I love my Taylor T5z and highly recommend getting Zebra strings which have enough bronze for the acoustic sound AND enough nickel for the magnetic pickup. Otherwise you're getting half of what you could.
Bless... The lads have been hanging around each other so long that they pull each others expressions... Rob @ 7:34 Very intriguing hybrid... I've never heard anything so varied... One for the wall maybe? Try before buy for sure...
I purchased my T5z well after this video was produced (~2017). Yes, it is primarily an electric guitar that does a reasonable impression of a "plugged-in" acoustic. It does take a while to navigate your way through the switching. However, if you do put in the effort, you will be rewarded with one of the finest, all-around guitars available.
My local shop has one of these but it's the Koa top, and it is such an awe inspiring guitar. It is used and still commands a $3000 price tag. The playability is just like nothing else I have ever played. The action, feel and tone make two hours go by without you even being aware of the passage of time. I could not stop playing it. It was like all the things that I struggle with on a regular guitar just fell away with this thing. Single note runs, chords, finger picking, flat picking, bending, vibrato, slide, you name it, it is effortless on this guitar. If I came home with it, I would be divorced, so it would cost more than the sticker. But I would trade every single guitar I own for this, it is THAT good,
It depends on the amount of guitarists. I played both in church bands with one and two guitarists. In the first case, I would really suggest it. If you have more than one i think it would be better to have an electric and an acoustic guitar. But that is just my opinion.
Ah you silly Coheed fans always wet yourselves whenever you hear their music playing. What? My pants are wet too? That just... I... shut up and play more welcome home..
Greetings from Puerto Rico Captain & Chappers Just got a Tobacco Sunburst Pro T5z and it's just PERFECT…! It's on the expensive side but you get what you pay for on Taylors. The sounds you can get on these is just INCREDIBLE. Thanks for the great review...
Thank you, guys, for a thorough overview. I LOVE the gaslamp color model and was looking at the T5z in that tone as a replacement or additional jazz box. However, I see now that these weren't quite meant for that...although they still sound amazing. Guess I may have to get over the color obsession and look at T3s. Again, much appreciated.
Innovation done right, unlike Fender with their wiring chip nonsense or Gibson's Firebird X. Along with the Line6 dream rig, this is what I like to see guitars evolve into.
I can understand that, I assume you mean that the Variax and Firebird X are similar? I just meant that the Line6 products seem a lot better executed than the Firebird X.
I'd love to see a comparison of the T5z and the PRS Hollowbody II. I tried one of the latter yesterday and it felt and sounded wonderful. The Taylor comes from the acoustic side, and the PRS comes from the electric side, but they meet in the middle with these two models.
Hello chaps! Greetings from Copenhagen! Great vid - also: Could you please tell me about that orange telecaster hanging on the wall behind the Captain! What's the make and model? Cheers!
astounding demo, that guitar sounds so good, it really is very good, I never really liked the acoustic simulated sound type guitars like the variax, and such, but this rendition of combining both is stellar, were on to something here lol
@@stephenlennartz3466 I don’t play live so can’t say. I still have it, don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it. The cleans are crisp. It’s very light! I ran it into a fractal & it’s pretty insane. The downside is that it has a bit of a hollow tone so the electric tone never sounds as “thick” as a real electric but it’s so damn fun I don’t notice.
I have the original style T5 Ltd (£1100 from Andertons April 2010). For me neck & frets comfortable, play great, stable tuning & almost perfect intonation. In acoustic setting it isn't a patch on my Taylor 614CE, but is pretty good for an electric-ish guitar. But in a band situation, trying to be heard over the drummer, the acoustic body sensor just howls uncontrollably, I actually use a piece of tape to block me accidentally catching switch position 1. I found bronze (Elixir) strings were complete crap on this, they just don't excite the pick-ups, it needs regular electric strings, I'm using D'Addario XL jazz light. And the two strap buttons - it's not "a choice", it's so that when you put it down it's stable - doesn't fall over. Ingenious. Search for "barrie baker guitar" if you want to hear mine in action, as an electric with a band, as an acoustic on my own.
I know you have covered others in this "Hybrid stylee"...but I would really like to see a three way shoot out (like Tele & Les Paul comparisons), .... Between Taylor T5, The Godin A6 Ultra, and the Crafter SAT as I am wanting to move to a hybrid. Cheers KEEP ROCKIN
I would love one of these ! Being lightweight is a huge advantage to me, the 2 main things I look for now are a nice neck and light, I just wan't something to pick up and play these days.
+Adam Jones You do realise that pickups are not reliant on the material of the string, however there is another reason why nylon strings can't be used on this guitar. Nylon strings do not come with ball ends so it will prove difficult to string the guitar.
So glad you guys done the T5z. I have a T5 and love it but Rob is right you do have to watch the gain anything much more than cranked Marshall gets to hard to handle. It is an innovative guitar so you have to approach it a bit differently. Thanks for the videos and hello from America.
Does it make sense to spend that much money on a T5z? It's versatile and probably very inspiring (as their baritone 8) but if you ever change your mind and try to sell it, you're screwed... I mean you always lose money when you sell a guitar you bought brand new but in Europe, T5 lose like half their value the minute you walk out the door of the music store. I wonder what their classic version sounds like...
One of the great things about Taylor Guitars, is they will make any of their normal production guitars in a left handed version. Takes about 60 days though. Mine will be delivered in a couple weeks! 😁 My first electric guitar, other than my lap steel. Can't wait.
And you guy didn't even really play around with the bass and treble controls. You can get a Gretsch kind of sound, and Strat kind of sound, as well as the Gibson 335 sound, depending on where you have the settings.
I had a Taylor T5. I loved the sound, but the radius on the neck felt like the neck was flat and I didn’t like that, so I sold it. Does the neck feel more comfortable on the T5z? Also, when you use the full “expression” mode, do you get some ability to play percussive guitar like one can on a regular acoustic?
Thumbs up if you like the idea, but I think you guys should do a rig setup and the theme is if the rig was your only rig you could use for the rest of your life, what would you chose? Like 1 guitar, 1 amp, 1 pedal etc.
Nobody seems to have mentioned the looks. Personally I think these look gorgeous. As someone who owns mostly cheap guitars, if I was spending this kind of money for the first time it wouldn't be my first choice. I've always wanted a Les Paul (though I'd possibly go for a Tokai given their excellent reputation), Strat or even a Tele (I didn't like them in the past but they've been growing on me over the past couple of years) so I'd probably go for one of those first and second. Bit of an aside, I don't know how many people agree, but the different lines from Fender and Gibson are getting confusing to follow.
Let me put it this way. The T5Z is unique in that it has three (3) kinds of pickups AND separate treble, bass and volume controls AND a 5 way selector switch. There are NO electric guitars from Fender, Gibson, PRS, Ibanez, etc that offers this level of control and flexibility except for custom shop. Long story short, its 2018 and I wants one!!! Blue as well to pair with my blue PRS single cut hollow body II that ONLY has piezo and two humbuckers and treble controls. Look guys, its says T5Z Pro. For a Pro, it is well worth the money.
the guitar seems like it does so much that it becomes too much, Rob how would you simplify this guitar ? or maybe i should ask, Rob if it was your design project for the T5z2, where would you take it ? greetings from san antonio
I have a T5 and I use electrics and its perfect. I play acoustic shows all over town with my T5 with Ernie Ball Cobalt 11's. I can play solos on it like I would on my Les Pauls. It's a great guitar and I can plug into an amp and rock this thing up if I want.
I don't play at huge volumes but I'm worried that i won't be able to control the feedback at a show.. What kind of volumes were you playing at in the demo?
I love my Taylor T5z and highly recommend getting Zebra strings which have enough bronze for the acoustic sound AND enough nickel for the magnetic pickup. Otherwise you're getting half of what you could.
What tell me more?!
Absolutely love longer more chilled out videos like this, cheers guys :)
I'm so glad you two did a review on this guitar. I really wanted to buy one, and now I think I will! Thank you!!

