Based my drumming style on both those guys growing up, love how you can recognize them playing on many songs. (let me love you) George Benson a classic Jeff groove :)

I’d love to ask Steve Gadd where he got the left foot upbeats shuffle idea. Al Jackson Jr does that on Booker T and the MGs, “Terrible Thing.”

I actually was thinking about this recently, i wondered about that left foot shuffle thing and the snare and floor tom back beat groove. He either puts the backbeat on the floor tom or does the back beat on both the snare and floor tom. I thought he got that from motown drummers or also have heard Russ Kunkle doing that before Gadd.

@@VivaMcCrilly Yeah, I think a lot of Motown records had two drummers, but they didn’t play the same thing. They’d each play “incomplete” groove patterns that would be awkward to play by one person. Or else, they’d be relatively normal patterns that just feel different when played by two people. That let them orchestrate different ways, such as floor tom backbeats, maybe while the other player was on a snare drum. Of course, Ringo used tom and/or floor tom rides, too. Which isn’t so strange when we remember Sing Sing Sing - a whole groove played on a floor tom. I heard a lot of the tom/snare double backbeat in Don Henley’s parts with the Eagles, too. And of course, Gadd’s playing with Chuck Mangione and Stuff.

    My fav grooves these ones.
    Steely Dan.
    Ghosties are key.
I think Black Friday was the exception though.

I think he might have meant “hate” as in “it’s hard to do well.” He also admitted that the one-handed 16th notes in “I Keep Forgettin’” we’re almost a disaster. He actually dropped a stick during the take that made the record.

@@darrynfarrugia9904 He was quoted saying, “my time sucks.” Go figure. No matter how well you play, you can always hear your own faults. All the more so as you get better, because you’re better at hearing them!

Hi Darryn, I was very fortunate to see Toto in 1988 or 1989 on their "Seventh One" Tour. They were playing in an outdoor Amphitheater. I also was able to meet Jeff Porcaro off to the side of the stage. My buddy and I asked security if we could speak to Jeff. Minutes later, both Jeff and Steve Lukather came out.
At that time, among many others, Jeff Porcaro was a huge influence on my drumming. I told Jeff and he was very down to earth about it.
      He was very respectful.
I told him that I had seen Vinnie Colaiuta give a drum clinic just the week before and his reaction was priceless. They were good friends.
I met Steve Gadd once at a Master Class he gave about 3 years ago in Montreal.
It was at a Drum Camp which meant that we could hang out as well. Another great guy.
