      They give the expanded rules option to allow it in. That said if the DM says no there is the crafter feat. Three tool proficiencies and a 30% cost reduction on mundane items.
      This can make for some fun, especially since I would think that anything mundane you could craft you can also fabricate with the spell

    In one of the books I think it was xanathars had a table for magic item rarity to Monster CR. So for instance if you wanted to make armor of fire resistance you would need to slay a monster of a certain CR that had fire resistance. They completely miss the opportunity to refine those rules

    I kinda want to set up multiple tables you can roll on for magic materials. Like, sure, 75% in the market for the materials to craft a bag of holding, right? But if a character is related to a thieves guild they can try the black market, or if a character was/is a merchant, they can try their supplier connections for another roll. Heck, if there's a character who is or is associated with a noble, they can try to roll there. You could even make different conditions apply depending on the source for materials, like the black market connections could be cheaper but carry heat from them being stolen or illegal, or the noble connection could have a 90% chance of the materials being available, but would be more expensive

  • @brianc4013

    Another interesting tidbit, is that the range of values for magic items is now always near the maximum of what it was before. A very rare item used to cost between 5,000-50,000, now it always costs 40,000. A rare item was 501-5000gp, it is always 4,000gp now. I forgot that their listed crafting prices were always the absolute maximum value for that magic item, so they could in theory be purchased for significantly cheaper than crafting them yourselves in the old handbook, but that's now fixed.

    I recently came across a video by Dungeons & Drams that uses Chatgpt to craft magic items from Monsters. The prompt you feed it can be tailored by the specific monster and per character; for example a dagger for a level 5 Rouge from a Blue Dragon and it will list basically everything you as a Player and DM need to know in order to craft said Item. Check them out if you want a easy way to Monster Hunter D&D! Great Video BTW

    In terms of videos per day: As a fan of you, I say go for as many as you want. As a person who can't always watch everything, 2-3 videos a day is about as muach as I'd think one can watch. I know that if I see someone post 5 20-30 minute videos a day, I'd get a bit overwhelmed and anxious on if I could get caught up. That being said, if its 1 longer video along with several shorter videos or shorts, I'd think that'd be much easier and consumer friendly to digest. Ultimately, its up to you, these are just my thoughts

      Yeah "a GP worth of fitting Raw Material as treasure" is a really good way to make something with magic items. At the end of the day it's flavored treasure but you get to give out more of it if you make it specific to a type of magic item, using the player's ideas for inspiration, and make selling it inefficient. The three Dragonshards in Eberron are already a great way of setting some rules for specific raw materials.

  • @brianc4013
    @brianc4013 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    I do think having crafting costs described this way makes the crafter feat much more attractive. It's still "only" a 20% discount, but at especially rare+ the amount of money you save on materials is enough to make a magic item of the tier below it. The minimal crafting time becomes much more of a factor at that point, but if you are in the style of game where you have a lot of down time making magic items becomes more reasonable. I can't tell from the video if a helper needs to meet all of the requirements for a magic item. It does just say someone can help but I'd say its reasonable a skilled hireling in arcana (wizard apprentice or something) or in an applicable crafting skill (blacksmith for magic armor) could reasonably help. Consider a rare item, you save 400 gold on materials, and a skilled hireling is 2gp/day. You just halved the craft time, and still have leftover money. If your DM says its reasonable you could have more than one (I think of something like a cauldron of plenty, where more than one hireling would be reasonable) you can decrease that time to craft by 3 and still have extra leftover money that you saved. Conveniently at 2gp/day listed in PHB24 the time to craft is equal to the cost to have someone halve the craft time in gp.

    I added a easy way for salvage. Survival with a dc of 10+CR (fail ruins the corps). you then ear based off the CR 4 or less is CR in gold (max 4), 5-9 is 10xCR (max 90), 10-14 is 100xCR (1,400max), 15-19 is 1,000xCR (19,000 max)and 20+ is 10,000xCR. This does not mean it is good for all crafting like killing cat will not help for crafting a nonmagical sworld. Some monster may be worth more or less in the world (dragon are normal more).

