with these up to date mods it makes it easy.. I'm still working on 1.7.10.. because Ive been working on one map for 12 years. It's really big and have 3 large main towns. plus a very large railroad. h8 to just leave it for an updated minecraft. someday though. these new mods are pretty cool.

You should make a copy and see what happens when you update it! Ive heard the newer versions treat world generation a litle nicer these days and that way you can go back if its cooked

For better performance you can always chenge some settings like chunk rendering distance or just turning off shaders