The ultimate church band guitar? :P
Lol, that's just what I was thinking!

Joe Scott People with their eyes closed.

14:12 Coheed and Cambria - Welcome home! Man chappers, you always throw in good riffs.
Bea really is good, geez!
Yeah he totally steals the video even if he just plays a minute!
love how it sounds, love how it looks, love its concept, hate that i can't afford it :/
Love the Coheed at 14:14 Not heard that in forever.
Loving the dual cam with the close ups of the guitars!!!
Coheed and Cambria are my favorite band! Super cool to hear rob playing that
Ah you silly Coheed fans always wet yourselves whenever you hear their music playing. What? My pants are wet too? That just... I... shut up and play more welcome home..
No but seriously, they're the reason I started playing. Met them all before and going to see Claudio today for a book signing. I'm excited af.
Right on! I got to meet the whole current band at Uproar festival which was awesome!

I absolutely loved the Coheed Intro.
Welcome Home Rob!
The blue flame top. I wants it.
Thanks for sharing guys, I could watch you all day
I love these videos. They are great to put on whilst cooking the dinner and they beat the crap on the telly.
YES! Haven't heard to play 'Majesty' in ages Rob! Made me smile!
Isn't what Rabea's playing Midnight Express by Extreme?
Thank you, guys, for a thorough overview. I LOVE the gaslamp color model and was looking at the T5z in that tone as a replacement or additional jazz box. That’s awesome controlled feedback
Bea's playing always amazes me, always something new. Good work mate!