    I don't mind multiple videos at once. As for crafting, I don't think the "crafters" at WotC have a solid grasp on time. Keep in mind, none of what I am about to say is a reflection on you at all. The length of time required to craft some of these items in the real world under the same conditions used during what is considered the medieval era is a fraction of what is suggested. If it really took most of a year to craft plate armor, most smiths would go out of buisness. Some of the fanciest most high end armor took between 6 - 9 months and a majority of that time was spent on fine detail work such as filigree and ornate design. When a smith was hired to make such a masterpiece, it was usually for a king or nobleman and they were hansomely compensated for it. This offset all of the standard buisness they would have otherwise completed. Hence the ridiculous cost normally affiliated with such a piece of work. I have always operated under a sliding scale for creation of items, magic or otherwise, based on the complexity of the world the players are in. Saying that the cost of creation in a low magic/low tech world is the same as a high magic/high tech one is just foolish. I realize the old system with a massive variable was not the solution either, but hundreds of days to make a dagger just because it has a magical property added to it is madness.

    Crafting time is the worst. I want to go out, farm the monsters and collect the raw materials, maybe saving up over multiple quests and adventures, and then when I have a few weeks of down time craft that item I've had my eye on. A year or more of down time is crazy.

  • @theodorehunter4765
    @theodorehunter4765 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    I'd probably change the 10gp per day to 5gp x Proficiency bonus per day. Speeds up crafting at higher levels.
    I'd probably also allow characters to work together to meet requirements. A Fighter with Smithing Tools could assist a Wizard with crafting a magic sword, even if the Fighter doesn't now the spell and the Wizard doesn't have smithing tool proficiency.
    Also, interesting note: In official DnD lore, weeks are ten days, which explains why a weeks worth of work is 10x the amount.
    Finally, a question: Do magic items have the spells required for crafting listed?

  • @timjensen4320
    @timjensen4320 22 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

    Question: do people look at the crafting requirements in days or hours? I see a lot of people assuming you can work 16 hour days to count as 2 days of work. Real work doesn't work that way, at least not long term. I just see people making assumptions about micro managing hours of their day assuming they can dedicate 16-20 hours each day during their downtime to craft and knock things out.

      I think it depends on the intended feel of your campaign.
      Some people run things more realistically, with characters that get tired, have to take bathroom breaks, and are actually in limping pain at 1hp.
      Others have characters basically ignore human(-oid) failings unless the rules say they apply.

  • @DSpiritwolf

    • @DeadmanwalkingXI
      @DeadmanwalkingXI 15 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      It's not bad, IMO. The discount from Crafter is meh, but if you want to be able to craft whatever, then 4 Artisan Tools Proficiencies gets you most stuff (Woodcarver's Tools, Tinkerer's Tools, Smith's Tools, and Jeweler's Tools all added together let you craft almost any magic item you like). It doesn't come with Arcana so it only works if you have that already from something else, but if you wanted to craft whatever, then you're good to go.
      If the DM is generous, the Crafter discount might also apply to the materials to craft magic items, and that would make it quite a bit better.

    As usual with WOTC I'm 50/50.
    On the good side, I appreciate the expanded rules for crafting. Though will probably still use Hammund's Guide to Harvesting for "monster bits"
    On the other hand that rule that you must be able to cast the spell the magic item grants - **I am straight up going to ignore** because that is risible nonsense.
    Rogue. Ooh a ring of invisibility!
    Oh wait, I'm a thief. Nevermind *toss*
    Or as happened in our Curse of Strahd game my Celestial Warlock picked up a staff that could cast Cone of Cold, but Cone of Cold isn't a Warlock spell so I guess that wouldn't have worked unless I gave it to the sorceror.
    I think that misses the whole point of some magic items that they let you do things you otherwise cannot.

    • @cezarsiqueira54
      @cezarsiqueira54 7 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I could be wrong, but the spell requirement is to create a magic item, not to use it.
      A rogue can use a ring of invisibility. They can't craft it unless they have a casting feature that allows them to cast the invisibility spell.
      Your celestial warlock can cast a cone of cold from the staff. If you want to create a rod that allows cone to cone casting, you need to prepare it for crafting.

      Depends on the campaign. I have played in games where the party is running from dungeon to dungeon slaying monsters. I have also played in games where we sit around in a city for a month waiting for work.
      If you let your DM know ahead of time that crafting is something you want to do, they can generally slow the pace of the game down enough to allow time for it.
      Also, with Bastions, you can have your hirelings craft stuff for you while you adventure.
      Finally, a spyglass is NOT trivial to make. It requires at least two perfectly shaped and polished lenses set at the perfect distance from each other in a (usually collapsible) tube.

