    Your Cantonese is actually so fluent and in a very good pronunciation, but what's funny is that it influents your Mandarin in Hongkonger accent...

    Do you notice when you speak Cantonese, your voice becomes much softer than other languages? Why is that? You make Cantonese sound gentle and tender.
    I hope you'll keep on practising Cantonese, especially when you've learnt Mandarin. As a Cantonese speaker, I do fear that Mandarin will be getting more powerful and Cantonese may one day become ...

    • @AlexHarris1094
      @AlexHarris1094  8 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      MrTsiqsin Yeah I just noticed that too, no idea why... And I totally agree, I'd be absolutely devestated if Cantonese disappeared, that's why I found the taxi driver story in the film 10 Years so touching

    • @JolinaJolie
      @JolinaJolie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      MrTsiqsin One time I read that everyone has kind of a different personality in each and every language. Maybe Alex is a gentle cantonese speaker then. :D

    • @Devilishlybenevolent
      @Devilishlybenevolent 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MrTsiqsin British Chinese here, when I speak Cantonese my voice is a lot deeper. When I speak British English my voice is normal, but when I speak American English it becomes high pitched lol. I live in California long enough to know how to speak in the local accent to blend in if I don't want to get annoyed by the "oh wow you have an accent" conversations.
      I find it fascinating how our voices sound so different in different accents/languages.

    I quite enjoyed this. In the order of ability I'm a native Cantonese and fluent English speaker, being able to understand and speak a bit of Mandarin and a week ago started learning German! In response to an earlier sentiment about how you feel annoyed that you couldn't speak more than one language at that time - I think it depends on the environment you are in, and you learn way more in a foreign environment (UK school system didn't help, as I was taught French). Of course I wish that one day my German can be as good as yours! Keep it up!

    I just met you in underground today in London, and I was impressed deeply by your 廣東話People who speak differently languages are cool, awesome and charming! I think the same and you inspired me. Cheers! Hong Kong is always welcoming you to be back. But if you wanna stay long, I have to tell you it's so difficult to find a proper place to live here. Price of flats are fuxking high.I think you should listen some Cantonese songs to improve your speaking as well. You will be amazed by how a good Cantonese song that every words with 9 tones fits every note. Start with some slow songs. Listen songs from 張學友.

    :0 ur canto is on pointttt
    anyway for writing 中文字, i feel like the actual writing part is fine, just remember the 上至下/左至右 rule and youll get the hang of it pretty quickly cuz there is a limited number of 筆劃。the hardest part is recalling it (so what im saying is, no matter how complex the word looks, if ur just copying it it shouldnt be too hard to write as long as u rmbr the rules of the 筆劃. the hard part is to be able to recall what it looks like in detail so that ur able to write it out without looking at it - but dw too much abt it cuz most ppl(im talkin abt native speakers), especially after high school, sometimes they forget how to write even some of the simplest words, again they r able to recognize it/read it but they arent able to recall it in detail)
    oh and btw i just moved to london from hk cuz of yknow, politics ✨✨✨
    im sorry but this place kinda sucks (mainly just cuz ive been spoiled rotten by the mtr and the hk public transport system in general 😭)
    honestly london doesnt even feel like a city if u ask me (maybe except for central london but anything beyond zone 2 is like 鄉下地方) the biggest ive learned coming here is that i literally cant live ohtside of a city bduejxbdjd

    Wow! That is so impressive! You definitely speak Mandarin and Cantonese better than me! Both my parents are from Guangzhou but I was born in Sydney, so I guess I lost the majority of my Chinese-speaking ability growing up haha. You're right when you say that Cantonese helps with Mandarin! Sometimes when I want to speak a Mandarin sentence, I just 'convert' the Cantonese words to their respective Mandarin sounds in my head haha. But yeah, awesome video! Your language skills are extremely amazing :)

    Heh. Your Mandarin has a bit of a Cantonese accent. Good progress so far, grammar is on point. Keep it going!
    The hardest part may just be the tonal part of the language. Some of your words are on the right track, while others have a much more noticeable error. You seem to have a bit more trouble with the 3rd and 4th tone. Work on streamlining the down-up motion of the words (3rd tone) along with having a bit more confidence on the down motion of the 4th tone.
    Well done!

    I am also learning Mandarin Chinese (simplified and traditional) and I find it very hard to remember pinyin and pronounce Chinese correctly. But since I am good at Japanese I already know about 2000 Chinese chacters only using my Japanese knowledge. I think writing and reading (not loud) is the easiest part. I can usually write Chinese characters by pen but cant read them since I am stuck in the Japanese readings.

    I love how much more gentle, soft spoken and high pitched you are when you speak Cantonese compared to the other languages haha😂 It seems to be a common occurrence when speaking Cantonese for a lot of people👀

    Hi You video is really inspiring! Seeing you speaking each language so fluent , kinda make me want to pick up my German again. I am also a language lover. Can speak the same 4 language like you do but I found it’s really hard to master a language. How can you be so persistent

    Canton might be a good choice. Can both speak Cantonese and Mandarin. And It's an International city also has its own long history and culture. What's more, the food there is the best!!!. That's some of my recommend. You're really encouraged. 加油!

    Hi Alex, Chinese and German are both difficult to learn and you seem to master them quite well at such short time. Like you, I speak the same 4 languages so I know how hard it is to get to that level. Your Cantonese is definitely the best out of the 3 learned languages. Your German grammar is good, but it needs more conversational practice to improve on the accent. My advice is to force yourself to speak only German with your mom (hopefully she doesn't mind). Cantonese intonation is difficult to master and you are getting it mostly correct. So whatever you are doing, you're on the right path. My advice is to start working on writing sooner (as it takes time & effort to practice), and it's unavoidable if you're serious about it. For learning & practising Mandarin & Cantonese together, I'd say the best place would be either Canton or Shenzhen, but you probably know that already. . Good luck to your endeavours and keep up with the video postings.👍

    listening to Chinese songs and tvb dramas helps in learning Chinese. I know I did that. dispite having a Chinese family background, everyone talks English so my mandarin and Cantonese was poor. The songs and dramas helped, I'm sure it'll be able to help you too. 加油!

    Ich lerne auch Deutsch aber ich finde es ist zu lang und schwierig zu lernen.
    Meine Muttersprache ist Kantonesisch, und ich denke deine Kantonesisch ist sehr fließend. Dass glaube ich mehr Deutsch lernen müssen. 😂

    Go to Shenzhen 深圳 or any of the cities in Guangdong such as Guangzhou 廣州 or Foshan 佛山 so you can use your Cantonese and improve your Mandarin at the same time.
