The elaborating on the distinctions/similarities between the sections and their schematics and how the trouble shooter can zero in on problem was beauty.
Your videos are very helpful -- you have given me a very good grounding in tube terminology ...have a Fisher 400 which I will be re-capping ....so nice to know this can be done by mere mortals !
Rich Phelan I am sooo glad you repaired this Fisher 400.. I happen to have a Fisher 400 as well. I've moved it 4 times in the last 15 years and at the moment it is sitting on the garage floor next to my wifes right front wheel of her car. She hit it at least once and biased the front panel a bit but it still plays (although the 7868's glow a bit too red to my taste) I have recently retired from a pro sound business where I was the shop tech and I also reconed JBL and EV and Altec speakers. I have been wanting to get into this 400 and recap it and revive it.... I am waiting patiently to see your Fisher 400 rebuild . Thanks much for your service wisdom and if you need any speaker tech help you can call on me
Dropping solder on legs and carpet does not compare to inhaling lead fumes all day. Charcoal mask and plenty of ventilation is what literature advises. We love you and want you to keep well!
I know this sounds terrible and I recommend using filters but I got my first soldering iron when I was 8 years old and I'm 76 now. I do try to use a vacuum filter when I can but most of my soldering was without one for most of my life. I'm in perfect health. You don't "inhale lead fumes" the smoke you see is the flux.
Nice video as always! Thanks! I´m having a nice German K&H Amp on my bench on which the phono stage is not very desirable sounding. So that´s why I am looking for nice phono preamp circuits which brought me here. May I ask you for a tip as far as good vintage phono stages are concerned? My plan is to substitute the original phono stage with another one. Thanks in advance, Mike.
Nice Video, you really take your time with good explanation. Did you find out if the life of the 12ax7's were prematurely shortened by something else? Thanks From Bill in Ca.
what is the music at 12:34 please? what if you include full credits for the author and write you dont own rights and the usual things like for fair use policy? people get away with posting whole songs often so there must be a way to do it right....
What did we learn at Blueglow today? 1. If your Fisher 400 sounds a bit off, it could be because it was involved in a CAR WRECK!!! (serious bad@$$!, thug-life equipment!) 2. Don't solder in your underwear! (unless you're as tough as a Fisher 400) 3. Sovtek 12AX7's belong in your 400 because Putin is almost as bad@$$ as an old Fisher I own one of these, they do sound remarkable when prime. Need to give it some attention later, after my 2385 is done.
I'm not sure but ,if anyone else is searching for how to repair a computer system try Saankramer Electronic Magazine System (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my cousin got amazing success with it.

These are indeed fantastic receivers. Thanks for sharing. hope you find time soon to restore your own.:-)
Dave Gilesspie @ AK gives a real good breakdown of the 400 and the design issues in that series and how to make these units really sing!
I might be getting one tomorrow. Cant wait to hear it.
Where are you located? I have a fisher 400, and would like to evaluate if I’m able to send it to you for service/restoration.

Great video. Thanks for sharing all your experience and knowledge. Curious to the artist sample towards the end? Thanks

that's Marilyn Manson's latest LP
C33, C34 (input to voltage amplifier) are 1,000pF ceramic disc capacitors -- you might wish to replace with 1nF polypropylene.
How would this work with some ditton 15's?
