nope you looking at it wrong. we've been spoilt by streaming and the short releases, but I see this as the Harry Potter movies, the years of build up was half the fun... because without that rush and sense of longing it wouldn't have been as much as a hit (books helped too though)

The reason enforcers wear masks when they go to the undercity isn't because of societal hierarchies and perceived notions of "pure" and "impure". It's because the undercity is where the mines are and the mines produce smoke. Those of the undercity are used to it because they're born there, so they don't need masks. But the topsiders are used to fresh, clean air, so enforcers wear masks to breathe properly. Buildings are ventilated, so they don't need them when they're inside. It's not so bad that it's a 100% necessity for topsiders to wear masks in the undercity. But if there's a foot chase that they get involved in while in the undercity, they're gonna want those masks because they aren't used to the dense, foggy air.
Quick clarification that I think is okay to make since you were so close - the enforcers aren't wearing the masks because they're "uppity" or haughty or whatever, they're wearing the masks because the air quality down there is just that bad. It isn't just a stylistic choice that the visual clarity is so much better in the topside scene at the start of the episode; you can literally see the pollution radiating from the "slums" where Vi and the gang live. Can't wait for the rest of the series, loved how engaged you were with the first episode!
