I love how in the PS4 version, the fire/light thing on Malus's arm goes out as he dies, whereas in the PS3 version it stays lit! What a neat little detail!
It eventually goes out, we just don’t see it in the video
Also happens with the smaller crystal things on Hydrus’ side. When he sinks to the bottom they all slowly go out

I'm new to this game but it really surprised me
There is less detail in the darker climate. Has taken away a lot of the beauty in their armour. Unless they're in broad daylight the clarity is not exactly better than the original.

I love the colossus sounds more in the PS2 version. They sounded like real animals. In the PS4 version, they have this weird growl.
It's still an amazing remake.
When I heard Phaedra and Avion I realised they would all sound the same.. :( Phaedra's screams were so hurting in the original... I prefered the original version of "Sunlit Earth" too, where there was drums and a louder flute
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. It was almost like they all sounded the same tbh... The sound effects give them their originality. I can't complain though.. someone will fuck with something to make it lack the originality. Still an amazing job with this remake though!!
Phalanx (the 13th) vocal on the new version is the most noticeable change for me. The original is just heart-wrenching, made me think they changed it just to tone things down.

A lot of people saying they would prefer the original but in my opinion the original was EPIC, but by gawd this is what you call a remaster. It looks beautiful. Played all 3 versions love them all but definitely would take the remaster over the original any day of the week, twice on Sundays.

I like the PS3 colors and fog more than the easy to see PS4 version. In most cases PS3 wins for me.

always so interesting when seeing these comparisons because in my memory... it always looked as good as ps4... and then seeing the side by side I'm like "oh." Beauty of memory I suppose...
The game is very beautiful, even on the PS2. It's actually one of the greatest graphical achievements on the system (it has dynamic lighting for example, a very rare thing for a PS2 game, I recommend watching a Digital Foundry video for more information). It's all about the atmosphere and interesting style I guess.
Poco true. You don’t realize how far it’s come till you look at it side by side. Now looking back at it you wonder how the hell did the ps2 run sotc. Nonetheless a truly amazing game.

Ps2 feels like somewhere forgotten, lost and empty where the ps4 version feels wondrous, and like people should be there but aren't. Ps2 has mystery where ps4 has absence. Both great though, best remake of any game I've ever played so far, and it's all but perfect.
(Edit) getting really romantic with these metaphors but; ps2 is like a tree Falling in the forest and ps4 is like stumbling on ancient ruins.

I think the rocks overhaul in the PS4 version is more stunning than the actual remaster of the colossi themselves.

i agree, they took away alor of hair textures in some and the color palet is almost non existand in the remastered. they did really good on foiliage and architecture though

@@armorwolf7934 I think you more so like the lighting on the colossi, in the original game I think they made the lighting how it was only for the colossi to look more intimidating which made everything else look weird af, in the remastered they've improved the textures of the everything including the colossi and made the lighting more realistic
Ye, the landscape of remake is very detailed.
The neat detail they added with Malus' flames going out when he is defeated in the PS4 version makes it more saddening.
I gotta say that I loved how when Avion fell into the water in the original, it would make a HUMONGOUS splash but in the remake, the splash isn't really that big :(
he fell in almost a dive, so it makes sense why it would be way less water

The remake got the water physics down at least. When Avion was dive bombing you, you feel the splash and force behind the waves as it comes down before you jump on it.

The waves in the fights against Avion, Hydrus, and Pelagia are superb.

I just realised what I always liked about the old game over the remake, and it wasn't even anything fancy, but it was the awkward white outline of the Dormin tentacles! It is a random thing that I didn't realise I missed so much until rewatching them side by side

Yes, it's too quiet and most of the colossi sounds fucking lame. Pelagia in the intro sounds like a T-rex for some reason instead of that ambience it had in the original version (wtf).

Avion doest have that epic wind sound to him when he arrives. Instead they add a fucking dinosaur sound to him.

The remake is just different. Not worse. It had WAYYYYY more of an atmosphere, its just a different feeling atmosphere than before. It's a lot less melancholic and dark than the original, but it makes up for it with its lush, wonderous and huge tones.

Btw the ONLY colossus that i think sounded better in the remake version is Quadratus, both intro and death scene.

I love both versions. The remake looks amazing and it's nice how it slightly brightens up the world with the some what brighter colors. But the dark and dingy atmosphere in the original and the worse graphics I feel suited the game perfectly. I would honestly encourage anyone who hasn't to play both versions if they have the means.