    I hate the time duration that Crafting in PHBs takes... the campaigns I play (have played) never go on for months etc...they are usually tighter timelines. I much prefer how the Dungeon Dudes with Dungeons of Drakkenheim are creating their crafting: You have to collect components through adventuring (not grinding mats) and once you have the necessary components - craft it right away ... boom, done. They have added difficulty levels by needing more rare forges or magic academies to craft higher rarity items - totally fair and cool. But I love that it's just "if you have the stuff, make it then and there." Hundreds of days to craft Plate Armour = What's the point ?!? 1) my campaign will never last that long 2) why not just buy it outright because looting 1500GP will take far less than 150 days of adventuring.
    I want crafting to be an activity that I can do to forego either gold costs or, much more importantly, time. otherwise.. f it - i'll just buy it.

    Ted, did they change the rules in the DMG24? I am pretty sure that a spell scroll says that it uses an action to cast from. So any spell with a casting time of Reaction would make very poor spell scrolls unless you intend to ready the casting, which really isn't that good either.

    • @GodwinXZ
      @GodwinXZ 19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      No it says it uses the casting time in the spell in the 2024 PHB page 228. However you need to be able to read it. So the scroll would have to be in hand, as you can’t draw it with the reaction.

    With all the discussions about crafting. They left a big void between the difference of NPC shops and shops the players own.
    Crafting things yourself (player), will be better because it's always around half the cost and time. Because almost everything you create is based on tool efficiency and proficiency.
    NPC associates for player shops should be based on players proficiency. That way when you assign jobs to work on. You can get a cut of time chipped off per associate assigned to that job.
    Another weird thing is that the NPC shops don't have a skill rating assigned to them.
    Also everyone will hunting for expert NPC artificers or specified craftsmen.

    There is a small oversight in the scribe spell scroll section that I'm sure is not RAI. Technically, you can't craft cantrip spell scrolls because you need to have the spell prepared and cantrips are not prepared.

    I definitely don't like that it takes so long to make nonmagical items. At best, it should only take you as the amount of days as the half cost, not the full cost. A spyglass shouldn't take 100 days or 50 with help. It should be closer to 50 and 25 with help. Maybe someone has smith's tools for the device itself and another does the glass blowing for the lenses. Unless you're going getting a year of downtime, you're always just going to buy it. Magic items, however, definitely better to craft. I'm shocked that it seems WotC got rid of the need for magic item recipes. Which, I might just add back to reduce the time needed to craft.
    As for video releases, I prefer daily uploads. I get so many videos that I end up missing a bunch.
    Regarding Tales of the Valiant, I'd love to know about that book's crafting and bastions. From what I've been seeing online, Kobold Press is blowing WotC out of the water for those.

    That seems to me that you'd start seeing people hunting the same creatures over and over across campaigns even for specific Critters. *Everyone* is going to be chasing down Behir for those Wands of Lightning Bolts.

  • @saraphys5555
    @saraphys5555 19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    10:00 See, here's my thing about these crafting rules so far...
    They Suck!
    I don't know why they didnt bring back the 3.5 crafting rules, they are perfectly fair and functional!
    Making a scroll takes 1 day for 0-4th level spells, 2 days for 5-6th level spells, 3 days for 7-8th level spells, and 4 days for a 9th level spell... because crafting is done by 1,000 Gold per Day. This also makes Mundane and Magical crafting line up with the kind of crafting time we *would* see in a fantasy world...
    In the real world, a Medieval Armoursmith would take between 3 weeks and 3 months to make a suit of armour...depending on the period and resources... If we consider a just pre-Renaissance Armoursmith working in a stocked workshop on a single order? ...3-5 weeks.
    ...this is why its absolutely stupid what they're doing with 5.5...
    *sigh*
    And don't even get me started on the fact that there's no Artificer! They put their precious "Warlock" in as a core class, once again, but they abandoned the Artificer, which has been part of D&D *LONGER* then the stupid Warlock!
    ...this is why I hoist a Black Flag, instead of sailing the WotC seas...atleast KP know the Artificer should be a core class! And they know that they should be a master of magic items!
