I don't get why you don't post more. Your videos are articulate, thorough and very enjoyable! Then again, I am not a TH-cam content creator so it's easy for me to say this. Either way, I give it a 👍. Look forward to the next one!
Thanks so much for the encouragement! I intend to post more frequently this year. I’m currently editing a video of a trip to Grayson Highlands, VA and I’ve started work on a video about coffee brewing methods for the trail. Hope to post these soon. Thanks for subscribing 😄👍
Thanks, great tip! That makes a big difference, especially when you realize you need something from the canister after stashing it for the night and it’s totally dark 😖
I have that crazy reflective tape spelling out hey bear on the lid along with a pic of Walter White...who's gonna mess with that can. But I can put it 100 yes away. Always semi in the open. I can see it with my tiny headlamp reflected like somebody put a spotlight on my. I check it once or twice but bears make a lot of noise. They'll wake me up. Knock wood never had a problem.
Alaskan, here! As somebody who lives/hikes in grizzly country, (in re odor control), it’s important to mention they can smell up to 20 miles away. Their sense of smell is insane. So even with Bearikades, Bear Vaults & Smelly Proof bags inside of one, a bear can smell it. A canister is meant to keep them from getting to your food, not you, which is why placement is crucial.
Sound advice! I’ve read other comments about tests done on Smelly-Proof bags that showed that they were ineffective against detection by dogs. Bears have a sense of smell far more sensitive than even a blood hound.
Exactly! And it’s especially dangerous when people believe these canisters/bags, will keep a bear from smelling their food, so they aren’t as vigilant about wind direction/placement. Be safe out there!
One thing about repackaging freeze-dried meals: If you repackage them in FREEZER Zip Lock bags, you don't need to save the original bag. I recommend writing the name of the meal and the cooking instructions on the Zip Lock bag with a Sharpie. Boil your water and pour it into the ziplock bag and follow the instructions.
Thanks so much for the tip! I’ve read about that method. Personally, I would opt for rehydrating a repackaged freeze-dried meal in my cook-pot. Freezer bags get really soft at boiling temperatures and should be supported by a cozy or something similar when filled with boiling water. One advantage to cook-pot rehydration is that heat can be applied during rehydration. This can be especially helpful when ambient temperatures are low and elevation is high. For example, the boiling point at 10,000 ft is 193°F. It can take considerably longer for a meal to rehydrate at that temperature when cooking on a cold day. And who likes crunchy rice? 😂
Good Morning ! You are correct about freezer bags needing support while the meal rehydrate. What I do is pour the water into the bag, seal the bag and put it inside the stove ( after I have turned the stove off ).
You’re probably right. No doubt those could make them curious. I would hope that some of the other “human” smells would serve as a deterrent. Always good to be careful with any scented products, though.
Man I'm a bear can master. I'm so used to it I don't find it inconvenient in the least. I disagree about the sent proof part. If there's a bear I want it to be crystal clear to the bear where what they want is. Letem have it. Chase that B like your gonna eat it. It'll run. I like the air tag idea...except it's so heavy. I'm goin to the mountains next week. Straight off the couch as usual. Not a great plan at 61 but I've waisted most of the season.
Yeah, I agree. I think you get used to packing and carrying a canister. They are convenient for sure. I’ve only had a problem when trying to pack my larger canister in my ULA Circuit pack. Inside it pressed against my back and strapped to the top it was unstable and even fell off. Other than that, though, I always have a canister.
@@jfowler that's why I've gone to gossamer gear for my last two packs. They have the very comfortable removable sit pad that I value highly for just that reason. I'm using their G4-20. A 42 liter frameless. Works great for me with a BV 450 or 500. I'm so tempted to get that new little one.
This whole protects your food from bears strategy needs a rethink since I watched videos about at least 4 people being killed by bears; but hey, the food was fine? Those 2 campers in Canada had bear spray, no weapons in parks allowed, maybe if their food was out, they might have had time to escape, just throwing ideas out here, I know it won't be popular.

I liked the tip about lashing a washer to the outside of the pack.
I’m so glad you found that useful! I keep one of those lashed to both of my packs 😎

I would share with my hiking buddy, but you’re my hiking buddy 😅😂. Great video! Beards looking good bro!
Thanks, bro! 😂 Looking forward to our next trip! 😎🎒🐻😲
Another tip: Put some reflective stickers/tape on your canister in case you need to find your canister in the dark.

The flat washer is a good trick
Thanks! I’m so glad you found it useful 😄
Love the Airtag idea, didn't think of that one.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! 😄
Helpful tips - especially the inverted canister and washer hacks which I’ll try next time. Thank you!
Thanks! I’m so glad they were useful ☺️
Great tips! Air tag…genius idea!
Glad it was helpful! I can’t take credit for that one. A few viewers shared that tip in their comments on my first bear canister video 😎
Superb information and delivery!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it 😄
Not to sound thirsty but you’re very handsome. And as a new backpacker, I enjoy your informative videos. Thank you for sharing
Very kind. I’m so glad that you enjoy the videos! 😄
Awesome tip on the Tile products. I have 2 of them. Never thought of putting it in the canister.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful. I can’t take credit for that one, though. A few commenters on the previous bear canister video shared that clever tip 😎

awesome tips man!

Some of the smellies such as sun screen, soap and lip balm that I have been using on my body, how does that not attract bears at night?

you lost me at the ember sticker :D
I have to confess. My preference is React 😆

Thanks for sharing your comments! That’s tragic! There is no doubt that understanding bears and their behavior is key.