It is incredible how the ps2 models are still good despite being over 10 years old. (I know it is the ps3 version but it is just higher resolution)
Weird, I wish I could "fuse" the two versions, some details of the PS4 Pro are really great, but they lack some of the PS3 details? Also the lighting of the PS3 work's better in with most monsters...? Idk, but they have 2 completely different visual styles, and both look great.
Am I the only one who prefers the new version?

Thank you! There's even filters if you want the original green/brown color palette and stuff, but damn, I took about 2GB of photos. I think the magic of SotC is the overall atmosphere, and the remake really stepped up.
I think the new one makes it feel larger, more organic. Then again I have no experience with the original. I think some people just feel nostalgic toward the original.

I really love the more detailed models and all, but the change in lighting really irks me. Like it's nice that I can see all the shiny details now but it is called SHADOW of the Colossus, guys. It looked way better when Phaedra loomed over me draped in menacing shadow than illuminated with perfectly bland, clear lighting. Hurts the atmosphere, yknow?

This is the first remaster where I couldn't decide which one edged the other out. The original has such a unique atmosphere that the remaster lacks a little, but makes up for in amazing environmental detail. They are both so amazing I can't choose
The ps4 is a remake that mimics the original, while the ps3 is a remaster of the original game from ps2.

I find the newer version to have better lighting, but the older one is more asthetically pleasing.
I agree i think the ps3 had better looking models and colors but the fur, wind, and water physics and shaders are better

The noises they make sound so much cooler in the original. They all sound like annoyed cows in the ps4 version, and all general sound effects just sound better in the first one. Also I liked how Wander didn't look like he was on crack in the original one lol.
Not only the noises. Music and sound are better in the original too. In the Valus cutscene for example. You hear the rattle of the rings on his feet. Absent in the ps4 version.

Not nostalgia for me! I'm happy the game is getting a new audience and there were definitely some much needed smoothing out of the controls but the graphical improvement was at the expense of making a really distinct change in art style that washes everything out the in some green hue. For those who love Ueda's games one of their greatest strengths is their very unique art design, particularly w/r/t/ lighting. The PS3 remaster maintained that but on the PS4 Bluepoint just made it look like a generic modern game *shrug*
At least it held onto the greatest part of Shadow of the Colossus: letting us watch as Wander gets thrown into the sunset while the death cinematic plays for each Colossus.
The original eyes looked regular but the remastered versions of a the eyes looks like little portals

Just played through it. Its not all green, not even remotely. Massive exaggeration. And iirc there are filter settings.
Just because something is new doesn't mean it's bad like where the hell people get this stereotype from. The old one was really foggy and had no texture, they fixed it in the new version
In the menu screen you can choose which style/color you want your experience to be. More like the original color palate, all black/white, sepia, blue undertones, pink, etc.
The PS3 Remaster was exceptional. I have played this on all three consoles and it shows what an amazing job they did as the PS3 version was jawdropping. Love this game, very difficult on PS2 with old style controls

Darren Niepold the sounds and music arr also better in the original. Gives more atmosphere to the game. Little details that are missing from the ps4. Music kicks in a little bit to late and is not as powerful than the original
PS2/3: Great atmophere that gives it deep, dark and peaceful.

True, but the 3 version is better since it doesn't have the major terrible frame drops due to how it much pushed the console to it's limits with the large enivornment and colossi

I like the back round on the PS4 but the artistic element in the ps3 really brought out the original one for me. Like the shading and the feeling that they really animated and worked for every strand of hair.
Artistically I prefer the original. The lack of detail give the game a more mysterious look.
I love how the remake gives you more depth of field unlike the original, especially air scene and water scenes.

The only thing I don’t like about the PS4 version was the removal of the colossi’s death sounds, specifically Phaedra’s. I also prefer the purple color scheme of the colossi in the older versions.
The Dirge cutscene really shows how much the game improved by the PS4...
As impressive as the remake is, the original/PS3 version will always be my go-to. Whole game looks like a gorgeous oil painting or something and just looks a lot more stylized that the remakes more realistic look.
Still can't believe it, they did the impossible, they took an already perfect game and somehow made it even better!
Ps4 looks graphically better but the ps2 looks cinematically more appealing.
People, stop judging the newer one, stop hating on its looks and sounds, they put a lot of effort into each version of the game. Just appreciate this game for what it is! I love all the versions!