I was going to like your comment, but then you completely contradicted yourself with your approval of the Line6 Dream Rig.
I can understand that, I assume you mean that the Variax and Firebird X are similar? I just meant that the Line6 products seem a lot better executed than the Firebird X.
Lennart N
They are better executed, but I am against the concept itself (with which the first part of your comment seemed to agree).

YES!!! BACK TO THE LONG VIDEOS ARE WE CHAPS JUST THE WAY IT USED TO BE :D
I'd love to see a comparison of the T5z and the PRS Hollowbody II. I tried one of the latter yesterday and it felt and sounded wonderful. The Taylor comes from the acoustic side, and the PRS comes from the electric side, but they meet in the middle with these two models.
Midnight Express - Nuno Bettencourt wow!
I have to say i wasn't expecting such a awesome sounding instrument. This one is going on my wishlist for sure :3
Wow, that feedback stuff at the very end were so dynamic I coulda sworn you were using a wah.

I'm aware of getting one of those. But your so entertaining and I love to listen to your ideas on guitars I've never heard of before :)
love that lil bit of coheed rob plays around 14 minutes!
Taylor T5z Guitar Range Review - Time to challenge those preconceptions!
What is he's playing? 9:06 approx
Wow. Would love to see a demo on these guitars true the Two Rock Sensor. That must be magic!
Getting mine on Monday!!! Cant wait! Great review guys, this is such a great guitar!
Did you get it? Do you love it? How is it for live performance? Thx

Best guitar demo I've ever seen on youtube hahaha
Love the new intro!
That orange one in the back! PLEASE Chappers! Tell me about it!
That Coheed and Cambria riff sounded nailed.
You should also demo their full on Electric guitars!
I own one. I reccomend them! But they're very uncommon because they never got promoted much and not many professional players use one.
the best word i found for this instrument is inspiring..very inspiring indeed
just tested one out today after months searching for one...and yeah, its pretty good..

you know what i really want to see is rob and cap playing fan fret guitars
Yeah i picked up the custom and instantly fell in love and found my soul mate

thank you for doing a T5Z review with distortion.
Hi guys. Thanks for the video. One question, would it be possible to use nylon strings on this guitar?
not if you want to use the pickup. otherwise u can't use brass or nylon, unless you get nylon or brass with ferrous coating.
+Adam Jones You do realise that pickups are not reliant on the material of the string, however there is another reason why nylon strings can't be used on this guitar. Nylon strings do not come with ball ends so it will prove difficult to string the guitar.

any phase issues from running the 2 amps (electric and acoustic) together?
Chappers, what is that country/folky finger picking riff you always play? The one at 16:57

It's Welcome Home from the movie 9!
9 - Welcome Home / Coheed and Cambria
Have you guys ever done a video on the Gibson Alex Lifeson models? The LP with Piezo + Floyd Rose in particular?
Is it just me or does that ml-7 in the back have green and red frets?
No its not you i noticed the multi-colour fret issue on the Schecter video as well.
Must be some sort of weird light refraction... Defo not multi coloured frets!
CaptAnderton maybe you should do a rainbow fret guitar... gimmicky but i bet you'd rake the money in :P
Wow definitely will have to try one of them. T5 looks so much better without them white outlines.
Love that orange tele!
Chappers, thats a nice T shirt!! Where did you buy it??
What's that orange tele thing on the back wall? It looks cool
Taylor doesn't made a single bad product. Everything I've played from them is top notch... And my 410ce is to die for!
these guitars are amazing and i can see how clever and great they may be for someone, just that person isn't me
If the T5 is still available, a demo would be appreciated for a comparison.

Anyone know what that is that bea first plays on the guitar? Its beautiful.
Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) - Midnight Express
qwoeiu Haha should've known it was Nuno if Beach was playing it
Would love to see you compare this to the standard T5, its hard to tell a difference not seeing them both at once
isn't that Allan key hole on the neck joint so you can adjust the action? I think it actually raises the neck up and down, like the Babicz system.
How do these compare, say, to some of the Godin hybrids? Have you considered reviewing any Godin guitars?
Songs played at 9:06 please?
Just picked this baby up in mahogany, super happy with it, money well spent.
Mine is being delivered today :-)
that intro is beast :)
Damn, I kinda want that feedback in my life.
Ronald Garcia Guitar Fernandez ST-1 or sustainiac system. Under $200 and you’ll get sustain/ feedback forever.
