Makoto Misumi was just an average teenager who suddenly was summoned to another world as a "hero." But the goddess of this world called him ugly and took his hero status away from him, then sent him to the ends of the world. He meets dragons, spiders, orcs, dwarves, and many other non-human races in the wastelands. Makoto manages to show promise in the use of magic and fighting, which he wouldn't have been able to do in his former world. He has numerous encounters, but will he be able to survive this new world? A fantasy where a guy who gods and humanity had abandoned tries to reset his life in this new world is about to begin!

I felt like that with Tomoe and Mio. But this? Nah. They want to be third and up so they don’t have to sleep with him or do anything else wives are expected to do, other than spend his money and let their parents and families use his name for their own benefit. They all belong to the streets.
What a phrase
They didn't really go into this in the anime (at least not yet), but all of these women want to be his **third** wife, which basically means they don't want to have the responsibility of producing an heir. I.e. it would be a sexless marriage where the wife gets full access to his finances and the only thing he gets in return is a political alliance with the wife's family (which obviously isn't necessarily a good thing).
@@coltonwilliams4153 Most people who have more than two wives in that type of society only have them to bare a heir. So I think they do expect that.

A confession would be asking to be 1st or 2nd (3rd is pretty much just a political/business arrangement). I don't think Mio would care if it didn't trouble Makoto, because they aren't even trying to compete with her.
Vague spoilers (from the WN) below:
Eventually Makoto says yes to one of them (on the condition that she becomes his 1st wife) and she runs away (and then gets bullied for that).
When Mio finds an actual potential rival, she gets serious, instantly becoming my favorite character for an arc.

In case anyone is wondering Tomoe and Mio already know about this but they ignore it because they know he will reject them all.
Only way he will even consider it is if its an actual love proposal not commercial.
He wasn’t suffering from success, Makoto was suffering from skanks surrounding him for especially shallow reasons.
Not their fault that society has raised them to see marriage as basically nothing more than political, their whole society is built on shallow thinking because of the Goddess (nobility definitely is also connected, but the Goddess is a ridiculously shallow person and teaches the humans of her world to follow suit.)
Exactly! None of them really want to have anything to do with him. They just want an easy ticket to the easy life. Hell, they don't even want to sleep with him! Being third wife or more would mean they don't have the responsibility to procreate.
In a way, you could say that it happened because if his success in his business and power. So maybe it counts?

So thinking about it, it doesn't make sense that Makoto is considered ugly in this world. Yeah he's from earth and is honestly average there, but hus parents are originally from this world.
you kind of open up another issue, that worlds hymans are a cheap weaker version of earth humans that the goddess made. Earth is supposedly a very harsh place so maby because the mother was not fully use to earth, yet, it interfered with what would be a normal hyman pregnancy?

What did you expect, Makoto? The concept of marriage in another world isn't going to be the same as your old world.
@zackiebullock3614a couple things:
1) your comment implies that marriages before the 1800s were about love and were better than today’s marriage. What makes you think that was the case?
2) there are still a decent amount of people who remain married for a long time if not for life. Some are religiously bound to remain in such marriages, others are simply loyal. To say that it doesn’t exist in western societies is abjectly false.
3) the practice of divorce is not a bad thing. If two people tried their hand at a relationship and it didn’t work out, a divorce should be permissible. My own parents fought for years. For weeks on end I and my brothers would wake up every single morning to screaming and fighting. That would happen off and on for years. I never realized how stressed it made me until I left the house.
My parents are finally splitting up but it’s an extremely toxic separation. Neither of my parents trusts the other for a peaceful resolution. Both are expecting the other to stab them in the back.
I’m sure you’re wrong on other parts of your comment too but it’s late and I’d be surprised if you bothered to read this far already.

Funny thing, I don't know if it already happened in the anime, but there is one scene where a girl approaches him who is kinda his type and so he made the joke that he would consider it if she were to become his first wife and she instantly rejected him XD.
In real life, ugly guys can get hot chicks as long as their rich and dependable but in this weak world it's not the same.

You remember that merchant Makoto helped in Tsigi? The one where he lifted a curse from the Merchants entire family? Both of that guys daughters become Makoto's students. They don't see him as a romantic partner, but if Makoto was interested both of them would marry him. They are that grateful for what he did.

Yes, because the Goddess of this world cursed him. So, he is unable to speak the language of the hyumans (in this world it's "hyuman" instead of "human") called "Common". So, this is his only way to communicate with the hyumans. He can speak every other language.
If it wasn't for the form of his hair I would have thought the mom cheated on the dad. Especially since it's Japan 😅

Why does he speak in these Speech Balloons in-Universe?
The goddess granted him the ability to speak all languages *except* hyuman (the humans of that world). He has to learn it the old fashioned way. But he had lots of trouble getting the pronunciation right, so he gave up and started using the speech balloons instead.

Is they expect the people in that marriage to have kids. And when that happens, it would be less likely for things to happen. Since the two people have kids together. But wasn't always a guarantee of nothing happening.