I would like to say, in the original, Malus looks absolutely terrifying, because of the full and dark colours, it really pops out at you when you first enter his domain
Honestly, the original is better. It had much more of a sense of place. It was misty, overgrown, desolate, and actually felt like some forbidden land untouched by man. Don’t get me wrong, the remake looks great, but it’s much too vibrant and it ruins the overall vibe the original had. Also, why did they massively tone down the colossi black blood spray? That was one of the coolest parts of taking one down.

Looking at the original I see how some colossi actually had purple accents throughout their body. Wish that was carried over to the PS4 remaster.
I loooove the definition of the fur and stone-work in the remake. It makes the colossi look even more like fantastical beasts...and it makes it even sadder to kill them :(
its interesting that in some moments the older version is better, sometimes the textures are a bit more detailed or the timing of the eye glow and camera angles are different

i feel like the lighting in the original worked to make everything feel massive while the remake looks small and less aw inspiring than the original (still beautiful non the less)

honestly, i like the original more. the colossi felt more mysterious and godlike when you couldn't see them super clearly, either due to fog, color washing, or hardware limitations. something about how easy they are to see now just takes the majesty away from them, not to mention how the remake seems to be missing certain cinematic choices (e.g. in the remake they almost always have their eyes shining now, instead of the original where the eyes would glow and dim depending on the state of the colossi) also, that motion blur effect on cenobia on the remake looks really dumb

The rain effect in the final colossus answers your question. The graphics are a clear improvement.
For some of the colossi I will grant that the ps3 version had better lighting and atmospheric effects for *some* of the colossi, but certainly not all or even most. The remake had terrain that looked far better and the grass/fur was less jarring to look at, and blended way more seamlessly. In the ps3 and original, it was way less clear that the penultimate colossus is intended to immediately look like a literal gorillla, whereas now it is clearly differentiated in coloration and texture quality from thr other humanoid colossi.

Motor Sportz it makes sense to show the PS3 version since it just has more visual clarity and doesn’t have a slide show frame rate.
The ps3 version is basically similar to what you would get if you played the ps2 version on an emulator.
No entiendo porque hay tanta gente diciendo que la versión de PS2 es insuperable. El juego antes era increíble y lo máximo , y en este remake hicieron lo mismo y hasta mejoraron los detalles y sonidos de cada ambiente , la atmósfera es prácticamente la misma , la sensación de combate y de terror es también la misma. Al parecer nunca están contentos en el trabajo que hacen en los estudios de videojuegos. Cuando lanzaron el RE2 Remake dijeron que era horrible porque lo hicieron totalmente nuevo y con mecánicas nuevas. Y este Shadow of the colossus lo hicieron idéntico pero con mejoras muy significativas y dicen que no es bueno porque es lo mismo y según la nostalgia antes daba más emoción. Entonces que es lo correcto? de mi parte digo que es un excelente trabajo. 👍
I can’t tell which version I like better. The PS4 version looks a lot cleaner and looks much more alive. But the PS3 version feels very reminiscent of twilight princess which is one of my favorite Zelda games, and that just has this feeling of mystery around it. I also feel like the colossi look a lot better in the PS3 version but they look great in the PS4 version two.

The PS3 version is the same as the PS2 version, rendered in an upscaled resolution. Makes sense to compare it like this is this video to show the differences between the remaster version and the original with more clarity of details for the exact comparison.
to think this game is basically just you versus 16 bosses yet.. it is an incredible game
It is insane that this is a PS2 game. It is extraordinarily ahead of it's time.

Can't help but feel that by changing the graphics to look more modern, they lost a great deal from the original artstyle. Was the point of the original look to be 'beautiful'? Or was it more abut conveying a specific atmosphere overall? Sometimes less is more.

I consider the remake as arguably the GOAT video game with my sole criticism being Wander’s facial structure and expression. In the original he had a 1,000 yard stare and was gaunt. He looked like he smoked a pack an hour and hadn’t slept in days and it made me believe that his emotional burden was worse than fighting a 50 ton rock monster. The remake face doesn’t convey that.

Either way; S.O.T.C. is a great game. It's been in my collection for years; where it shall remain.
There was no need of remaking this beautiful master piece. It was completely perfect the way it was. At least they didn't do anything to the soundtrack, which I consider the best OST in the entire history of videogames! What a wonderful geniuses Fumito Ueda and Koh Otani are!

Well, they technically did affect the soundtrack in a way. The original composer remastered all of the tracks
