believe this can help the other person immensely if you just point out calmly why their behaviour feels damaging to you ,no matter how present you are you are still entitled to say how you feel , Hope this helps 🙏🙏🙏good luck

@@jodie4183 I am deeply sorry to know that you couldn’t make amends with your father. I fear that if I just cut bonds with my dad, the same thing might happen to us. Relationships with close relatives usually are the toughest ones that we must deal with it. They push us to our limits, but they also teach us more than any other thing on this life. Thank you for your kind words, I’ll keep trying to do my best to stay present around his pain body. And I hope you can find peace and closure after such a sad loss. I wish you the best.

Number 1 you cannot change others..not even a Buddha could..all we can do is change our own reactions and of course with such a difficult person it is very hard and why the Buddha said that for growth the company of the wise is so beneficial. I also currently live with 2 unconscious family members and when I get away to stay at a Buddhist monastery, I see a massive difference and it helps so much. As such I endeavour to be in a wholesome environment as much as possible…when it isn’t, space, meditation and Byron Katie worksheets do help and it does take a lot of effort ….also forgiving is helpful..forgiving them and ourselves. I had the good fortune to hear a wonderful 82 Cambodian nun speak..her husband was killed by the Khmer Rouge and she asked them for forgiveness for the hate and desire for revenge that she had. This gave her the peace of mind she was seeking. Very best of luck …

@@theinngu5560 Thank you for your words. I do not live with my parents anymore, but I know what's going on over there, and that makes me sad... I agree with you, we can only change ourselves, and that itself is already a wild journey. I guess that some of my sadness has to do with the fact that I'm far away from them and I can't help them as much as they need it. It's a tough pill to swallow, to know that your loved ones will go through so much pain and confusion at the end of their lives. I wish you the best of luck with your family as well.

My son is toxic and he lives with me and hes now 31 and im 57. He rants about others all day long and its so hard not to get triggered because after a few hours its so draining. Hes autistic and also has some other mental health issues that are undiagnosed. I know if he lived on his own, he would be so isolated but i just dont know how to deal with his toxicity after a length of time. Its really hard to stay present as i am his venting point otherwise he wouldn't talk to anyone. I leave the room when it gets too much

I understand and myself can get caught up in the drama. Sometimes while I am present and being yelled at or what not . I feel as though I'm a door mate. Then other times when I stand up for myself I feel like I'm a ego and losing consciousness. I go back and forth between the 2. However there are moments when I am paying attention to the drama and in that moment I wake up and remember wow I was doing this year's ago to them and now they are to me. And it's the exact same thing but we switched places. It's very eye opening when that happens and freaky.

Simple remark, wasn't the family the place where you were supposed to be relaxed and at ease, to recharge your batteries, without all this alertness and intense vigilance...? If this isn't possible in one's family i suppose that environment is marred by some deeper problems, wouldn't it be better to work on the root cause and address those first? Otherwise all that vigilance and intense attention at home will eventually strain & drain you, most likely

Im still looking for answers regarding motherhood.
When I just became a mother unexpectedly with a traumatic birth and then after that no help , the next years no help and being very sick . Also a post partum and no help. Sitting with my baby with so much pain in my body and feeling exhausted and completely out of balance with hormones. My son also had no rest and as a baby almost didnt sleep , so every hour he slept I fell imeediatly asleep. It was absolutely horrible. How do you cope with that? I really wonder what the answer to that is?

As a lifelong Zen practitioner, I object to Mr. Tolle. He speaks of what amounts to SATORI; awakening, and thus breaks important rules of Zen. "He who speaks does not know, he who knows does not speak". He could lead one to false Satori. In the parlance of Zen, "He stinks of Zen."

His teaching is exactly like ancient zen master in China except he talks a lot more. That Zen master who always raised one finger and spoke nothing when people sought lesson from him was from ancient china according to what I read. Interesting backstory... His student repeated that to stranger seeking lesson (out of ego) when master was away got his raised finger cut off according to history... 😱
Why? 2 versions of stories. 1. stranger felt insulted & got angry with this phoney (might be a good swordsman). 2. master got back, told what happened, asked student to repeat what he did, when student raised finger he quickly cut it off with scissor to shock the student into awakening (Don't do this unless u are 2000% sure it will work)
