Queen Isolation Cage Follow-Up, did it work to keep a swarm from absconding? Queen Cage that works.

  • This is a follow up video to demonstrate how a Queen Isolation Cage may be used to keep a queen on a frame of drawn comb so a freshly hived swarm will remain in the hive you install them in.
    If you want to see the first video that demonstrates what the issue was, please click on this link: • How Not to Lose your H...
    I am also testing out a Queen Introduction Cage that is made by the same company, but is not available in the United States "yet". That system provides protection for a newly introduced queen while the resident bees become acclimated to her cent which will vastly improve acceptance. You will also be able to verify if there is another queen present, or laying workers.
    This Queen Isolation Cage is available through BetterBee, I am not compensated for providing this referral: www.betterbee....
    How many times have you hived a swarm, just to come back the next day and find an empty hive? This solves that problem.
    I use Queen Isolation Cages to produce a brood break for colonies that demonstrate high mite loads, if you'd like to know more about how I accomplish that, please follow this link:

    I also invite you to subscribe to my channel if you aren't already a subscriber. It's a great way to show your support :) Thank you.

    Gonna be using this for the first time to isolate a queen for grafting purposes in a couple of days!

    Great news, thanks for the follow up! I was worried about her being able to get out due to her small size as I remember. Also, thanks for the hands-on video, I think these are more appealing to a larger audience of people. Even though your Q&A's are solid gold, please don't stop those. You are a teacher to many, and that's a good thing. Great video, thanks for sharing!

    Nice idea, Frederick.
    My name is Ivan and I living in WA last 25 years. I moved from Ukraine and now I am a little for 70. I like your s isolator and where did you buy it? A few years ago I did 3 isolators from plastic queen excluder made by dadant. Before it I made it from metal excluder, but queens were escaped. I took ideas because I seen isolators in Ukrainian bee shops more than 40 years ago. It were for one frame, 2 frames and even 3 frames, which was made on the factory. A few last years I was putting queen in one frame isolator before main honey flow( around 20 Jun) and was realized in the end of July. Brood in that frame was capped and full of varroa mites and I have to destroy that brood. After I took out honey from hive I giving them apiwar. Queen starting laying eggs from end of July to the end of August. Then I again trying to put queen to isolator but this one is deferant. It is wide less than half of inch (10ml.) This season I put them in isolators 23-26 August and I will realize them on February. By 20 September all brood will be gone and I could give them apigard.
    This season l was cutting off drone brood and didn't give them apivar just going to give them apigard in the end of September where no any brood. Then in the end of November I using oxalic acid solution according to instructions from Dadant, where I buying it. My bees are happy from this and queens are OK. My friends beekeepers don't use my ways. They have brood until the end of November or December. Bees eating a lot honey for making a brood, colonys are weak and needs to treat bees from varroa regularly. Bees also suffer from that treatments.
    Frederick, what are you thinking about this? Maybe I am wrong because my friends don't use my methods?

      There are nectar dearths in a lot of places this year, it will be interesting to learn the overall impact after the productive season is finished. Thanks for sharing, and for that nice compliment :)

    Thanks for follow up Frederick, we're glad it worked :-) And tahnk you for finding one more use for the cage :-) Regarding the lid for the cage: it is of course possible to make lids closed from all sides (like in introduction cage) but there is also a compromise: sometimes frames are not standard in leght, or the hive is not standard in size - and the lit would not fit inside. The U-shape lid seems to be most universal.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for that explanation about the lid. It's really not much of an issue at all.

    Hello Frederick , I have question not related to the video , If honey is heated past the figure of 104 f , let's say overheated does it change the colour of the honey at all ? Thank you for your time , Peter 🇦🇺

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Heating at that moderate temp wouldn't alter the honey color, higher temps above 110 have that potential. All honey will darken with age, but pasturized honey has a pretty consistent golden/amber color.

    I've caught 5 swarms now in the last 2 weeks. I've a question, in the case that I do not have a queen isolation cage could I in a pinch put the queen in a second story of a hive with a queen excluder to prevent her from leaving? I know its not ideal but in my case I caught a massive swarm, easily 30,000+ bees and would really prevent them from leaving.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can do that, but only reason I don't like that method is that you have to separate the hive bodies again to remove it, but it does the same thing.

    Hey Fred. Off topic I have a question. Do they sell something to add to pollen sub to kill SHB larva? Also, will OAV kill open brood? Grateful

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oav hasn't demonstrated a negative impact on open brood. I don't know of a pollen sub additive to act on small hive beetle larva that I would want in my bee feed. That's a delicate balance... nutrition with a larvicide in it?

    If you have a new queen that you have just brought to put in a queenless hive is there a chance she will just leave the hive before laying eggs?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are always variables, and they can reject her. BUT, once they begin to feed and groom her she should remain in the hive.

    Forgive my ignorance. What happens that makes them produce honey? 🧐🤔

    • @FrederickDunn

      A strong nectar flow from local forage and a large work force.
