Ground is also super effective against Poison. Forgive my blunder.
On top of this, Ground is super effective against the Pokemon Iron Mugulis. You can find out for yourself via jimothycool.com

Yeah. From Gens 1-5, Poison is such a bad type that being super effective against it isn't a big deal, but with the addition of the Fairy typing, poison has a lot more value, and being strong against both Steel and Poison makes Ground a fairy's best friend.

Also "earthquake is a very solid attack" is a bit of an understatement. It's the most consistent attack in all of competitive Pokemon. 100 power, 100 accuracy, 16PP - no other type has standard STAB this good and reliable. Almost every physical attacker who can use it at least considers using it.

Hello, sir Jimothy Cool. I am a long-time watcher, but this is my first time commenting. I don't engage with the TH-cam comment section very often, if at all, but I felt like making a statement. I earnestly appreciate your content. Pokémon is a franchise that I enjoy a lot, and I enjoy watching content related to it. However, I am mostly unable to interact with the majority of Poké-Tubers- I suffer from chronic migraines, and the majority of Pokémon content creators tend to have louder, more bombastic personalities and editing styles which more often than not cause me physical pain. After a hard day's wor, it's nice to be able to engage with a series I enjoy without my illness getting in the way. I am grateful for the manner in which you present the information on your channel, and the insights into various, older metagames are very interesting. Thank you, and I hope you'll continue to create videos in the foreseeable future.

People talk about how Dark and Fairy were created in part to nerf Psychic and Dragon respectively, but I don’t see anyone talk about how Ground is the only other type to both be immune to and super effective against another type. Looking deeper into things, this checks out- it seems like Electric might have been even stronger at one point before Gen 1’s release, prompting late rebalancing of the type chart to both add Ground and further incentivize the use of Grass and Dragon, as well as indirectly buff Flying.
Notice something about that list? All four of those are weak to Ice, meaning that BoltBeam coverage wouldn’t be nearly as strong if Ground-Types didn’t give Electric-Types something to be scared of.

Despite Ground being one of the original 15 types, it’s pretty underrepresented among legendary Pokemon or Pokemon who have high base stats. Groudon is an Uber with a capital u, and Garchomp and Landorus were the two new additions before another drought of additions, which does a better job of explaining why they’ve been such defining Ground-types throughout the gen 5-8 stretch. Great Tusk and Iron Treads being released broke the streak of few legendary Groujd types, and they have coveted access to hazard removal while Landorus-T and Gliscor lost Defog.

I know Jim has a knowledge gap for gen 8, so I will elaborate a bit on Landorus. Lando is once again the #1 Pokémon in the meta game, and dominated the usage rates. However, its popular offensive and choice scarf movesets were vastly phased out in favor of a full-on specially defensive EV spread that ran leftovers with u-turn, SR, toxic, and EQ. This was the single most splashable set in the meta and could essentially be slapped onto any team with success. I think this is important to note because it shows just how versatile Landorus is, adapting its sets and tools to fit both faster and more balanced meta games.
Also, it should be known that Excadrill had the requisite usage rates to move up to OU at the end of gen 8 but could not due to the tiers being frozen (other Pokémon with this status include gastrodon, blaziken, and rotom-wash).

Do you mean as a pure special attacker, or with its normal spiking role? With spikes it has to invest defensively, and as an offensive threat I don't think it does anything better than starmie or suicune except boom, which is a weaker one anyways

I don't believe in playing long term spikes mind games, so one layer and some crucial chip damage is more than enough, especially when it can bait rapid spins. Also if you go spike for spike with the opponent they almost ALWAYS switch in a Gengar.

i'm surprised sheer force nidoking didn't get any respect here, it's never been ou ranked or mainstream but in gen 5 it's a ridiculously strong wallbreaker if you can make it work, particularly on rain (i like a set with earth power, thunder, ice beam, focus punch). and i remember it being decently common in gen 8 since in the slower metagame it was a really nice stallbreaker with earth power, ice beam, flamethrower, superpower to just delete everything

Lando-Ts reputation mainly comes from the fact that it was #1 in usage for several generations while these generations were active. Now that they’re over, the metas of these past generations have evolved, but Landorus-T had an overwhelming presence in basically the entire 3ds era. It’s been OU in every generation it’s been in. It was #1 in usage during ORAS and Sun and Moon. Now it’s back and among all the power creep it’s still a top 10 pokemon (even being #4 most used a couple months ago). It absolutely is the goat, but when playing these past metas retrospectively you get a warped view of what they were like since they have evolved so much.

Iron Treads did drop to UU and settled in as the Great Tusk of Gen 9 UU.
That is until Archaludon dropped in and made Rain strong in OU. Iron Treads rose up to OU as a staple in those teams and as a bit of a counter to the Bridge. It has since stayed there even after the Bridge got banned.

I would like to comment that Excadrill being in UU in Gen 8 is really funny cuz it's a very good pokemon in Gen 8 OU. Another situation of a pokemon being undervalued during the current generation. In fact, it would've risen back to OU had the tiering freeze not been implemented since it had OU level usage in the last 6 months of the gen. Truly one of the sad moments of all time (just kidding, it just makes it so drill can be top tier in 2 tiers).
The other note I'd like to add is that Nidoking has been a solid niche threat in OU in gens 6-8. Poison and ground STAB is an insanely good attacking combo after the addition of fairy and it has all of the special coverage it needs to cover the gaps, with dual STAB + ice beam and your pick between flamethrower and t-bolt for last which can be a little annoying, tho flamethrower is usually better just to avoid giving faster grounds like Drill and Lando free entry. It is a tad inconsistent since it's pretty prediction reliant and it's lackluster speed makes gives it some problems, especially against faster offensive teams, but nothing feels better than catching Clef on the switch and just instantly OHKOing it (assuming it's not spdef Clef which still takes 85% min on max hp max spdef and still gets OHKO'd on max roll). I also remember seeing scarf sets during Gen 8 tho I personally don't like sacrificing the damage output and ability to switch moves.

Ground is probably the best offensive type in the game. It hits 5 types super effectively, which makes them tied with fighting for hitting the most types super effectively in the game. However, unlike fighting, there are far fewer types that resist ground.

    Incoming insane rant ⚠️
I think ground demonstrates an issue with pokemon types. It frustrates me to an unending degree how favored some types are, the type chart is pretty balanced even if unfortunate for bug and ice but the difference in typings besides the chart is crazy. For the longest time Ice had the near useless hail, meanwhile sand has had a presence since its integration. Don’t even get me started on moves, the number of good physical rock moves vs physical ground moves is pretty ridiculous. Earthquake is the most broken and highly universal stab move ever, and rock having the quirky inaccurate moves is just stupid. Ground, steel, water and fairy must be favorites at the pokemon company.
