Its Saturday, September 30th, 2023. I just got home from the Not So Strictly Blue Grass Festival. Never heard of the Tesky Brothers. But damn can he sing and his band was awesome as well. They were so good, that i left the concert after their set because i just didnt think anyone could pull off what they did. This is some of the best music ive heard in recent history and im more of a hip hop and electro head, but this had me thinking of 70s soul like Al Green. Yall incredible! Im glad i randomly found yall at a free concert by my house.

There’s just something so monumental about the Teskey Brothers that makes each new album that they bring out to feel like you’re being seduced by another timeless blend of old-school soul, rock and blues. Their first two albums: Half Mile Harvest (2017), and the Grammy-nominated Run Home Slow (2019), already have, with the Warrandyte raised brothers finding worldwide attention as R&B/Soul heavy hitters. But when it came into writing this record, it was a hugely different process to anything that they’ve done in the past. Creating a kind of record, as they reflected on how far they had come and grappled with their new experiences and responsibilities of raising a family within the Covid dramas of the last few years. One of those fundamental changes came in the actual recording of the album. For the first time since the brothers founded the band in 2008, they didn’t use the ramshackle home studio built by carpenter Sam in the basement of what was once the family home. Clearing out years of vintage analogue gear (including Jimmy Barnes’ old 24-track tape machine) was a bittersweet task to them, but in the end a rewarding one. To further shake things up, Josh and his brother opted to relocate to Sydney to record “The Winding Way” and enlisted the help of producer Eric J Dubowsky, who is better known for his work with dance artists such as The Chemical Brothers, Chet Faker and Flume. It was a deliberate decision to choose someone outside their genre and while they found their ambition and sonic palette broadened by the collaboration, a few non-negotiables remained. Dubowsky’s subtle touch helping The Teskey Brothers to deliver their most stunning, yet adventurous album to date. Fuller in tone and less formulaic in approach, sees them dive head-first into a wealth of rich textures and instruments previously unexplored by the group while maintaining the integrity, power and levity of their first two releases. The theme throughout the record is all about those ‘growing up’ themes of nostalgia, connection, displacement, and finding a path through the winding way of life. Opener ‘I’m Leaving’ is one for the purists, keeping its cards close to its chest with classic Teskey Brother’s sensibilities. Josh’s voice is as powerful as ever, as is Sam’s minute yet deliberate strums. It’ll have you feeling at home immediately. “Oceans Of Emotions” evokes the same feeling, with its motown/gospel harmonics destined to be a favourite amongst longtime fans of the group’s bluegrass roots. Whereas, “London Bridge” changes it up, organically dabbling into the free-flowing tempo changes of electronic music through a myriad of powerful hooks and well-placed breaks. In a similar vein “This Will Be Our Year” maintains impressive tempo changes through meticulous drum fills and cymbal work, while my favourite tune of theirs “Blind Without You” goes in a different direction again, contrasting winding horn arrangements and uplifting folk melodies alongside Josh’s wounded, emotionally driven vocal delivery. Stepping outside the comfort zone of the old studio seems to have made this one a more mature and ‘classy’ release in 2023. With “The Winding Way” finally making it its way into the world, The Teskey Brothers are now back in full (family-friendly) tour mode but stripped back to a two-piece outfit after parting ways with founding members Liam Gough and Brendan Love at the end of last year which gave the boys freedom to write the songs together and then find “find the best people for the job” to bring them life.
