- "MMMBop" is a song written and performed by the American pop rock band Hanson. It was released in April 1997 as the lead single from their debut full length studio album, Middle of Nowhere (1997). The song was nominated for two Grammys at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards and is the band's most successful single to date. "MMMBop" was a major success worldwide, reaching number one in at least 12 countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The song was voted the best single of the year in The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll, while also topping critics' polls from such media as Rolling Stone, Spin, and VH1, and was ranked No. 20 on VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of the 90s",[1] as well as No. 98 on VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of the Past 25 Years".[2]

2022 in my 30s now and still love this song! The 90s were an amazing time to grow up 😁

They are criminally underrated, great voices, great musicians.
And the fact that they all played the instruments and didn’t need much for backing or other members, they did it all themselves unlike pretty much a majority of all mainstream artists. They should have been way higher and much more appreciated

My partner used to work on the show. We have one of these metal TOTP signs up in our kitchen diner with LED lights in it.
Was it a slow recording process or was it quite quick or were there lots of gaps between acts performing?
@@steveh31 - Hi Steve, he’s out working on another well-known light entertainment programme today, but I’ve just spoken to him on the phone, so I can give you a more well-rounded answer. He says that each programme was recorded in a day, sometimes live, more often not. A 'day' in TV terms is typically pretty long (especially nowadays), in this instance maybe starting about 10am. There were four stages. Each stage would need to be reset between each act, and acts would go through rehearsals, with maybe half an hour each allocated to them. Changes would then be made as needed, lighting, set, camera angles etc. Then the audience would come in and, after an audience warm up, the recordings would take place. If a pre-recorded show, there’d still be a degree of gaps between acts, but I imagine these would have been kept to a minimum, not least because of the live audience. I must say though, it always amazes me how much waiting he seems to do as a member of a TV production crew. All that sitting about, just waiting, would drive me nuts!

I have been playing drums for 14 years and im pretty sure when I saw this when i was 8 that was when I decided I wanted to play drums. So in a strange way this is why I am a musician. Weird. Regardless of the music you gotta admit they were fucking talented.
They were and still are quite talented as adults. Curious why you say "regardless of the music" Do you believe their music is bad ? To me, this is one of those perfect pop songs...quick tempo, upbeat, great chorus & melody. As a pop song, it hits all the marks it's supposed to...and that's what good music does ! So why do you think it's. not good ? Is it because it's tempo & lyrics make it sound like "bubblegum" pop ?

But its okay if this is lip synced, they are still talented in any way and plus I know some singers are also told to lip sync for reasons like saving their voice for a concert or something like that. I remember from the movie Bohemian Rhapsody Queen or Freddie Mercury was forced to lip sync and he didn't like it to be honest but still he has to (I forgot the reason) again its okay if a singer lip syncs since its not their choice anyway but either their manager, voice instructor, etc

Elle Smith Top Of The Pops had a lipsync policy at various stages of the show, Jimmy Somerville was forced to lip sync when performing "Don't Leave Me This Way" and as a protest he and Sarah Jane lip synced to each others vocals at one point, they were taken to see TOTP management afterwards and accused of mocking the show.
+steveh31 Plus Taylor's voice broke after recording Mmmbop so he couldn't sing it in original key.
A lot of television and organizers have rules about forced playback during live performances to ensure top quality. It sounds dumb but it's to avoid slip-ups with instruments, vocal errors, etc.
Michael David to be fair seeing the live performances the voice break did the song more justice to the lyrics rather than being played at kids parties
